The Galveston College Continuing Education department reaches out to the community by offering professional development and career training programs, customized training programs for business, industry and government, and lifelong learning opportunities for personal growth and enrichment.

The Continuing Education department also offers a robust schedule of online courses and programs through ed2go that prepare students for in-demand occupations and nationally recognized certifications.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES

Please register at least one week prior to class start date. Tuition and fees must be paid upon registration. Students must complete registration five business days prior to a course starting. Students can register online at www.enrole.com/gc/jsp with a valid MasterCard, Visa, Discover Card, or American Express.

Senior Discounts: Classes listed with an “*” are eligible for a 50% senior discount for those over the age of 65 and who live in-district. This discount is applied upon registration.

Class Cancellations, Room Changes, and Rescheduling: Courses with low enrollment prior to a start date are canceled prior to the start date. Students will be notified by phone or email when a class they are enrolled in has been canceled; however, we are sometimes unable to reach everyone. A refund of 100% is automatically processed upon cancellation of classes. To help avoid cancellations PLEASE REGISTER AT LEAST A WEEK PRIOR TO THE START DATE, and encourage your friends to register with you. Occasionally, canceled courses are rescheduled for a later start date, and you will be notified by phone when the opportunity presents itself. In the event of a class room change notice of the room change will be posted on the Continuing Education doors and the classroom that was originally listed.

Refunds: Refunds prior to the start of class will be 100%. Refund requests should be made in person or by phone to 409-944-1344. Refund requests must be received during normal business hours and at least one business day prior to the start date of the class. When a class is canceled you will automatically be refunded the full course amount. There are NO REFUNDS GIVEN AFTER A COURSE HAS BEGUN. There are NO REFUNDS for ED2GO.

Parking: All students must have a valid GC parking sticker. Please pick up in the Media Center Rm: R-120). Visitors to campus must park in the visitors parking lot at the corner of Avenue Q and 39th St. Unpermitted cars parked in the Moody lot will be towed.

Student ID Cards-Visitors: Enrolled students are required to posses a valid student ID card. These may be obtained in the Media Center (Rm: R-120) once you have your payment receipt. Visitors to campus and those who are only here for a short contract training class must display a visitor name tag on their person. These are available in the CE offices, or from your instructor.

Record of Completion And CEUs: Nationally recognized CEUs may be awarded on certain approved occupation-related courses. One CEU is awarded for every 10 contact hours. All courses will be given a Certificate of Completion. It is up to the individual student to see if these courses are eligible for CEUs.

Certified Nurse Aide

& Instructions:

Train to become a Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) in a long-term care facility. Course topics include residents’ rights, communication, safety observation, reporting and basic comfort and care. Students who successfully complete this program earn a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award, and start on the pathway to earn a level one certification as a Patient Care Tech. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor and may need to be simulated due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Students must complete our healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling. Students must wear burgundy scrubs with student patches and have a watch with a second hand. The student is responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. Students are responsible for certification testing with Prometric and paying testing fees online. This is separate from tuition; the instructor will schedule testing dates for the class. The program is eligible for TPEG and a payment plan.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Get started as an entry-level phlebotomist and prepare for your certification exam with the National Healthcare Association (NHA). Study the skills used in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods. Students who successfully complete this program earn a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award, and start on the pathway to earn a Level One certification as a Patient Care Tech. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor and may need to be simulated due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Students must complete our healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling. Students must wear burgundy scrubs with student patches and a white lab coat to clinical sites The student is responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. This course includes one attempt at the certification exam which will be scheduled by the instructor. This is nonrefundable and non-transferable. This program is eligible for TPEG funds and a payment plan. Students are automatically enrolled in UTMB student health for the semester.

Certified EKG Technician

Study the heart’s anatomy, function and how it produces electricity and how one records this electricity with the EKG and telemetry monitor. This course addresses the electrical-cardio changes of commonly seen diseases and heart rhythm disturbances. Successful completion should prepare students for the NHA certification exam and introduce them to the skills necessary for employment in the field.

Students must meet healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling in the course. Exam will be scheduled by instructor and is non-refundable/non-transferable. This program is eligible for TPEG funds and a payment plan.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

The CCMA has been educated and tested in a wide scope of general, clinical, and administrative responsibilities. As the elderly population increases, healthcare facilities, and hospitals have a great demand for Medical Assistants. Earning your CCMA is great way to get started on a path to a career in Healthcare.

This course includes one attempt at the CMAA exam, which will be scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable. Students must purchase scrubs. MASSAGE THERAPY “HEALING HANDS”

Massage Therapy

Are you looking for a career where you can help others feel better by relieving their pain and stress? If so, the Galveston College Massage Therapy program may be right for you. This comprehensive program provides the education, skills and hands-on practical experience you need to pursue this rewarding career.

This three semester program features classroom instruction, hands-on training and client service internships. To help you transition from student to practitioner, you will complete an internship in which you work directly with clients to provide massages.

This program meets the requirements of individuals planning to take the MBLEX exam and State Jurisprudence Examination for state licensing put forth by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and presents material in business practices and ethics, anatomy and physiology, health and hygiene, chair massage, pathology, hydrotherapy, kinesiology, history of massage, body mechanics, massage techniques and rehabilitative aspects of massage. Additionally, students will have a practice internship on proper massage protocol for various populations.

This program runs over three semesters and combines classroom lecture with a “hands-on” skills laboratory setting, including internship. It meets the criteria for a State Recognized Level One Certificate of Completion. Students who successfully complete the course should be prepared to take the (TDLR) exam for licensure as a massage therapist in the State of Texas. This program is eligible for TPEG funds and payment plans.

Pipefitter Helper

Students who complete NCCER Core and Level 1 can earn an occupational skills award along with NCCER credentials. The basics of pipefitting are presented and students do hands-on projects in the shop fabricating pipe layouts. This program is eligible for TPEG and payment plans.

Automotive Diesel Technician Two Semesters

The Galveston College program, which is comprised of two Occupational Skills awards which combine for a Level One Certification, is taught at the Ball High School automotive and diesel technology lab and is open to interested students of all ages. Students who complete both courses of Diesel Engine Testing and Repair and both courses in Automotive Climate Controls earn a Level One Certification from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Diesel Engine Testing and Repair - I or II

This high demand career training provides instruction in engine measuring tools, and the principles of operation for major engine components. Students are briefed on the materials needed to take the ASE test of Diesel Engines. Students must complete both courses to be awarded an Occupational Skills Certificate. *Spring semester is not available for registration until late October.

Automotive Climate Controls System Theory - I or II

Explore and familiarize yourself with the theories and systems of Automotive AC and heating system malfunctions, manual and electronic climate controls and safety. EPA guidelines for refrigerant replacement are presented. Students must wear PPE. Students must complete both courses to be awarded an Occupational Skills Certificate. *Spring semester is not available for registration until late October.

COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY

Computer Support Technician

This program explores the PC system from software, hardware and operating system points of view. Topics covered include system boards, processors, memory, power supplies, input/output (I/O) ports, internal adapters, printers and basic networking devices.

Software topics include client/server operating systems and installation, as well as licensing software application. The knowledge integrates with fundamental customer support concepts for the operation of a help desk or call center. The fundamentals of computer networking including the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network architecture such as local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) are addressed. Other topics of discussion include: network topologies, network protocols and services, routers and switches, wireless and access points, Virtual Private networks (VPN) security and IP address and subnetting. Students must enroll in all three classes. Students will need to purchase textbooks and pay for the exam. This program is eligible for TPEG funds and payment plans.

This beginning class is for those students who want to understand the underlying components that occur in every drawing. Students will learn a variety of techniques using a variety or drawing materials and tools. Emphases is placed on visual analysis, structural sketches, quick sketches, layering and long drawings on good paper. Students start out creating small, quick drawings from observations of small basic environments and then move to larger more complicated illusionary space. This beginning art class is for those students that want to understand what the different components in every work of art do. Students will make graphite drawings that emphasize each of the visual elements, such as line, shape, texture, value and form in combination with the principles of design. Digital Arts

A studio art course that explores the potential of the computer hardware and software medium for their visual, conceptual and practical uses in the visual arts. *A senior citizen discount is available. Cost: $430 *

Painting I & II Cost: $460 *

This class is for those students want to learn how to develop their artistic skills by improving their understanding of the painting medium. Students start by making paintings of basic observed compositions. Students can learn steps that improve their work over time as they work toward making more complex paintings. Students learn about different tools, materials and techniques used in the making of paintings. Emphasis is placed on learning to see with greater clarity what is happening in the works students create. Class runs simultaneously with academic Painting course.

Galveston College Community Chorale

The Galveston College Community Chorale is a non-auditioned organization of singers. The chorale performs at least three concerts a year in the community with repertoire ranging from classical sacred and secular music of the great composers to modern day contemporary music. They have even performed at Carnegie Hall. Galveston College will follow the CDC recommendations for music events.
