Welcome to the re-launch of Tourism Matters, a partnership between Gambit and New Orleans & Company to showcase to you, our fellow citizens of the New Orleans region, the many good things happening in our tourism industry and cultural Publishedeconomy.quarterly, Tourism Matters will give you a behind-the-scenes look at our region’s most important industry, as well as the people of New Orleans & Company, and our partners, who drive it.
Tourism does not just happen. People do not show up here because “it’s New Orleans.” Today, visitors, event organizers and meeting attendees have many choices in a destination, especially coming out of a pandemic. It takes hard work and savvy marketing, selling, relationship-building and negotiating in a highly competitive global environment to convince them to choose New Orleans, and then choose to return again and again. That’s where we come in. Since 1960, New Orleans & Company has been working to celebrate the richness of our culture while driving the economy, creating jobs and building careers (see cover story on page 5). Think about this … without the millions of visitors who come to New Orleans each year, our city of 391,000 people would not sustain the phenomenal restaurants, museums, festivals and cultural attractions that we are fortunate to enjoy. So far, 2022 is off to a great start. We kicked off with the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Mardi Gras and the NCAA Men’s Final Four. Then we moved into Zurich Classic, Navy Week, French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest. This summer, we hosted the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience, the Essence Festival of Culture, Tales of the Cocktail, Satchmo Summer Fest and more. Major conventions have returned to the city as well. Did you know that we hosted the largest gathering of cancer researchers anywhere in the world since COVID? The American Association for Cancer Research chose New Orleans for its annual meeting in April 2022, reinforcing the caliber of thought-leaders and titans of industry that we draw here for conventions. This fall brings more major conventions and festivals (see pages 11-15), the Allstate Kickoff Classic featuring LSU v Florida State, the second annual NOLAxNOLA music festival (see page 8), and much more. Everyone at New Orleans & Company is working hard to ensure the success of these events and help local businesses thrive in 2023 and beyond. Through this publication you will get to know some phenomenal culture bearers and good news about resurgence of this industry. Do we have our share of challenges as a city? Sure. But the New Orleans & Company team and I are optimistic about Thanksthe future.for reading Tourism Matters. We’ll see you around New Orleans this fall.
Sincerely, Dear Friends of New Orleans Culture, Stephen NewPresidentPerryandCEOOrleans&Company

T here is a familiar compli mentary description of a person … “never met a stranger” … And it is a phrase that so aptly applies to Kevin Ferguson, Vice President of External Affairs & Membership for New Orleans & Company. Leading a team of four, his department is responsible for membership strategies, commu nity partnerships, community engagement and interfacing with cultural entities across the region. Prior to joining the team at New Orleans & Company, Kevin worked for the New Orleans Pelicans and New Orleans Saints since 2010 as new business development execu tive, service and retention account executive and senior manager of premium accounts, managing an account base of more than $6 million in sales annually with the Pelicans and Saints franchises. Earlier in his career, he served as group sales account executive with the New Orleans Zephyrs and worked in restaurant manage ment. Through his various posi tions in the sports industry, he has led the charge in business develop ment, retention strategies and salesSomeinitiatives.maywonder why he would leave a professional sports orga nization involved in two of the world’s premiere leagues, the NFL and the NBA, what many would consider a dream job. For Kevin, the answer lies in one word – Com munity. This is a community Kevin deeply cares about and has deep roots in from his earliest years.
“We are committed to improv ing our outreach to and relation ship with our community, and we believe Kevin has the skills and experience to be very successful in this effort,” says Stephen Perry, President and CEO of New Orleans & Company.Kevinhas wasted no time since joining the team in January, meeting with members across all sectors and sizes, already deepening the depth and reach of New Orleans & Company. As the organization, the community and the world rise from the lockdowns and restrictions of the pandemic, his team is increasing member outreach and events to connect the people who make the hospi tality industry the vital economic engine it is for the city, region, and state of Louisiana. His first-year goal is to elevate the way people think about and perceive New Orleans & Company, an organization he says so care fully and nimbly pivoted to serve the community and its customer base through the challenging shutdowns of the hospitality industry because of the world wide pandemic.“Whatmanypeople do not understand is just how many opportunities there are in hos pitality across a wide variety of levels,” says Kevin. “I know per sonally having started where I did personally to pay the bills. There is so much our industry offers to people.”Andfive years down the road? “I hope we will be able to in crease the community’s apprecia tion of and acknowledge the value of New Orleans & Company to ev eryone who lives, works and visits here,” says Kevin, adding, “In stead of being about destination marketing, we are about destina tion management. I hope people understand just how deeply we engage in issues that matter to all of us, including public safety, economic development, growth, and simply stated making our city better. That is New Orleans & Company and it is an honor to join this talented team that supports such a vital industry for our city.”

Travel and tourism at its core is about enriching the lives of people. The family vacation is an American institution, which educates chil dren and creates lasting memories. Travel and time off reduce stress for hard-working people, improves rela tionships and rejuvenates romance. This powerful industry is fueled by leisure travelers, convention and meeting attendees and sports enthu siasts who are drawn to the lure of a destination, where to go, things to do and what to eat. Travelers to New Orleans and the surrounding region take with them memories of a truly authentic destination that can not be duplicat ed in any other American city. We like to call New Orleans the Cultural Capital of the South.
Now more than ever, travel is helping enrich lives, drive the economy, unite people in divisive times, and provide lifelong career opportunities.

It’s a common misperception that tourism jobs provide no opportunity for advancement. The travel industry encompasses many professions and provides lifelong careers. It is the people of our industry that deliver daily the legendary customer service and authentic hospitality we are known for worldwide. The tourism industry includes jobs from many professions and skillsets. Employers today are eager to rebuild their workforce and are offering competitive wages, benefit packages and in some cases, sign-on bonuses.
When visitors come to New Orleans and stay in hotels, less than one percent (.97%) of their 14.45% sales tax is reinvested into New Orleans & Company to sell and promote New Orleans to potential visitors. Of the remainder, portions are dedicated to critical tourism infrastructure like the Superdome and the Morial Convention Center with the rest supporting public education, public safety, infrastructure, public transit and other key municipal functions.
PEOPLEUNITING Mark Twain once said, “Travel is fatal to bigotry, prejudice and narrow-mindedness.” In today’s political climate with so many differing opinions, people coming together is critical to the human condition. Travel unites and is a tool for understanding and empathy towards others. It should never be used as a tool of further division through boycotts or travel bans. We pride ourselves on being a global meetings city, where people come together to exchange ideas, discuss differing viewpoints and knock down barriers, all while enjoying our spectacular venues and unique culture. In divisive times, travel can unite us.

Showcasing the Music O ne of New Orleans’ newest music festivals is back for a second year. NOLAxNOLA will take place September 23 – October 9, 2022. Building on the success of last year’s festival, which included dozens of sold-out performances, the festival will once again promote New Orleans’ deep inventory of music options and concerts, and showcase the worldclass artists, musicians and legendary venues that comprise the musical landscape of the city. NOLAxNOLA was born when the Jazz and Heritage Fes tival was cancelled for October 2021, because of the pandemic. It was such a success that New Orleans & Company is helping to bring it back and making it an annual tradition. The festival is also possible due to a partnership with the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund whose economic infusion pro gram will provide financial support to local venues and musicians.

NOLAxNOLA was born out of the need to support New Orleans music culture in the wake of the ongoing pandemic and Hurricane Ida. The event provides not only an eco nomic boost for music venues, but also gives performers across the city an op portunity to showcase their talents and get back to doing what they love. “New Orleans has so many talented artists –who wouldn’t want to come check out as many shows as they can at one time. I’m excited to be in that number,” said New Orleans singer Robin Barnes.
“For us this is granular and groundbreaking and will once again drive people to the music clubs and venues and deliver that part of New Orleans that exists nowhere but here,” added Perry. For more information and to sign up for updates for this year’s event, visit www.nolaxnola.com.
In its inaugural year, 35 venues from nearly every neighborhood in the city participated over a span of two weeks, including Tipitina’s, Preservation Hall, The Howlin’ Wolf, d.b.a., Kermit Ruffins’ Mother In Law Lounge, The Maple Leaf, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, Buffas, the Saturn Bar, Three Keys, Gasa Gasa and Cafe Istanbul. In total there were more than 300 shows over 10 days last October.
NEW ORLEANS & COMPANY | SEPT 2022 09 deserve a rich array of music, and along with the return of the music festivals that fill our dynamic event calendar, we believe it is vital to continue this new unique musical tradition, perhaps the only one like it anywhere.”
“It was a call for New Orleanians to help New Orleanians, something that no other community does better. Stephen Perry and the team at New Orleans & Company immediately embraced our vision and provided the support and resources that made it a reality. We are excited and hon ored that NOLAxNOLA has become a New Orleans tradition.” said Sig Greenbaum, Founder and CEO, Sigfest Events, and a principal with 3090x3090 LLC.
