Asfarastheeyecansee,whimsyabounds, whetherit’sintheformofapileofthrowpillows depictingvariousanimals,agoldenlampfrom theRitz-Carltonrepurposedwithahandmade butterflyshade,orarockabilly-inspiredstencileddresser.Statementpiecesareeverywhere,

“Wewenttoauctions,estatesales,consignmentstores,”shesays.“Wepivotedourmodel andstartedgettingmoreofavariety.”
Shealsoscoursmarkets,goestothefamous RoundTopAntiquesFairinTexas,andpullsitems fromlocalestatesales
Manyoftheitems,includingsolidwood furnishings,couchesandsofas,diningsetsand morehavebeenrepurposedandpolishedby Hannan,aformerteacherwhohasabackground infineart.
Whenlocalhotelsgetridoftheir(often generic-looking)furniture,Hannancomestothe
rescue,oftenrepaintingorrefurbishingtheitems beforere-sellingthem.
Sometimessherevampsitemsbyadding,say, abrightcolortoadresser,changingitfroma serious-lookingdarkbrowntoavibrant,sunny yellow.Othertimes,she’lladdsomenewhardwareordrawerpulls,ormaybeusestencils.
Hannanisalsoknownforherexpertisein upholstery,whichsheusestotransformsomethingfrumpyintoafresh,modernpiece offurniture.
Shelikesworkingwithvintageandantique furnitureasabase.Olderitems,shesays,have “goodbones,”especiallycomparedtomass-produceditemsfrombigboxstoresmadefrom low-qualitymaterials.Plus,usedfurnitureismore eco-friendly
“Everythingwasbuiltsomuchbetterback then,”shesays.“Also,wherewearewiththeenvironment,youreallydon’thavetobuyanything new.Youcanjustkeepitinservice.”
She’sdeterminedtokeepqualityitemsfrom meetingtheirfateinthedumpster.
“Keepinggoodfurnitureoutofthelandfillis whatdrewmeintothebusiness,”shesays
Hannanisn’tastrangertoMid-City.Shelivesin theneighborhood,andpreviouslyownedCanal FurnitureLiquidatorsnearBayouSt.John.But shelostmostofherinventoryinawarehousefire in2018,andlaterreopenedinHarahan
ButareturntoMid-Citywasalwaysthegoal.
“I’vebeentalkingaboutgettingbackheresince thedaythefirehappened,”shesays.
Nextmonth,thestorewillcelebrateitsgrand openingonApril20andthepossibilitiesforthe spaceseemasendlessasHannan’simagination. Currently,itisopenpart-timeandbyappointment.(Checkfloor13nola.comforhours.)
HannanplansonhostingclassesatFloor13,in whichshe’llteachpeoplehowtofixupfurniture andlearnthebasicsofupholsteringandpainting.
Shealsowantstoturnpartofthespaceintoan artgallery,withrotatingshows,inhopesofcreatingmoreofanartsceneintheneighborhood.She hopestobringotherlocalartistsintothemix.
“Wewanttobringthecommunity,especiallyin Mid-City,together,”shesays.
