program includes parenting education and resources for moms, dads and grandparents through phone consultations, on-site classes and community programs. There’s also a play space designed to safely occupy babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers while their parents seek guidance from pediatricians and in-house specialists. Children’s Hospital has provided full-service pediatric care for more than 60 years and uses advanced pediatric medical practices to serve patients from primary to emergency care, cardiothoracic surgery and oncology. The comprehensive medical center includes more than 40 specialties and 400 specialists and is one of the only full-service hospitals exclusively for children in the Gulf South. Children’s Hospital After Hours provides speedy care for children from birth to 21 years old, when other hospitals and clinics are closed. No appointments are necessary, and the hospital treats injuries and common childhood illnesses. The clinic is open from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, 1 p.m. to midnight Saturday and 9 a.m. to midnight Sunday. Touro’s Family Birthing Center calls itself “the place where babies come from,” and backed that up in 2014 by delivering more than 3,300 babies (Touro says only one other hospital in the state delivered more last year). In addition to labor, delivery and postpartum care, the birthing center offers a comprehensive and customized approach to preparing mothers for birth. The facility offers labor and birthing classes and can accommodate a range of preferences, including water births or midwife assistance. University Medical Center of New Orleans is the flagship academic medical center of LCMC Health and is set to open this summer. The full-service hospital will focus on providing compassionate health care to a range of patients in the region and will use the latest technology and research to provide safe, comfortable care for injuries, diseases and other conditions. The hospital has a wide variety of specialties to address a full range of health issues. A subsidiary of Touro Infirmary, Crescent City Physicians has been part of the PAGE 6

ambit’s 17th Annual Wellness Expo at Lakeside Shopping Center will have dozens of exhibitors offering information, screenings and advice for visitors of all ages, shapes and sizes. The expo takes place June 6 and will last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so there’s plenty of time to take preventative health screenings and gather the latest information about nutrition, exercise, beauty, children’s health, care for the elderly and even alternative energy. (See a list of exhibitors and what they are offering on p. 10.) The expo is sponsored in part by LCMC Health — the health network that includes Touro Infirmary and a host of other health care facilities in and around New Orleans — Evamor Alkaline Artesian Water, Dr. Kelly Burkenstock, Louisiana Pain Specialist, M Fit Studio, Lambeth House and Title Boxing Club. There will be a lineup of demonstrations and presentations at Center Stage (see p. 15 for a schedule), including Zumba, a talk about DNA and weight loss, self-defense techniques, gaming and more. Participants include Louisiana-based LCMC Health, a nonprofit health care system founded in 2009 and focusing on the Gulf Coast. It operates Children’s Hospital, Touro Infirmary, New Orleans East Hospital, Interim LSU Hospital and University Medical Center New Orleans and plans to bring West Jefferson Medical Center under its umbrella in the coming months. With more than 6,100 employees, 166,000 annual emergency department visits and 486,694 annual clinic visits, the hospitals that make up LCMC Health play an important role in keeping the communities they serve healthy. The institutions also participate in advanced research, economic development and clinical excellence initiatives. LCMC physician offices are located throughout Orleans and Jefferson parishes and offer a full range of health care services. Touro Infirmary is a community and faith-based nonprofit hospital that provides care for patients in all stages of life. For 160 years Touro has provided advanced health care to New Orleans, and it was among the first hospitals in the U.S. to establish a physical therapy department. The hospital provides emergency care, imaging services and more. Touro’s Woldenburg Village offers a variety of retirement living choices, including independent living with spacious and comfortable apartments, assisted living for people who need support services and a nursing home for patients who need skilled nursing care. Woldenburg Village also provides transportation for errands, cultural and social outings and medical appointments. The facility also has a beauty parlor, dining room and more. The Parenting Center at Children’s Hospital aims to ease the challenges of raising children by teaching parents how to handle the many issues that arise. The

Greater New Orleans community since 1994. With nearly 50 physicians, the medical network provides primary care, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, cardiology and urology services to patients across Orleans and Jefferson parishes. Dr. Kelly Burkenstock, an internal medicine specialist, believes good skin care and a healthy lifestyle delay the effects of aging. At her medical practice Skin Body Health in Mandeville and Metairie, Burkenstock focuses on anti-aging regimens and state-of-the-art skin rejuvenation techniques. Burkenstock says her goal is to help her patients achieve healthy, clear skin and good health for life — starting at any age. Her specialties include weight loss, nutritional counseling, bio-identical hormone therapy and management of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and menopause. The physician also treats unsightly leg veins, makes scars less noticeable and removes unwanted hair and tattoos. Burkenstock has created a line of skin care products that are available at her offices and also offers Botox, fillers and laser, anti-aging and cosmetic procedures, including radio frequency and needling. She is scheduled to speak at the expo at noon. An accurate diagnosis is crucial to providing the best relief for patients suffering pain, and it’s the first step for doctors at Louisiana Pain Specialist. In addition to treating the physical ailment, doctors also address accompanying issues such as depression, lack of

concentration and other ways in which debilitating pain can affect a person’s life. The practice offers safe, minimally invasive therapies and welcomes patients who have experienced unsuccessful treatments and have conditions including failed back surgery syndrome, post-herpetic neuralgia, refractory back pain, multi-factorial neck pain and others. Physicians use a multidisciplinary approach and balance appropriate medications with interventions. There are five locations across the Greater New Orleans area. M Fit Studio provides small-group TRX suspension training, Kettlebell Foundations and Healthkick classes inside a well-lit, full-service studio in New Orleans. TRX suspension training includes an all-in-one motion, combining strength and flexibility for getting in shape or staying fit. Suspension training uses a person’s weight at different angles to engage muscle groups. In addition to group classes, M Fit offers personal training that begins with a fitness test, a physiology assessment and monitoring. The studio also offers yoga and meditation classes. Health experts will be on hand at the booth with nutrition tips and information about how to get and stay healthy. Sometimes it feels good to release a little aggression, and the Metairie-based Title Boxing Club invites you to do just that — and get fit in the process. The club offers hourlong, high-energy, trainer-led total body workout classes using boxing and kickboxing techniques. A Power Hour class offers an explosive total

body fitness workout that helps practitioners burn fat and lose weight. The club also offers a 30-minute Calorie Crusher Class. Trainers are skilled in mixed marital arts and will show participants how to do everything, from wrapping their hands to punching bags. The club is for people of all fitness and experience levels. Membership plans are available, but the club also allows drop-ins. Pick up a free workout pass at the group’s expo booth. Bottles of Evamor artesian bottled water have become a common sight in Louisiana. The alkaline water is drawn from a protected aquifer and bottled in Covington. Evamor credits its water’s neutral, clean taste to its high (alkaline) pH levels. According to the company’s website, alkalinity helps regulate the body’s acidity, fights the production of body fat, prevents fatigue and protects bones. The water also can help relieve acid reflux and ease digestive woes. Evamor is filtered through stone underground and is monitored for quality and pH levels. The company adds nothing to the water before bottling it in BPA-free, recyclable bottles. Lambeth House is a nonprofit retirement community and continuing care facility that emphasizes a holistic approach that includes caring for the mind, body and spirit while also offering a worry-free lifestyle and health care. Since 1998, Lambeth House has provided a safe,

supportive and caring environment with services tailored to the needs of individual residents. The community offers different levels of care, including independent living, assisted living, nursing care and memory care. It also provides dining, transportation, education, housekeeping, socialization, estate protection, on-site therapies and social services. A wellness center provides residents with an art studio, indoor pool, fitness rooms, exercise programs, a spa, meditation rooms, an outdoor area and a cafe. Pounding down

When it comes to weight loss, how much does diet matter? By Laura Ricks and if people find it easier to eat less than exercise, why are 69 percent of Americans overweight and/or obese? Because it’s not quite that simple. Church says people need to look at weight from three perspectives: PREVENTION OF WEIGHT GAIN. “If you are a normal weight, you need to keep exercising throughout your life to maintain that weight.”

WEIGHT LOSS. “Here’s where diet rules the day.”

3

WEIGHT LOSS MAINTENANCE. “After you lose the weight, exercising will keep it off.”

Shilstone takes the question of weight even further. “If you look at diet alone, you can lose weight,” Shilstone said, “But depending on your age and your situation, what are we defining as weight? What five pounds did you lose? Fat? Water? Muscle?” Citing post-menopausal women, who traditionally have problems with sudden weight gain, Shilstone says, “I have seen women who have been dieting for years — and training their body for storing fat. They would even be losing weight, but still storing fat and losing muscle.” Over the years, those observations and questions led Shilstone to use a “DEXA scan.” This dual X-ray technology is traditionally used to measure bone density, but Shilstone uses it to look at bone, muscle and fat mass to better un-

derstand people’s body compositions and from there, their REE. The information Shilstone gets from the DEXA scan helps him determine the best diet and exercise regimen to help clients lose weight, maximize potential and be healthy. When it comes to diet and exercise, people should keep a few other things in mind. Americans didn’t get fat overnight because of a sudden attack of gluttony. For most of human history, food has been difficult to obtain, and we are designed to store fat to last us through lean times. When there aren’t any lean times, we just keep adding on. We’re also more sedentary, so people have to make the effort to do the 150 minutes of moderate activity a week that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends to stay healthy, which amounts to about 7,000 or 8,000 steps a day. (Shooting for the popular “10,000 steps” is even better.) Be aware that broad forces are working against us. Poor agricultural policies and junk food engineered to be addictive are only some of the systemic issues we now face. Shilstone says the low-fat craze didn’t help. “We replaced fat with sodium and sugar and that catapulted us into the major problems we have now,” he says. Portion sizes too have ballooned over the last few decades. Finally, there are the mind games we play with ourselves. “We are absolutely horrible at estimating calories [we eat],” Church says. “And we tend to overestimate how many calories we burn.”

ver since American waistlines started rapidly expanding approximately 40 years ago, the question has been, “What’s the best way to lose weight? Diet or exercise?” Health experts always say “diet and exercise.” But in spite of hearing this advice over and over again, we live in a world that wants black-andwhite answers. And in the case of weight loss specifically, science does seem to have given us a simple answer: diet is the way to lose weight. “It’s easier to eat 500 calories less a day than exercise enough to burn up 500 calories,” says Dr. Tim Church, professor of Preventative Medicine at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Numerous studies back up that finding and reputable health organizations now state it, including Mayo Clinic, which says on its website, “Cutting calories through dietary changes seems to promote weight loss more effectively than does exercise and physical activity.” Why is that? Most of the calories we expend each day are what we use to stay alive. That energy is known as our “resting energy expenditure,” or REE. Mackie Shilstone, a New Orleans fitness expert and sports performance manager who has worked with everyone from Peyton Manning and Serena Williams to non-athletes, says REE accounts for 65 percent of the calories we burn in a day. He also says metabolic rates don’t differ as much between less active and more active people as was once thought. That is what leads Church to say, “Ninety-nine percent of the benefits of exercise are not related to weight. We get weight-obsessed.” But if it’s really just a matter of eating less,
