The Women In Industry conference is designed to provide information about the excellent career opportunities for women in the petrochemical and construction industries. In May of 2023, Instrumentation Technology student, Alicia Vela, will walk across the Galveston College graduation stage for the second time. In 2003, Alicia earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in accounting. She fondly remembers being nine months pregnant with her first child when she received her first degree.

Prior to earning her accounting degree, she worked for the Hotel Galvez, Tremont, and Harbor House Hotels in their human resources department. After completing her degree, she moved to the accounting department, working in various positions, including payroll specialist, general cashier, and accounting manager. In 2007, Ms. Vela learned of a position available at the City of Galveston Police Department. She was selected for the Police Administrative Service Manager position, where she worked through 2022. Alicia described herself as a “lifelong learner,” and wanted to continue to explore other career options. In 2019, she attended the Women In Industry Conference (WII) to learn about career opportunities in the petrochemical and construction Industries. During the conference, she attended a panelist session where a variety of women talked about their various careers and how rewarding they found their work. During the panel discussion, she learned about the role of a process technician and, after further research, decided to enroll at College of the Mainland in that program. She began process technology classes in January 2021, and after the first semester, decided that was not the correct career path for her.

She reflected on the WII conference and recalled having an interest in instrumentation technology. She discovered there was an Associate of Applied Science Program in Instrumentation Technology at Galveston College and reached out to talk with a Galveston College Student Advisor. After additional research, she realized this was the career she wished to pursue. She began the Instrumentation Technology Program in the Fall of 2021 and was one of two women in the class. She again attended the Women In Industry Conference in March 2022 and ended that day knowing this would be an ideal career change for her. Galveston College Instrumentation Technology Program Director and Instructor Dr. Michael Stickney said: “Alicia has been an excellent student and I was impressed to see her begin her job search so early in her final semester.” Alicia saw a “Multi Skill Technician” position posted at prominent petrochemical company in last summer. She decided to apply as she had both an accounting background and experience in integrated control systems, testing, and the analyzation of control circuitry, as well as maintenance of instruments and control settings. The company shared that they had received 2,800 applications for the Multi Skill Technician position, and Alicia was one of eight candidates interviewed. She received an offer of employment soon after.

She describes herself as motivated by her daughter and son and wants to be set an example of lifelong learning. Her 19-year-old daughter, Adamari, followed her path and is now enrolled in the Galveston College Instrumentation Technology Program. Alicia will be in attendance at the Women In Industry Conference with her daughter on March 23, 2023, and they are both confident they will walk away with the vital information needed to pursue a high demand, high-growth career. Finally, she plans to take analytics classes in the future, as she believes gaining more information will help her excel within the petrochemical industry. Even after completing two Associate Degrees, she realizes additional college classes have the potential to help her gain new, relevant skills! Alicia Vela completed the Instrumentation Technology Program while working a full-time job and parenting two teenagers.

SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS

When Ball High junior Sophie Garcia was asked how she became interested in welding, she said “I have several family members who worked as welders” who inspired her. Her stepfather was so pleased when she registered for welding classes her sophomore year that he took her shopping to find just the right welding hood and gloves. Following a recent Ball High field trip to San Jacinto College, she said her interest in welding intensified. Ball High students toured an area where underwater welders are trained, and Sophie was mesmerized by the cylinders of water designed to create an underwater experience for welders. After high school graduation, she plans to consider underwater welding a possible career path.

In January 2023, she began an internship at Gulf Copper Dry Dock and Rig Repair, arranged by Galveston Career Connect, Ball High Internship Coordinator Lisa Dill. Sophie is one of three Ball High students assigned to Gulf Copper who get to observe projects such as the restoration of the Battleship Texas, currently in progress at their Pelican Island facility. Sophie begins at 7:30 AM on Friday mornings, with a safety meeting where potential hazards are discussed. Instruction on various welding layouts follows. Mr. Cirilo Salazar, Fabrication Manager at Gulf Copper, who supervises the Ball High interns, said, “Sophie is doing great and demonstrates a good work ethic.”

With one more year of training remaining at Ball High, Sophie is eager to develop more advanced welding skills. She anticipates graduating from Ball High School in 2024, and she has a promising future. Her eagerness to participate in the internship opportunity at Gulf Copper demonstrates her ability to be an strong member of the welding workforce. Employers frequently reiterate how valuable punctuality is, and as Mr. Salazar said, “Sophie understands the importance of arriving on time and giving her best throughout the day!”

What a difference a year makes! When Ball High junior Maryann Gately attended the 2022 Women In Industry Conference, she joined a break-out session titled “Increasing Apprenticeships and Jobs,” led by Carla Thompson, then Workforce Development Manager of the Western Region of Turner Industries Group. After Ms. Thompson finished her presentation, Maryann introduced herself and asked how she could qualify for a welding position at Turner Industries. On the spot, Ms. Thompson shared her email address with Maryann and invited her to visit Pasadena to tour the Turner Fabrication Facility. Maryann followed up with Ms. Thompson, and the tour was arranged exclusively for Maryann. The exchange between Ms. Thompson and Maryann illustrates the valuable networking opportunities at this annual conference, where students can meet industry professionals and establish business relationships .

Maryann said her father also took welding classes when he attended Ball High School, and she gravitates toward high school electives that challenge her. That challenge has captivated her and led her to consider welding a longterm career.

MEET TODAY’S KEYNOTE PRESENTERS

Crystal R. Davis is a First Line Supervisor at the ExxonMobil Olefins Plant in Baytown, Texas, where she was born and raised. She is a graduate of Baytown’s Robert E. Lee High School and Lee College with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Process Technology.

Crystal joined ExxonMobil in Aug 2010, hiring in as ExxonMobil’s first Process Intern through the Lee College program. Crystal began as a process operator and has been in various roles, from Console Supervisor, Process Turnaround Planner, and most recently, Shift Team Leader.

“My father worked for ExxonMobil for thirty-seven years and would say I could do his job and do it successfully. He has always been a huge advocate for women in the industry and encouraged me to take on new challenges. I hope to lead by example for my three-year-old daughter, teaching her woman are major contributors to the workforce. My goal is to show them they can be successful in this industry”.

Amanda puts her 25 years in the industry to work each day as a leader at Worley. Her focus on collaboration and diversity accelerates her teams –teams that have consistently delivered outstanding results. Having gotten her start in construction supply chain, Amanda knows the critical nature of delivering the right solutions in the right way at the right time. She has built her success as a forward thinker who values relationships, anticipates market shifts and takes decisive action. This has enabled Amanda to transform businesses and drive growth during times of change. Personally, Amanda is raising a high school and a college student of her own and knows first-hand how important it is for the leaders of tomorrow to see and hear from women who are making a difference in their careers today.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Janis Lucas is currently a Mechancial Supervisor at the Baytown Complex of ExxonMobil. “I have worked for ExxonMobil for 19 years and my entire career has been at the Baytown Complex. While attending Lee College for industrial classes, it was several of my college instructors that encouraged me to apply for a process technician position at ExxonMobil. Now, two decades later, I have worked in operations, safety department and mechanical. I like the challenges that come with each new position, getting to mentor coworkers and growing the talent of our employees.”

A Mechanical Supervisor demonstrates the ability to provide maintenance leadership of company and external resources through all stages of asset maintenance, inclusive of minor capital project support, new facility construction, and maintenance support throughout full facility operational like. Also, focusing on developing the capability of the maintenance organization and staff supporting asset maintenance.

Catherine Engels is a Projects Process Mechanical Coordinator with ExxonMobil Refinery in Baytown, Texas. In this role, Catie coordinates and manages process and mechanical jobs for Oil Movement projects team. Catie started in operations and shift work, having spent her first three years as a unit operator. With her process knowledge and experience, Catie quickly became a console operator for the next seven years. Because of her safety and risk knowledge and safety team participation, she was asked to assist with rollout of the new Permitting system that encompassed all of the Baytown sites (ExxonMobil Baytown Chem Plant, ExxonMobil Baytown Refinery, ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins plant and Mont Belvieu Plastics Plant). In total, Catie has more than 15 years of operations experience at ExxonMobil. Catie is excited to be a part of the Women’s Operations Network.

Prior to starting her career as an operator, Catie was a high level national gymnast and coach. Outside of work, Catie manages her time between being a mother of 5 wonderful children, wife and still coaches gymnastics.

Rachel O’Donnell has over 15 years of experience in recruitment, talent acquisition, and campus relations, with seven years in the energy industry at Phillips 66. Rachel works to lead the Technical School recruitment efforts on behalf of the company and is passionate about serving students and guiding them through a successful candidate experience. Rachel sits on several Career Advisory Boards with TAMU, OSU, and U of H and has her Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Wyoming.

LaTrice Weels started in the business field with a Master in Business Administration and decided after 19 years she wanted a hands-on career with strong in-field experience. As a result, she pivoted careers to the dynamic petrochemical industry.

She earned an AAS in Process Technology and began her new career as a process operator. After 6 years working as a process operator in an Olefins plant at Chevron Phillips Chemical, she shifted her focus to a strategic digital transformation project management position designed to enhance her sphere of influence.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Elizabeth Beckham is a member of Turner Industries’ award winning Workforce Development Team. She has over 20 years experience in HR and Training from multiple industries, of that experince, 15 years have been in the petrochemical and construction industry. Elizabeth is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and a Master’s degree in Workforce Training and Development from the University of Southern Mississippi. Additional credentials include: National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Master Trainer, NCCER Construction Workforce Development Professional, Certified Occupational Safety Manager (COSM), Certified Knowledge Manager (CKM), and Certified Learning Professional (CLP) certificate from the Jack and Patti Phillips Workforce Learning and Performance Institute at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Amanda Dever is the Global Environmental Leader for Olin Chemicals Division. She has 18 years of engineering experience, including six years of consulting. She is a Women of Olin Steering Team member and leads the Female Talent Pipeline Committee to ensure future talent is lined up to work for Olin in the coming years.

Jennifer Oshikanlu is a Biological Engineer with over 13 years of environmental compliance expertise. Her background consists of improving compliance performance, implementing new regulatory programs, and serving as a subject matter expert for state and federal regulations at chemical manufacturing facilities and refineries in Texas and the surrounding gulf states. Currently, Jennifer serves as a Senior Environmental Specialist at Olin Corporation in Freeport, TX.

Crystal Poole is trained as a board operator, outside operator, and lab technician. She is a Women of Olin Representative to local junior colleges and loves sharing her experience, guidance, and tips for getting interviews. Her energy, candor, grit, and passion for good work shines through.

Gwen Soliman (Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering University of Cincinnati, MBA Darla Moore School of Business), Gwen has been with Olin for 18 years and has worked in 5 Olin locations. She has held roles in production, leadership, and as plant manager of our Tracy, CA, site. Gwen is currently the Business Readiness Leader for an SAP deployment project and a Women of Olin Steering Team Member.
