A Message from the Director of Continuing Education

As we step into spring, I am thrilled to share our upcoming programs designed to inspire and empower our community. At Galveston College Continuing Education, we believe that learning is a lifelong journey, and this season brings a fresh slate of courses and workshops tailored to meet your needs. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to give us a call! We’re excited to hear your ideas and collaborate.

Our spring offerings include a variety of subjects, from professional development and creative arts to health and wellness. Whether you’re looking to enhance your skills, explore a new hobby, or advance your career, there’s something for everyone.

We are particularly excited about our new partnerships with industry experts who will be leading specialized workshops. Georgie Holbrook will share her insights on unlocking potential and bringing out the best in everyone. Lee Van Dusen, with his keen business acumen, has helped numerous organizations achieve remarkable success. And Dave Hedgepeth, whose passion for sailing shines through his teaching, all our instructors make learning engaging and enjoyable.

These sessions are designed not only to provide valuable knowledge but also to foster networking, collaboration, and a lot of fun among participants. Each course will be an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and grow together in a supportive environment. We can’t wait for you to join us!

HOW TO REGISTER FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES

Please register at least one week prior to class start date.

Tuition and fees must be paid upon registration. Students must complete registration five business days prior to a course starting. Students can register online from the page www.gc.edu/ce with a valid MasterCard, Visa, Discover Card, or American Express.

Senior Discounts: Classes listed with an “*” are eligible for a 50% senior discount for those over the age of 65 and who live in-district. This discount is applied upon registration.

Class Cancellations, Room Changes, and Rescheduling: Courses with low enrollment prior to a start date are canceled prior to the start date. Students will be notified by phone or email when a class they are enrolled in has been canceled; however, we are sometimes unable to reach everyone. A refund of 100% is automatically processed upon cancellation of classes. To help avoid cancellations PLEASE REGISTER AT LEAST A WEEK PRIOR TO THE START DATE, and encourage your friends to register with you. Occasionally, canceled courses are rescheduled for a later start date, and you will be notified by phone when the opportunity presents itself. In the event of a class room change notice of the room change will be posted on the Continuing Education doors and the classroom that was originally listed.

Refunds: Refunds prior to the start of class will be 100%. Refund requests should be made in person or by phone to 409-944-1344. Refund requests must be received during normal business hours and at least one business day prior to the start date of the class. When a class is canceled you will automatically be refunded the full course amount. There are NO REFUNDS GIVEN AFTER A COURSE HAS BEGUN. There are NO REFUNDS for ED2GO.

Parking: All students must have a valid GC parking sticker. Please pick up in the Media Center Rm: R-120). Visitors to campus must park in the visitors parking lot at the corner of Avenue Q and 39th St. Unpermitted cars parked in the Moody lot will be towed.

Student ID Cards-Visitors: Enrolled students are required to posses a valid student ID card. These may be obtained in the Media Center (Rm: R-120) once you have your payment receipt. Visitors to campus and those who are only here for a short contract training class must display a visitor name tag on their person. These are available in the CE offices.

Record of Completion And CEUs: Nationally recognized CEUs may be awarded on certain approved occupation-related courses. One CEU is awarded for every 10 contact hours. All courses will be given a Certificate of Completion. It is up to the individual student to see if these courses are eligible for CEUs.

ALLIED HEALTH

Certified Nurse Aide

Students must complete our healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling. Scan to View Healthcare Program Requirements & Instructions:

Train to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in a long-term care facility. Course topics include residents’ rights, communication, safety observation, reporting and basic comfort and care. Students who successfully complete this program earn a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award, and start on the pathway to earn a level one certification as a Patient Care Tech. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor.

Students must complete our healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling. Students must wear burgundy scrubs with student patches and have a watch with a second hand. The student is responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. Students are responsible for certification testing with Prometric and paying testing fees online. This is separate from tuition; the instructor will schedule testing dates for the class. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor outside of the regular classroom days. The program is eligible for TPEG and a payment plan.

Fast Track Certified Nurse Aide

Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Get started as an entry-level phlebotomist and prepare for your certification exam with the National Healthcare Association (NHA). Study the skills used in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods. Students who successfully complete this program earn a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award, and start on the pathway to earn a Level One certification as a Patient Care Tech. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor.

Students must complete our healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling. Students must wear burgundy scrubs with student patches and a white lab coat to clinical sites The student is responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. This course includes one attempt at the certification exam which will be scheduled by the instructor. This is nonrefundable and non-transferable. This program is eligible for TPEG funds and a payment plan. Students are automatically enrolled in UTMB student health for the semester.

Fast Track Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Medical Coding

Certified EKG Technician

Study the heart’s anatomy, function and how it produces electricity and how one records this electricity with the EKG and telemetry monitor. This course addresses the electrical-cardio changes of commonly seen diseases and heart rhythm disturbances. Successful completion should prepare students for the NHA certification exam and introduce them to the skills necessary for employment in the field. This program is eligible for TPEG funds and a payment plan.

Books, study guide, practice test, 1 attempt at licensure exam $990

Train for an in-demand healthcare career in medical coding and prepare for industry certification in this online course. Medical Coders are responsible for processing patient data including medical records. In this position, you will code a patient’s diagnosis and then request payment from the patient’s insurance company. You will play an important role in ensuring that healthcare providers are quickly and accurately paid for the treatment they give patients.

Healthcare Providers Basic Life Support CPR Training

Do your business employees need CPR training? Get your training done in ½ a day! Galveston College provides CPR training for individuals, companies, groups and organizations with flexible scheduling. Students are trained by our American Heart Association Instructors to help infants as well as adults in an emergency situation. Classes run for 4.5 hours and a textbook is included. Each class $72

AVAILABLE for Health Care and Craft/Trade Programs. TPEG (Texas Public Education Grant) can help pay for Continuing Ed courses. Healthcare students must file a 24-25 FAFSA, complete the background check, and turn in Healthcare Requirements to qualify. Craft/Trade programs only require a FAFSA.

EARN CERTIFICATIONS TO PREPARE YOU FOR AN ENTRY LEVEL JOB IN THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY!

Diesel Engine Testing & Repair I and II

This high demand career training provides instruction in engine measuring tools and the principles of operation for major engine components. Students are briefed on the materials needed to take the ASE test of Diesel Engines.

Students must complete both courses to be awarded an Occupational Skills Certificate recognized by THECB.

Automotive Climate Controls Systems Theory and

Automotive Climate Controls Systems II

Explore and familiarize yourself with the theories and systems of Automotive AC and heating system malfunctions, manual and electronic climate controls and safety. EPA guidelines for refrigerant replacement are presented.

Students must wear PPE. Students must complete both courses to be awarded an Occupational Skills Certificate.

YOUR LEVEL 1 AUTOMOTIVE CERTIFICATIONS IN JUST TWO SEMSTERS!

The Galveston College program, comprised of two Occupational Skills awards when combined, earn a Level One Certification from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

Students must take both Diesel I and II, and Auto Climate Control I and II to earn the Level One Certification. Courses are taught at the Ball High School automotive and diesel technology lab and are open to interested students of all ages. Students may choose to take both programs simultaneously, (Monday-Thursday), for two semesters. Or, they can take the programs separately. Students who currently have completed just one of the programs of Auto or Diesel can return at a later date to take the other program and earn the Level I certification.

Starting a Business

Whether your business is new, growing, or has existed for many years, it faces daily and long-term challenges. These Galveston College Continuing Education courses are designed to employ proven practices to help support your mission, ongoing success, and performance excellence.

A business is more than the sum of its individual components, processes, and activities. This course will take a look at your business from a systems perspective and help align and integrate the activities that compose your business system.

People often view their business as many separate activities that need to be performed. Seeing the connection between parts is essential to business performance excellence.

Participants will self-assess and identify key information to help focus on key performance requirements and results.

Digital Photography and Photo Editing

Get the most out of your camera! Discover how to improve your photos with the technical and artistic basics of digital photography. Explore the basics of taking photos and critique them in a friendly and collaborative environment. Topics include camera settings, basic compositions and different types of photography.

Using photos students take for the class, basic photo editing techniques are reviewed using Photoshop. Some techniques covered include enhancing colors, fixing blemishes and “digital plastic surgery.” This class is for the novice photographer. Bring your digital SLR camera with flash and interchangeable lenses and be comfortable using a computer. Cost: $164

Intro to Computers

For adults who lack familiarity with computers, life in the modern age can be a challenge. While tablets and smartphones account for a large portion of our daily technology use, computers are still an important tool. In this course we will go over basics such as accessing email, using search engines, joining social media platforms (e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter), avoiding computer viruses, sharing files, backing up data and regular maintenance to keep computers running efficiently. In this course you will explore the basics of the ceramic process, from hand building to the potter’s wheel. Some supplies are provided, but students will need to purchase additional supplies. A supply list will be given to you on the first class meeting.

This beginning class is for those students who want to understand the underlying components that occur in every drawing. Students will learn a variety of techniques using a variety or drawing materials and tools. Emphases is placed on visual analysis, structural sketches, quick sketches, layering and long drawings on good paper. Class runs simultaneously with academic Drawing course.

Painting I & II

This class is for those students want to learn how to develop their artistic skills by improving their understanding of the painting medium. Students start by making paintings of basic observed compositions, learning steps that improve their work over time as they work toward making more complex paintings. Students learn about different tools, materials and techniques used in the making of paintings. Emphasis is placed on learning to see with greater clarity what is happening in the works students create. Class runs simultaneously with academic Painting course.

Creative Writing with Teyana Pugh

Bring your journal if you have one. Instructor Teyana Pugh is a published author ready to help you start your project if you don’t know where to begin. In this class, you will discuss writing prompts, poetry, character development, POV, and themes. You may want to write for fun or as a stress reliever. All are welcome.

Galveston College Community Chorale

The Galveston College Community Chorale is a non-auditioned organization of singers. The chorale performs at least three concerts a year in the community with repertoire ranging from classical sacred and secular music of the great composers to modern day contemporary music. They have even performed at Carnegie Hall. Cost: $50

Sailing Lessons

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the operation of a recreational sailboat, offering knowledge and skills to actively help in the navigating of the vessel. The courses will be a combination of theory and sailing sessions. Theory will also be taught on the vessel. Courses are 7 hours total, and take place in one day, on the vessel. Students between 14 years and 18 years of age may participate with a parent waiver signed the morning of each class. Instructor: David Hedgepeth is a certified instructor of the American Sailing Association; a U.S. Coast Guard-approved instructor, and years of experience as a Ship Master worldwide.

Sailing: Level I Cost $125

Each student who completes this course will have the necessary knowledge and skills to actively assist in the elementary operation of a recreational sailing vessel. There are no prerequisite courses or experience requirements for Level I.

MASSAGE THERAPY

This program meets the requirements of individuals planning to take the MBLEX exam and State Jurisprudence Examination for state licensing put forth by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and presents material in business practices and ethics, anatomy and physiology, health and hygiene, chair massage, pathology, hydrotherapy, kinesiology, history of massage, body mechanics, massage techniques and rehabilitative aspects of massage. Additionally, students will have a practice internship on proper massage protocol for various populations.

This program runs over three semesters and combines classroom lecture with a “hands-on” skills. Call us at 409-944-1344 to learn more.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

The CCMA has been education and tested in a wide scope of general, clinical and administrative responsibilities. Earning your CCMA is a great way to get started on a path to a career in Healthcare. Two semester program recognized by THECB with a level 1 certificate. Included in the course is one attempt at the CCMA exam, which will be scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
