A MESSAGE THE CEO from
Dear Friends of New Orleans & Company,
Did you know …. According to the US Travel Association, direct travel spending in the United States totaled $1.2 trillion in 2022, which produced an economic impact of $2.6 trillion—a return to 2019 (pre-COVID) levels. Travel directly employed eight million Americans and supported nearly 15 million jobs. However, while impressive, these numbers should be even higher. When adjusted for inflation, total travel spending has only recovered to 86% of pre-pandemic levels. Direct travel jobs are still one million short of what they totaled in 2019.
In New Orleans, nothing fuels our economy more than the travel industry. Taxes generated by the travel industry account for roughly 40 percent of the city’s operating budget. More than 75,000 New Orleanians work in the travel industry, which offers jobs to a diverse group of workers with a variety of educational and training backgrounds and life experiences. Meaningful, lifelong careers are found in the travel industry, from entry level jobs to senior leadership positions in businesses across the region.
Culturally, travel brings people together to make memories, to do business, to knock down barriers and to expand horizons. When the travel industry thrives, so do our communities.
Enjoy this issue about the revitalization of the riverfront, which is exciting for our residents as well as visitors. Other good news includes:
» The inaugural Pickelball Fest, a new annual event benefiting the Brees Dream Foundation, will be held August 10-13 at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
» The August COOLinary restaurant promotion, now in its 19th year, offers pre-fix menus at more than 70 restaurants in multiple neighborhoods. It’s a great opportunity to try a new restaurant or book a staycation.
» August is Museum Month, which offers museum members the opportunity to use their membership to allow two people admission to all other participating institutions, free of charge, until August 31.
» Our partners at Disney released the film Haunted Mansion, which is set in New Orleans. It is huge for us to align with an iconic brand such as Disney and have New Orleans culture on display in such a powerful way. We believe the film, as well as the upcoming attraction Princess Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland and Disney World will translate into future visitation and strengthen the New Orleans brand globally.
» The inaugural Sugar Bowl Country Kickoff presented by the Louisiana Office of Tourism in partnership with the Sugar Bowl Committee and New Orleans & Company, will be held September 2 at the Caesars Superdome with headliner Garth Brooks! The music and entertainment event will celebrate the start of the 2023 college football season.
» Labor Day Weekend also brings Southern Decadence Fest, which has reinforced for decades that everyone is welcome here.
We will have much more to come in our October issue. As we enter the fall, the team at New Orleans & Company will continue to diligently sell and market our beloved city, bring visitors and major events and show why Tourism Matters and how travel fuels our economy! Thanks for your partnership.
Sincerely,
Walter J. Leger III President & CEO New Orleans & Company

The Exchange Pickleball + Bar
By Kelly Schulz
PICKLEBALL is the fastest growing sport in America. Now you can pack your paddle when you head to New Orleans, the home to The Exchange Pickleball + Bar, the only dedicated pickleball facility in the Gulf South to combine air-conditioned indoor courts, an outdoor court, food, drinks and live music.
Attorney / Entrepreneur
Renée Melchiode has worked for two years on this labor of love, which opens August 1.
It’s just in time for August 8 – National Pickleball Day – and the inaugural NOLA Pickleball Fest August 1013, a partnership of New Orleans & Company, the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, and the leadership of Brittany and Drew Brees and the Brees Dream Foundation.
Located in the Lower Garden District, Renée says the Exchange caters to locals as well as business travelers, conventioneers
and leisure visitors. They already have group bookings through November for private events which can include a professional pickleball pro to enhance the experience. Memberships are available to accommodate locals and frequent visitors alike. Pickleball offers many physical and mental health benefits, including increasing longevity, weight loss and reducing loneliness, according to various medical studies. It’s also an inclusive sport. Grandparents play with their grandchildren.
With low-cost barriers to entry and relative ease of learning, people of varying skills can quickly become proficient. It is also a great way to meet new people. It’s like speed dating with a paddle in hand.
As a woman-owned business, the Exchange is a place where everyone can feel safe venturing out on their own, or coming with a group of friends, Renee says. She is one of a growing number of women entrepreneurs to open pickleball businesses across America.
Pickleball has been around since the late 1960’s but has exploded in popularity since COVID when people re-discovered the sport during lockdown.
“New Orleans needs this,” says Renee. “Pickleball brings hope and positivity in trying times. It gets people off their phones and connects them in a meaningful way. We could all use a little more connectivity right now.”

Spotlight GETTING N.O. to Colton Clifford
Social Media Content Creator
Why did you choose New Orleans for your career?
Growing up in Houston was such a unique experience because I had the chance to witness first-hand the incredible resilience and vibrant spirit of the New Orleans families who made our city their new home after Hurricane Katrina. It was truly inspiring to see how they brought their culture and charm with them, infusing our community with a fresh sense of life and energy. From that point on, my fascination with New Orleans grew stronger. I couldn’t help but be drawn to its rich heritage, lively traditions, and the infectious spirit that seems to radiate from every corner. Being able to witness their unwavering energy while I was in junior high had a profound impact on me, and it taught me the importance of celebrating life and embracing the unique beauty that can be found in every culture.
After graduating with a degree in photography
from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit, I drove to the most interesting (and the warmest) place I could think of – New Orleansand began a career in the arts. Among other roles, I worked as a gallery manager and handled social media for a gallery on Royal Street prior to joining New Orleans & Company in 2022.
What is a Social Media Content Creator?
Some people hear that title and think I just sit around posting on Instagram all day, but it’s much more than that. We take everything that makes New Orleans special and amplify it to the community and those who come to experience it. Content creation is storytelling … stories about what makes our cuisine top notch, what makes our people so special, what makes our traditions so sacred. We make sure our culture bearers are heard and represented. I learn something new every day by providing our visitors with an insider’s guide to exploring and celebrating this city.
What career advice would you give to aspiring content creators? Forget all the rules. I thought working in marketing, social and editorial were outside of my reach because I wanted to be an artist. But creativity, having a voice, and being an inclusive thinker matters in any career. Education is important, but so is knowing what values you can bring to a team. Even if you face rejections, it’s crucial to push forward and keep applying until you find the right fit for you. Most importantly, stick by values that are important to you and trust your instinct.
What do you love about New Orleans?
I love living here because I can truly be myself without worrying about fitting into a certain mindset. In my free time, I immerse myself in the world of burlesque and drag through performing, photographing, and illustrating it. Through these art forms, I get to celebrate life with my chosen family and community. New Orleans holds a unique magic that is hard to find in other cities, which is why artists thrive here. The welcoming and accepting nature of the people, combined with the city’s vibrant creative energy, pulls you in and allows you to fully express yourself.

REDEVELOPING The Riverfront
BY CAL PALERMO
Because of the Mississippi River’s importance to New Orleans economy and trade throughout our city’s history, the New Orleans Riverfront has long been the first impression of the city for visitors. With that being said, the riverfront has begun a large-scale redevelopment with several independent projects underway including The River District Neighborhood as well as the newly renovated Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium. These projects will help better connect our residents to this powerful river at the same time enhancing visitor experiences.
“The Riverfront redevelopment marks one of the largest redevelopment projects since the Warehouse District revitalization prior to the World’s Fair in 1984,” said Walter J. Leger, III, President and CEO of New Orleans & Company.
“The commitment of multiple entities to revitalizing the riverfront adds to the billions of dollars of investment in our city, which is great news for all those who choose New Orleans as a place to live, work and visit.”
The River District Neighborhood
The River District will revitalize nearly 40 acres of vacant land along the Mississippi River near the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and Mardi Gras World as an energetic hub of commerce, trade, culture, history and community. Described as a neighborhood for all, the development will include pedestrian-oriented streetscapes, a variety of green spaces, retail locations, restaurants, entertainment venues and residential housing.
“Our transformative project, the River District, embraces a bold vision of New Orleans rising along the banks of the Mississippi River in a one-of-a-kind development. This project will bring people, culture and commerce together in a uniquely New Orleans, mixeduse neighborhood that will boast a number of public benefits including parks and greenspaces,
entertainment and affordable housing so people can live near where they work,” said Louis Lauricella, Co-Managing Member of River District Neighborhood Investors, LLC.
The River District project has broken ground and is expected to be completed in the next seven to ten years.

Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium Renovation
The Audubon Nature Institute completed its renovation of the Audubon Aquarium of Americas and Insectarium when it reopened on World Ocean’s Day in June. The $41 million project was the biggest renovation of the Aquarium since it opened on Canal Street in 1990 and made the Audubon campus the only aquarium/insectarium under one roof in the world.
“The opening of the newly renovated Audubon Aquarium and the new Audubon Insectarium are key elements in the re-envisioning of the Mississippi Riverfront at Canal Street,” said Ron Forman, Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO. “We are proud to be part of this monumental transformation
Other Riverfront Redevelopment News
of the Riverfront. The family attractions and the renovations in Woldenberg Park complement other projects at Canal Street to bring a dynamic new look to our Riverfront.”
The Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium has welcomed more than 140,000 guests since reopening in early June.
Near the Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium at the foot of both Canal and Poydras Streets, Caesars Entertainment, Inc. is investing $325 million to renovate and rebrand Harrah’s Hotel and Casino with additional plans for a 340-room hotel tower by 2024. The Harrah’s Casino rebrand follows the renovation of the former World Trade Center into the renowned Four Seasons Hotel in 2021. On top of the Four Seasons Hotel, the stunning Vue Orleans offers the city’s only 360-degree panoramic viewing platform and takes visitors on a journey of our city’s history with interactive cultural experiences. Furthermore, the Spanish Plaza and The Riverwalk Outlets will undergo a threeyear revitalization project after being acquired by RockStep Capital, a national retail investment firm.
New Orleans & Company will continue to support redevelopment projects throughout our city and are excited to see the continued evolution of our attractions and landmarks.

BEYOND BEADS the
New Orleans Museum Month
BY RHONDA COOK
Whether you are a history buff or an art or culinary lover, New Orleans’ museums play a huge role in helping us understand the past and the impact it has on the present and the future.
Not only do museums educate and inspire people of all ages, they provide opportunities for learning, discovery, curiosity and creativity.
This month, locals can beat the heat and experience the cool things that our museums have to offer during the ninth annual New Orleans Museum Month. It’s a collaboration between museums of all sizes and genres across the greater New Orleans area offering locals the ability to experience the wealth of art and culture available in the city.
During the month of August, if you purchase a membership at a participating museum, you then can get up to two tickets to other participating museums free of charge. It is a great way to support our local museums during what is typically a slower season for them.
This year nearly two dozen museums will take part, including The National World
