Blue shutters framing this original wood door give the orange house some zesty personality. But they also serve a function: to protect the house from storm damage.

Doorways set the first impression of a home — a portal into your living space that can

10

give visitors a hint of what’s inside. Traditionally, certain colors on doors corresponded to the nature of those living behind them. A red door, historically, is a welcoming sign that indicated a safe space for travelers to seek accommodations or refuge. Darker blues, meanwhile, could signify prosperity or abundance — while lighter shades indicate tranquility and peace. Of course, the shades of New Orleans doors these days may speak more to personal preference — and in the same way that we are prone to painting our homes in bright, tropical colors, or unlikely combinations, entryways complement and embellish the rest of the architecture and overall vibe. According to local decorator Alex Robinson of ARI (arobinsoninteriors.com), “I think we have the freedom to make that color choice and no one’s going to judge. Doors should suit the style of the home, and it should say a little about you — whether it’s the color or the style.” Other common elements in entryways are doors with built-in windows on the door itself or in the form of transom windows and sidelights. Robinson sees these elements as a reflection of the city’s signature hospitality. “People are pretty open and welcoming here,” she says, noting that curtains are often left open — a sign of literal and metaphorical transparency. “People like to let the light in,” she says. She tends to favor original wooden doors and designs that at least mimic or correspond with historic architecture. “I think preserving natural paneling or carving is great, and refurbishing hardware — keeping the door as original as possible — is always going to look the best,” Robinson says. But within that paradigm, she also loves to see the way that people choose colors, shutters and treatments. “I think it’s so important,” she says. “It’s the first impression people have of your home.”

This door features traditional hardware and a rustic teal color. “The door handle and the mailbox are probably all original here,” Robinson says. “You don’t often find these on newer houses, because the slots have to be customized. You can tell these people preserved the originality of the door, and it’s really cool.”

Ornate stenciling on this doorway’s windows provides a bit of privacy as it obscures some of the glass, making it both functional and decorative, Robinson says. But the lack of window treatments also indicate that it’s a welcoming home.

FA R L E F T: The stained-glass window above the door projects light patterns into the home’s interior when the sun shines through and is likely an original element to the home.

M I DDL E: Painting a door red can be a symbol of hospitality and welcoming. The side lights also provide continuity with the door’s design. L E F T: “This is a nice middle ground between a traditional and modern door,” Robinson says. The yellow color gives it a fresh flair while maintaining some of the original wood carvings and a traditional mail slot. “It fits for New Orleans,” she adds.

Consign Consign offers eclectic home decor By SHELBY SIMON Photos by GARLAND PATTERSON

You never know what you will find in consignment — that’s the beauty of it. On any given day, Consign Consign (1160 Magazine St., 504-354-9158; consign-consign.com) carries one-of-a-kind antique furniture and decor spanning styles of French provincial, mid-century modern, Art Nouveau, Victorian English and more, with a large art collection representing distinctive New Orleans talent, contemporary artists, eclectic vintage prints and originals from countless origins and eras. It is a destination to find items that might inspire you, spark a fond memory of the past or help you reimagine your space. The team is happy to give each client ample room to browse and assist them as needed to create a welcoming experience. Consign Consign was founded on the idea that New Orleanians needed a place to find antiques, home goods and furnishings all in one place without having to scour estate sales or auctions. Adam Lambert, store owner, offers a lifetime of knowledge and expertise, as he and his family have been in the antique business for decades.

The store showcases an eclectic blend of stylish art and home decor.

“Our goal is to make antiques approachable and fun for everyone. No degree in art history necessary,” says Annie Clauss, the store director. The store is currently 100% consignment, providing both a venue for shopping as well as listing anything from large multi-unit estates to a single item for sellers. Those looking to consign can email the shop with pictures, dimensions and the condition of their item, and the store experts will respond with their recommendations on appraisal and information about their process. Sellers can easily track the status of their sales in an online account. People often hear the term “antique” and immediately assume the wares are expensive, but the store stands to change that, Clauss says. Repurposing, reusing and recycling vintage or antique items is not only environmentally friendly, but it can also be economically friendly. “We offer well-made and unique items that have stood the test of time at a comparable or lower price point,” she says. “Personally, I love the idea that vintage items stay in circulation, finding new value with each new home.” Weekly, if not daily, the team curates various sections of the store to highlight different trends or items. “Through our displays we hope to show clients how

Vintage VIVA LA

to incorporate unique items into their home in a way they may not have thought of before,” Clauss says. “For instance, mix-matching patterns and eras, incorporating fine china with your everyday china or using a secretary (desk) as a home bar.” Vintage is trending, and Clauss says the COVID-19 pandemic has motivated people more than ever to put extra thought into making their homes comfortable, inspiring spaces. “People are moving away from big box [stores] and re-engaging with the thrill of the find,” she says, and they “are energized by the thought of repurposing an item. We are consistently impressed with the new and inventive ways people are curating their homes.”

Mixing and matching china patterns is a way to incorporate one-of-akind items into the home.
