F airytale rise of jockey
Lyle Hewitson Lyle Hewitson has defied the odds in his short career as an apprentice jockey. His dream to ride professionally began in the humble position of a work rider during his high school years. Before he knew it, his hard work paid off and he was accepted at the South African Jockey Academy at the beginning of the year. While most apprentice jockeys take over a year to receive their licence to race, Lyle received his in only three months. After riding his first winner in March, his pursuit of a career as a professional jockey has been made clear. Game On Magazine reveals the fairytale rise of this pocket rocket, whose future looks bright as he gains experience well beyond his years.

to compete in Rio as brothers
The Road to Rio for the South African men’s four crew has by no means been smooth sailing. In the World Rowing Championship in France last year the team narrowly missed out on qualification, while four other South African boats went on to secure their spot at the Games. With only two spots up for grabs in the final Olympic qualification regatta in Switzerland this year, the team had no choice but to shake off last year’s disappointment and grab their final Olympic hope with boldness. They went on to earn their place as the fifth boat that will represent South Africa in Rio next month. Game On Magazine reveals the story of members Vince Breet, Jake Green and David Hunt who have moved beyond being team mates through this victorious journey, and have formed a brotherhood instead. 18

There are very few weekends in South Africa where stadiums across the country are empty because South Africans are passionate sport lovers and flock to watch their favourite sports teams or athletes like bees to honey.
They can recite the athlete’s life story as if they were living in their shoes but how many South Africans know what goes on behind the scenes to get their teams or athletes fit and ready for competitive sport. Game On Magazine takes you behind the scenes with Lee-Anne Diab, sports scientist at the Vodacom Bulls, to find out what it is that she does.

#FootyTwitter5aSide From Tweets to the Streets
Game On Magazine had the pleasure of hanging out at the #FootyTwitter5aSide tournament on 11 June 2016. The whole idea behind the tournament was to get the keyboard warriors, always throwing criticism at the game of football and its numerous teams and players, off the couch and on to the field.
We caught up with Kagiso Modise, the organiser and co-founder of the tournament, to find out more about where the idea came from and what they are looking to do with this concept going forward.
We also managed to chat to a sponsor and one of the players to get their perspective on the whole event.

Martin Dreyer, or Dusi Duke as he’s affectionately known, is one of South Africa’s most decorated canoeists. He won the infamous Dusi Marathon seven times and is the K2 record holder. Since his retirement, he started the “Change a Life” Academy to identify and groom South Africa’s black canoeists, a sport that traditionally is not considered by the black community. Game On Magazine chatted to the canoeing legend to give you a unique behind-the-scenes look into his academy.

The 33-year-old Gordon Gilbert was a professional footballer, playing as a defender, for 14 years. He plied his trade in Scotland initially with clubs like St. Johnston and East Fife before moving to South Africa where he played for the likes of the University of Pretoria, Black Aces, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows. He was born in South Africa, but moved to Scotland with his family at a young age where he made his name in football. Upon retiring from professional football roughly four years ago due to injury, the hardworking defender took up mountain biking.
He took to the sport like a duck to water and quickly became pro after impressing all in his first Absa Cape Epic where he finished amongst the professionals as an amateur at the time. Gordon admits he was extremely disappointed at the time when he waved goodbye to his first love in football, but has described his new passion in mountain biking as a saviour. “I would have gone mad if I didn’t start mountain biking, but my first love will always be football,” says Gordon, who also has another passion - Rhino Conservation where he is heavily involved in trying to help the wildlife of South Africa.
Football • Played for the South African National Development Team against Botswana in 2008 • Reaching the Nedbank Cup final with MP Black Aces in 2008 and did not concede any goals as part of the defence • Represented Kaizer Chiefs and won the Mpumalanga International Cup and the MTN8 Cup in 2008 • Awarded the ‘man of the match award’ in debut match for Chiefs.
Mountain biking • Finished 26th at the Absa Cape Epic in 2016 • Won the Kalahari Challenge in 2015 • Won the Sabi Experience, a three-day solo event, in 2015
