From faucets and fixtures to counters and cabinets, Nordic Kitchens builds dream kitchens and baths.
GAMBIT DETAILS
JANUARY 2021
Randall “Randy” Shaw, owner at Nordic Kitchens and Baths, says com-
Nordic constantly updates its inventory to reflect current trends
14 and best-selling appliances.
munity is everything to him. “The success of our business wouldn’t be what it is without our employees working behind the scenes, our installers and delivery people,” he says. “And our business would not be what it is if not for local support.” Nordic celebrates its 26th anniversary next month, and Shaw says it has expanded and evolved its offerings. In the beginning, he and his stepfather, a Norwegian cabinetmaker, and just one other kitchen designer, focused on traditional, European-style cabinets and kitchens. Shaw eventually became the sole proprietor of Nordic Kitchens and Baths and expanded the business to include more contemporary designs and mid-to-luxury grade appliances, which involved a move from a small showroom on Metairie Road into a space three times bigger on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Today, the focus is still kitchens — whether customers want to design a brand new kitchen, update cabinetry or just install a new dishwasher. Nordic also offers high-end appliances, outdoor kitchens, countertops and more. While the focus is mainly on kitchens, the company also can design or install items for bathrooms, studies and “virtually any room in the house that involves cabinetry or appliances,” says Shaw. The staff installs about 25% of what they sell with professionals who have been partners for decades, and to ensure total cohesiveness in a home, they work with interior designers, builders and contractors to ensure complete customer satisfaction. “We’re involved in the project from the very beginning till the very end,” Shaw says. “It’s not uncommon for us to build a friendship with our clients that lasts a lifetime.” Shaw says his clients are creative people — and if they can dream it, he can draw it and he can build it. “We pride ourselves on the design aspect,” he says. “We do a very good job at it and I think that’s what’s built our reputation along with everybody else involved.”
Randall “Randy” Shaw will soon celebrate 26 years of Nordic Kitchens and Baths.
Shaw has seen an increased demand for new products and kitchen updates amid COVID-19 restrictions.
Shaw often invites chefs to host cooking classes in the sample kitchens.
Left photo: Luxury brands represented at Nordic include Sub-Zero, Wolf, Cove, La Cornue, Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet and Miele.
Information, 1818 Veterans Memorial Blvd., 504-888-2300; nordickitchens.com.
The Nordic team is involved from “the beginning to the end” of projects, and Shaw says it’s not uncommon to build long-lasting friendships with clients.
GAMBIT DETAILS
If a showroom display feels like it’s falling out of style, Shaw says he’ll take it off the floor and donate the appliances to Habitat for Humanity or give them to someone who wants to use them. “It costs us money, but it’s the price of doing business,” he says. Due to COVID-19, Shaw says that manufacturers are working overtime to keep up with the demand, as customers are spending more time in their kitchens and seeking new products and other updates. He recommends planning ahead to allow proper time for delivery and installation. As for design work, he and his team are moving full speed ahead right now and are busy as ever. “It’s so great that we get to interact with different people, and that nothing we do is cookie-cutter. It’s all custom; we do things so differently [for each client].” Some of the best ideas the business has ever had, says Shaw, come from the people within the business, now a staff of nine. “I look at everybody here as a big family,” he says. “I might be the sole owner, but I don’t make the decisions. I always get everyone’s input. 100% the success of this business has been a team effort. We take that philosophy into the way we conduct our business every day.”
JANUARY 2021
The showroom offers ample opportunity to view the appliances as they would appear in a home. The showroom at Nordic Kitchens and Baths features high, multi-level ceilings and full displays of kitchens and rooms with brand-new appliances. A full, live demonstration kitchen seats up to 40 people, and twice a year, the team invites chefs to cook for an audience while promoting products and feeding visitors. But Shaw invites anyone to use the space for a cooking class — he’s not going to charge you — just bring your friends, he says. “We want people to come in and experience the environment whether they’re looking to buy a kitchen today or not,” Shaw says. “We want them to talk to their friends about [our showroom] who might want to stop by and look.” The showroom is constantly updating its inventory to reflect current trends, best-selling appliances and designs that the team created and thought, “Wow, that piece looked really good in this space,” he says. Luxury brands include Sub-Zero, Wolf, Cove, La Cornue, Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet and Miele — and Shaw has longstanding close relationships with brand representatives. All of the photos on the Nordic Kitchens and Baths website of kitchens designed by the Nordic Kitchens and Baths team, which are taken annually by architectural photographer Steven Paul Whitsitt.

Two Louisiana artists show new work at LeMieux this month By SARAH RAVITS Artist Kathryn Keller will
a career while she was raising her children. But she has taken art classes throughout her life, and she now spends most of her days working on new paintings, using watercolor for some and oil for others. She focuses on shapes and the relationships of colors and finds deep inspiration from nature and has now made a successful career of it, exhibiting all over the United States. The gallery will also host another exhibit simultaneously, in contrast to Keller’s work. “Louisiana Now” by Shirley Rabe Masinter also features iconic scenes of Louisiana, with a particular focus on interiors and architecture. Shotgun houses, corner stores and bars are prominently featured. For more information, visit lemieuxgalleries.com.

present “Beautiful Isolation” at LeMieux Galleries (332 Julia St., 504-522-5988; lemieuxgalleries. com) starting Jan. 9, debuting a collection that highlights outdoor spaces and rural parts of the state. Keller, who has a home in New Orleans, has been spending most of her days recently at Inglewood Farm in Alexandria, the largest organic farm in Louisiana. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, Keller found herself more isolated from family and friends, and her paintings reflect that. Some of her recent work also reflects the environmental tragedies of Hurricane Laura, including wind damage, flooding and fallen trees. Keller, who is 68, always dabbled in painting as more of a hobby but never solely focused on it as
