Easing back-to-school anxiety
BY AMANDA MCELFRESH AMCELFRESH@THEADVOCATE.COM
As thenew school year begins, itisessential to prepareyourchild andgivethem thesupport they needfor asmoothtransitionback to class. Theback-to-schoolseasoncan be stressful formanykids, eveninthe best of times. Parentsshould pay close attentionto theirchild’s mental healthand well-beingand take action if they notice anything abnormal. TheexpertteamatChildren’sHospitalNew Orleans shares thesetipstoreduceback-toschool anxiety, stress andbehavior issues
1) Keep calm.
Parentsneed to lead by example. Slow down andgiveyourfamilyextra time in themorning so youaren’tanxious andrushed. The less rushed achild is in in themorning, the more prepared they will feel forthe day. Teach kids to take deep breathstocalmthemselves.
2) Startahealthy routine.
Anutritiousdiet, exerciseand good sleep areall important. Childrenneed aroutine andaserene, structured schedule. In particular, makesureyour childhas time to eatbreakfast to starttheir long school daywithenergy
3) Keep informed.
Stay up-to-dateonthe COVID-19 virus and school maskingpolicies. Consult trustedhealth
organizationsand your localschooldistrictfor informationonillnessoutbreaks, precautions andmore. Don’t rely on social mediaalone.
4) Be sensitive andkeep kids in theknow.
Talk with your child andbetuned in to their thoughts, concernsand feelings. Answertheir questions. Kids should know what youknowso thereare no surprisesthatcan causefrustration.
5) Stay flexible. Avoidrigidity. Be awareofyourchild’s expectations andpossibleanxieties about starting anew school year andbewilingto adjust as needed.
6) Talk with theteacher. Communicating withyourchild’s teacheris important year-round.Discuss anyparticular needsand concerns, aswellasstudent performance andbehavior in class
7) Look forwarning signs. If your child’s mood or behavior changes, or theirsleepingand eating schedule is off, talk it over.Seek professional help if necessary.
Children’s HospitalNew Orleans hasnumerous freeresources forparents at chnola.org. Youcan also findaprovider andmakean appointment if your childhas medicalneeds.

Animal of theMonth:African penguinsdelight Audubon Aquarium visitors with quirks and charms
BY AMANDA MCELFRESH, AMCELFRESH@THEADVOCATE.COM
This article is broughttoyou by Audubon Nature Institute.
In theirtime at an Audubon Aquarium, the21Africanpenguins whocallit home have becomevisitorfavorites
Thepenguinsrange in agefrom six monthstomorethan 30 years. Some were born in New Orleans andothers arrivedfrom accreditedinstitutions across theUnitedStates. Thejuveniles arecharcoal gray, males have blue ipper tags on theright, and females have redipper tags on thele. And, while theirwaddling stepsmay look awkwardonland, thepenguins thrive beneath thewater, where they use theirwings as ippersand feet as rudders, giving them speedand agility. Bill Robles, curatorofbirds and mammals at AudubonNature Institute, spokeaboutthe penguins’ characteristics, daily lives, and howAudubon is helpingprotect them in thewild.
Howwould youdescribethe penguins’personalities?
They’redenitely different and distinct. Some areveryfriendly, especially some of theyoungeronesthatwill tryto huddle up near youorcuddle underyour legs.Othersare like acat youhaveathome–theyprefer to do theirown thing and onlycome around when it’s feeding time
What do thepenguins’ diets look like?
We feed them twice aday, every day. They eatsh.Weserve them avariety, including herring and trout, among
others. The amount changesthroughoutthe year.During some months, they eatabout13pounds of shaday, butwhentheygointomolting, they eat20to22pounds of sh eachday
Tell us more aboutthe molting process forthe penguins. Africanpenguins moltonceayear. This is wheretheyreplaceall of their old featherswithnew feathers in ordertomaintain theirwaterproofcoats forthe winter.Onaverage, it takessix to 11 days. During that time, theywill stop eating and goingintothe water. Before that, theyeat morethan they usually do in ordertotakeinmore caloriesand slowtheir bodies down Here in New Orleans, about90% of the penguins go throughmolting in June, July and August.
What kind of enrichment activities does theAudubon staff take partinwith thepenguins?
Oneofthe main things we do is scale training, wherewegivethemascale and encouragethemto hop on topofittoget theirweightvoluntarily rather than usingacrate We’llalsogivethemice pilestopick up and run away with, and sometimesweadd ice to the pool forthemtoplaywith as well.Theylovetoplay and carryaroundthings likecar wash strips, dive toys anddiverings Thosemimicitems that they would encounterin thewild, sointeracting with them comesnaturally to them
What is thestatus of Africanpenguins in the wild and what is Audubon doing to helpthe species?
Ithinkit’saboutbeing introduced to a speciesthattheywill probablynever seeinthe wild.People also love to seethemwalkaroundand respondto them. They’re always doing something funorinteresting.
What kindofhabitat does Audubon provide for thepenguins?
To setthemupfor success, we have them living in ahabitat that stays 60 degrees pretty much 24/7,pluswater that is 55 degrees. We’ve foundthat’s very comfortable forthem. We also matchthe light cycle here in New Orleans to thetiming of what they would experience in thewild.
They are themostendangeredpenguins in theworld.HereatAudubon, we participateinthe AfricanPenguin Species Survival Program, which is a breeding programtopromote genetic sustainability.Wewerealsoone of theoriginal aquariumsinvolvedin anational programtosave African penguins from extinction, and we contribute to conservation funds to help thoseefforts.
What do visitors enjoymost aboutseeingthe penguins at Audubon?
They have always been afan favorite.
