Feast

A FANTASTIC

Throw a Friendsgiving to remember By KAYLEE POCHE

GAMBIT DETAILS

NOVEMBER 2023

Whether you aren’t spending Thanksgiving with your family or just want a bonus celebration with pals, Friendsgivings have

10

become a November staple over the last decade or so. They provide another chance to gather (a different set of) loved ones, give thanks and — perhaps most importantly — guzzle gravy. Depending on personality types, the size of the gathering and your budget, Friendsgiving can be a more laissez-faire event or a more lavish one. But at the end of the day, what really matters is everyone coming together and having their bellies full by night’s end. With six Friendsgivings and counting under my belt, here’s what you should keep in mind when throwing one.

Nailing down the basics First of all, you need to decide how many people you want to invite. Is it going to be a more intimate inner circle occasion with 10 people or less? Or are you actually going to be convening a small army? Next, consult those people to determine when works best for them. The weekend leading up to Thanksgiving is my favorite time to have a Friendsgiving. In my experience, people are often on board because it’s early enough before Thanksgiving Thursday to where even people who are going out of town usually haven’t left yet. In addition to deciding the guest list and a date, you need to be securing a location. Do you want your guests to eat indoors or outdoors? If it’s a small space, you might need to keep the guest list tight. On the other hand, if there’s plenty of room and you’re brave, you could even consider making it open invite — within reason. Even if it’s outdoors, you’ll need access to an indoor space with an oven for reheating purposes, and in that case, you’ll want a rain plan.

Get by with a little help from your friends at a potluck-style holiday dinner. PHOTO BY DR AZEN ZIGIC / GETT Y IMAGES

Once you’ve nailed down where, when and who you want to invite, you’ll want to start sending out invites (a digital flyer or text will do) so you can get a solid headcount. That way you’ll know how many tables and chairs you’ll need should you opt for a sit-down dinner. For accumulating enough tables and seating, don’t be afraid to crowdsource. I’ve often found that a good Friendsgiving takes a village. If there are simply too many people for that to be practical, you don’t have to have everyone seated at a dining table. Sitting on the floor and eating off a coffee table is perfectly fine — as long as everyone’s eating.

Collaborating on the menu

This will look different depending on your budget, but in my opinion, part

of the magic of Friendsgiving is having dinner potluck-style, with people bringing whatever they’re most comfortable making. And the beauty of a potluck is that with everyone pitching in, there will be more than enough food and drinks — and less cleanup. To keep track of the menu, I suggest creating a shared document. Whether it’s a Google Doc or a note on the Notes app, this will ensure you don’t have three pumpkin pies and no turkey. Plus, that way those who prefer to wait before deciding what to bring will know what the gaps are in the menu and should be able to fill them accordingly. A shared menu will also help you determine what food will need to be reheated in the oven. I recommend starting the event earlier than you want to eat to allot for reheating time. Having guests with dishes to heat up arrive on time will also help avoid dinnertime delays.

When planning the menu, make sure there are some snacks and appetizers guests can munch on while dinner is being prepared. Don’t forget to ask guests ahead of time if they have any dietary restrictions — whether they’re vegetarian, gluten free or have allergies — and make sure there are enough options for everyone. Apart from the dining tables, you may also want a smaller table to act as a makeshift bar as kitchen counter space is likely to be full with the night’s spread. You can even put a cooler full of ice underneath for further convenience.

Setting the mood

Thanksgiving is not a holiday known for its decorations, and even just some Thanksgiving or fall-themed tablecloths go a long way. Last year, I chose an activity tablecloth with turkeys to color, mazes and tic-tac-toe boards, and people got into it. Otherwise, you can do as little or as much decorating as you want, but I’d advise not going too overboard on tablescapes because you still want plenty of room to eat. That being said, candles are always nice, and last year I found some fall garlands on sale from

the motherland Joann Fabrics that added to the ambiance. A good playlist is arguably more important than decorations. Last year on ours we included songs that mentioned November, thanks, friends — and even a few about frenemies. But with a tight-knit group of friends, it could be precious to also curate songs associated with memories the friend group has together, such as from a band they saw live or a song someone sang at karaoke.

Activities

Dinner is more than enough, but it never hurts to have a few extra activities lined up as well. There’s always the cheesy but heartwarming activity of going around the room and saying what you’re thankful for. But who am I kidding? The mere thought of that gives me anxiety, and a post-dinner board game is much more my speed. Any type of friendship game that puts your knowledge of each other to the test works would especially fit the theme. One of my favorites is Priorities, where one person ranks five random items from love to hate and everyone else must guess how they ranked them. (Last year, this may or may not have started a

tiff between a married couple over the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.) In a smaller group, you could also try The Best Friend Game, a version of “The Newlywed Game” for up to six friends.

A final note Planning a Friendsgiving involves making a lot of decisions. Getting a few

organized friends on board to act as an unofficial planning committee can help relieve some of the stress of planning. And if you find yourself stretched too thin in any way, don’t be afraid to lean on your community for help. After all, that’s the Friendsgiving spirit.
