Creating OurOwn Perfume “AnAmazing Experience”
By Gina Rossi
Lookingtobeadventurous,my husbandand Ibookedaclass online for amagical mysteryridetothe Tijon Parfumerieinthe French Quarter to signupforthe90-minuteMix&Match perfumecreation experience.
After reading greatreviews but not surewhatweweregettinginto, wewere warmly greetedbyafriendlystaffand awonderful waft of fragrance.
We started by choosing giftsfor our giftbagthataccompaniestheexperience includingasmallbottleofoneofTijon’s
24brandedperfumes. Itwasdifficult,we lovedmanyofTijon’salluringfragrances rangingfromfloraltocitrustooriental to fresh to woodsy to spicy, achoicefor everyone’s olfactory senses.
What makesTijon extraspecial is that they don’tjust crafttheir own blends.Tijon allows guests theunique opportunitytocreate theirveryown custom fragrances in theiron-site laboratory.Reservationsare required.
We were ushered to theperfume organwheretheexplorationofover300 fragrancesandoursenseofsmellbegan. 300oils–wheretobegin?
Don’tworry –BeHappy,the pros at Tijonmadeiteasy,offeringasmuchhelp
as needed.Noexperience is necessary –just bringyournoseand agood sense of adventure. Instructions andideas were presentedfor themakingofour owncreation.
We then enteredthe labitself, were givenlab coatswhich made us look andfeelprofessional, and instructionsonhowtocreateourown. At first it appeared daunting, butthe knowledgeableandfriendlystaffmade iteasy.Infact, thehardestthingturned outtobenamingour fragrances.
We mixeddifferent oils in three beakerstocreatethree different perfumescents. We triedthem on our skinandchoseourfavoriteforbottling We blended theadditionalrequired ingredientsand actually bottledthe perfumesourselves.Ithadallthe“wow” factorIcould’veasked for
Afterconsiderablediscussionwith my husband, Ichose thename“Nola Fleurs”while my husband, typically but lovingly ignoring my input, chose thename“PantyDropper.”
My husband, who reallydidn’t want to do this, had themostfun of all.
Althoughweownourformulas,Tijon keptacopysowecouldordermoreinthe future, whichwe’recertaintodo. After all, we created thesebeautifulscents. Weconcludedbyreceivingacertificate
andour nice gift bagofgoodies valued at $45 andwerethensurprised with a champagnetoast.
We discovered oursense of smell is themostacute of ourfive senses in triggering memory, ofgrandmother’s houseorafirstdate. Meaningwhenever wesmellourbeautifulfragrances,we’ll be reminded of our NewOrleans lab experience.
Whilemakingourperfumewemeta lovelycouplefromChicagowhosimilarly hadafantastictime.Weagreedtomeet for drinks that evening.

All-in-all my husbandand Iagreedit wasthe best activity we’veeverdone, ahighlight of ourventure into the FrenchQuarter with agreat memory that we’llalwaysrecall whenspritzing ourperfumes.
