Akani Simbine The road that an athlete walks to the Olympic Games is one to be admired. Such a road requires courage, and prepares the athlete for one of the most important moments of their career as they endure the ultimate physical and mental test of their abilities.

As the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics draws near, two South African sprinters that have captured the Olympic hope of their country is Wayde van Niekerk and Akani Simbine.
Wayde is currently the only man in the world to hold a sub-44 second time for the 400m, a sub-20 second time for the 200m, and a sub-10 second time for the 100m; and was deemed the 400m world champion in Beijing last year. Akani recently recorded the fastest known 100m time in South Africa, clocking in 9.96 seconds.

South Africa’s next blade runner Ntando Mahlangu was born with a condition called hemimelia which kept him in a wheelchair for most of his young life. In 2012 it was decided that it would be in his best interest to amputate both legs through the knee.

This turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to Ntando who has taken the opportunity to run with both legs and is already setting the athletics track on fire. In the space of four years this young man has won gold, set records and has a real chance of qualifying for the Rio Paralympics. When it comes to the sport of triathlon, there is not much Conrad “The Caveman” Stoltz has not accomplished. This legend of the sport has twice represented South Africa at the Olympic Games, was crowned off-road triathlon World Champion seven times, won no less than 53 XTERRA Championship races, and was recently honoured as the 10th inductee into the XTERRA Hall of Fame.

Ivan Venter was your average South African club rugby player but that all changed in March of last year. After experiencing several months of stomach cramps, he collapsed during a Community Cup match. Extensive tests were done which saw Ivan being diagnosed with colon cancer and has since fought and won against the cancer. Game On Magazine sat down with Ivan in Pretoria to find out how sport helped him through one of the most difficult periods of his life.

Pieter du Preez holds records and gold medals across four different sporting codes. He has done all of this from a wheelchair while dealing with the devastating effects of a degenerative eye disease whereby he’ll eventually go blind. Pieter, or Supa Piet, became the first South African quadriplegic to be nominated for the prestigious Laureus Sports Award for Sports persons with a Disability. Game On Magazine chatted to Pieter after his return from Berlin to bring you this exclusive interview.

van Schalkwyk Stumbling upon greatness Some are born into greatness, others simply stumble upon it. Jana van Schalkwyk is a young athlete who has taken the country by surprise with a javelin talent that she did not even realise she possessed. After picking up a javelin in primary school and leaving onlookers in awe, Jana decided to pursue the potential she accidently discovered.
She has now become the only U/15 female athlete to break the 50 m mark in South Africa. Join Game On Magazine as we uncover the story that is likely to be repeated at the 2020 Olympic Games.

le Roux A youngster on the rise Ikapa Sporting’s 16-year-old midfielder Luke Le Roux is already a well-travelled teenager. The former Stellenbosch University junior player has just returned from his second training experienced at Dutch top-flight club PEC Zwolle, who continue to monitor Luke with an eye on spring-boarding his career into the European circuit. During Luke’s first visit to Holland, the club were impressed with his performance and are continually assessing his progress. His second trip which ended in early April 2016, according to Luke, went well and has encouraged him to keep working hard at improving his weak areas.
