Saturday 4 March, 2.30pm – 3.30pm ILLUSTRATED TALK: Ó Conaire & the Revolution Born by the Galway docks in 1882, Pádraic Ó Conaire joined the Irish Volunteers and, it seems, the Irish Republican Brotherhood while working as a civil servant in London. In 1918, he published the first important fictional response to the Easter Rising, Seacht mBua an Éirí Amach (Seven Virtues of the Rising). Join Brendan McGowan, Education Officer, to learn more about the man and his work. Age 12+ Saturday 11 March, 11am – 12.30pm WORKSHOP: Ireland’s Marine Mammals In association with the Galway Atlantaquaria and the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG), learn about the variety of marine mammals found in Irish waters. Examine whale bones and investigate the different feeding methods of baleen and toothed whales. Explore the journeys marine mammals make along our coast and create a seal or whale painting. Age 7 – 12

Based on the life of the 19th century Irish politician Michael Davitt (1846−1906), this screening will take you on a musical journey through his life as agrarian agitator, founder of the Irish National Land League and Home Rule advocate. The first shell produced in Galway, dated 12 February 1917, was dedicated to local businessman Máirtín Mór McDonogh. Join Jackie Uí Chionna, author of He was Galway: Máirtín Mór McDonogh, 1860–1934 (2016), as she discusses Máirtín Mór in the context of the Great War and Easter Rising, and his role in the establishment of the Galway shell factory. Join Adrian Martyn, author of The Tribes of Galway: 1124-1642 (2016), to find out about these tribes and why the city is named in their honour. Ages 12+
Thursday 23 February, 11am – 12.30pm MIDTERM WORKSHOP: Irish Marine Wonders Ever wanted to know more about Ireland's marine diversity? Join team members from Galway Atlantaquaria to learn about some of the animals and plants that live in the ocean around Ireland. Examine a range of biofacts and seaweeds, carry out a squid dissection and design your own camouflaged animal. Age 7 – 12 Thursday 23 February, 2pm – 3.30pm MIDTERM WORKSHOP: Learning from the Past … Weapons Join archaeologist Anne Carey to learn about weaponry in prehistory and the medieval period and have a go making your own bow and a medieval trebuchet, a giant sling for hurling missiles used during siege warfare. Age 7 – 12 Friday 24 February 11am – 12.30pm MIDTERM WORKSHOP: Caring for our Oceans Join team members from Galway Atlantaquaria to learn about marine litter, over-fishing and how the ocean’s water quality is being affected by people.
