New Orleans City Park 1 Palm Drive » New Orleans, LA 70124 » NewOrleansCityPark.com City Park is as magical and unique as the city of New Orleans. The 1,300-acre outdoor oasis has enchanted New Orleanians since 1850, making it one of the nation’s oldest urban parks. Urban Parks are substantial to the general well-being of our communities through direct and indirect health improvement, social cohesion, air quality and carbon offset, water management, and economic success. Each year, the Park garners 16 million visits, where guests can stroll under the historic oaks and picturesque moss canopies. City Park offers something for everyone! Stop and smell the roses in the Botanical Garden. Stroll through the sprawling green space or get active on the park’s biking, jogging, and walking paths. Practice your serve on one of 26 tennis courts or hit the links on City Park’s new 18-hole golf course. The Park is full of places and activities that shape our lives.

Currently the Park generates 91% of its $22 million operating budget through activities in the Park, often weather dependent. Individual giving helps support Park operations: everything from protecting the grand oaks, to planting flowers, maintaining the playgrounds, mowing the grass, and much, much more.
2
With City Park being at the heart of New Orleans, nearly twice the size as Central Park in New York City, and home to the largest collection of Live Oak trees in the world, the advancement of the Park is vital to our region. Take our word for it, there is no better place in New Orleans to learn how to ride a bike, to catch your first bass, or to read a good book underneath City Park’s famous oak trees, some dating back nearly 800 years.

Letter from the Publis her FOR NEARLY FORTY YEARS, Gambit has been telling the stories of New Orleans’ artists, musicians, politicians, restauranteurs and civic leaders, with a commitment to spotlighting the people who make our region unique. From features like 40 under 40, weekly shoutouts in “thumbs up”, fundraiser event listings, to informative cover stories— our commitment to community coverage has also always included the nonprofit community. Gambit’s Annual Guide to Giving (my favorite special section of the year), offers nonprofit organizations the opportunity to tell our readers their stories. This yearbook of do-gooders will tell you who they serve, what they need to continue to operate and how you can get involved. I am grateful to live in New Orleans, a city that has so many nonprofits and people who are willing to give back. I hope that you will learn about a new organization, fundraising event or volunteer opportunity in this guide. Cheers to an inspired, mindful and grateful start to the giving season.

Heartbeat NOLA is a citizen CPR & AED Awareness and Education Program as well as a Fundraising Campaign to place more publically accessible AEDs in the greater New Orleans area. Our Story On Valentine’s Day 2017, our founder and local musician Maurice Trosclair (AKA Miracle Meaux) entered the elevator of his office building after his normal lunchtime run on the levee when he suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. He was the recipient of a near perfect chain of survival: early 911 notification, citizen first responders performing quality CPR, other citizens bringing a publically accessible AED and delivering a shock before EMS arrived. They shocked him 4 more times before transporting him to the hospital. Maurice was released 4 days later neurologically intact. DePaul Community Health Centers’ “Read for Your Health” Program, an initiative of Reach Out and Read®, makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care so that children grow up with books and a love for reading. Through this exciting program, providers “prescribe” age-appropriate books to patients—from infants to age five—during pediatric well-visits, stimulating early brain development and building children’s mental muscles and their reading libraries. Unique: The staff at FHF are all parents or direct care-givers of children or loved ones with disabilities or SHN, or individuals themselves with disabilities or SHN. They are uniquely positioned to increase the confidence in other families through their own personal experiences and knowledge. Families come to us at different times in their child’s life, but they all have one thing in common – they want their child to live the best life they can. Women With a Vision 1226 N. Broad Street » New Orleans, LA 70119
(504) 301-0428
This year, Women With A Vision (WWAV) celebrates 30 years at the intersections of justice, action, and Black feminist struggle. We celebrate 30 years of doing the work. In 1989, WWAV was just an idea thought up by a collective of Black women on a front porch in Central City. Our foremothers envisioned a world in which women had the space and the support needed to come together to realize their hopes and dreams for themselves, their families, and their communities. And they set their hands to making that world a reality. We know how rare it is for organizations founded and led by Black women to make it to this milestone. Our path for getting here was far from easy. Someone once asked me, “Oh, you don’t get tired?” Of course I get tired! But that doesn’t mean I stop. Suppose we had stopped after the man-made disaster following Hurricane Katrina tried to prevent our community from returning to the city of their birth? Suppose we had stopped after a still uninvestigated arson attack tried to squash our work to fight criminalization of Black women’s bodies? If we had stopped, we wouldn’t be celebrating this 30-year anniversary. We wouldn’t be celebrating this amazing work and history of what it means for Black women to live in the vision and the possibilities of who we are. On Friday, December 6, 2019, we will host our 30th Anniversary Celebration and Gala. This night will be a grand celebration of WWAV’s work, by and for the community that has given us life for thirty years. I invite you to participate in this night of celebration by purchasing a ticket to the gala at the cost of $125. You can purchase by using the ticket portal on our Facebook event page or emailing wwavgala@gmail.com.

Through our services, OHL empowers individuals to become active participants in their treatment and recovery to reclaim functional, productive lives. In 2019, OHL opened two new facilities: a 144-bed residential treatment program and a 25-bed Sobering Center. Throughout its multiple programs, OHL provides services to approximately 1,200 people each month.

New Orleans Council on Aging’s (NOCOA) Home Delivered Meals program known as “Meals on Wheels” serves adults aged 60 and older who are “food insecure” in Orleans Parish. “Food insecurity” means individuals don’t have access to enough food for a healthy life. It is a strong predictor of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and can lead to mental health issues in the elderly. There are currently more than 74,000 residents in New Orleans aged 60 and older, and 8% of them, (6,000) are “food insecure.” NOCOA is asking the public’s help in providing more meals. For every $7.00 you donate, a meal will be delivered to a “food insecure” senior. This holiday season please consider feeding “food insecure” elders in the City of New Orleans.

Hilda is looking for stability. She wants to provide her two young children with a home that they won’t have to leave in six months. She wants them to have a yard to play in and rooms where they can study and grow. When you give to New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, your donations empower families just like Hilda’s. When you donate to or shop in the ReStore, a gently used sofa could help fund the fence around Hilda’s yard. When you spend a day volunteering on site, you could be a part of raising the walls of Hilda’s home, framing the rooms her children will sleep in. Hilda is working hard to become a homebuyer, and you gift gives her a hand-up to transform her family’s lives.

In the greater New Orleans area, an estimated 72,000 people, or 12% of all workers, are employed in the hospitality and tourism industry. They are serving both locals and visitors each and every day in our hotels, restaurants and bars. The Louisiana Hospitality Foundation helps these hospitality industry workers with financial assistance for basic living expenses when they are dealing with an emergency outside of their control such as a natural disaster, house fire, medical diagnosis, vehicle accident, or even a death in the family. This grant program provides housing & utility assistance, as well as help with medical bills and funeral expenses. Since the Foundation’s inception in 2006, we have issued over $1.8 million in grants in Louisiana. With your support, we will continue to give a “hand up” to members of our hospitality industry workforce when they need it most!
