n the first Saturday in June, hundreds of high school football players from around the state of Florida merged upon Boca Raton to showcase their talents in front of tons of DI colleges coaches looking for talent. In attendance at the Sound Mind Sound Body Adidas Camp was one of the top high school football prospects in the country from Hillsborough County. At 6’2, 190lbs Deon is arguably the highest ranked high school football recruit to ever walk the halls of Tampa Bay Technical HS. ESPN.com currently has him listed as the #3 ranked Athlete (ATH) in the country. The 2015 graduate has committed to Clemson as a junior yet schools are still in the hunt for his talents. I caught up with Deon and here what he had to say:
GD: What’s your natural position? I see they have you as an athlete. DC: My natural position is receiver....that’s what I’ll play at Clemson. GD: Who was your first football coach and how was he able to bring out the best in you at such an early age? DC: Coach Cobb...he pushed me to my limits and encouraged me to keep working hard. GD: You had several offers, what made you choose Clemson? DC: The reason I chose Clemson was because I felt more at home. I trust the coaches there and they made it comfortable for me.
GD: What do you plan on majoring in? DC: I’m going to major in marketing and I think I have the talent to have my own fashion line one day.
GD: What are you future plans after high school and after college? DC: To keep working and staying focused on graduating from both high school and college and eventually going to the NFL. After my playing career have that degree to own my own business.
GD: What advice can you give to the young kids coming up behind you? DC: Basically just stay focused, always watch what you say because you never know who’s watching you and try to make right decision. The dual threat athlete can play QB, WR and DB. The list of offers are impressive and are from some of the top colleges in the country to include Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami (FL), Ohio State, Tennessee and many more. Soccer Gemz Introduces Sports to The Youth of Tampa Lutz, Florida- Headed by Jerome Smalls, Soccer Gemz introduces kids between the ages of 18 months and eight years old to soccer. The main mission for Soccer Gemz is to promote personal and social skills development through an age-tailored soccer program. They offer both individual and group settings. A former summer league coach, Jerome Smalls, along with his team of qualified instructors, established Soccer Gemz to help develop future soccer superstars. The goal of the organization is to bring the best out of youth players through a friendly non-competitive program composed of soccer activities, practices and games. By using a more light, positive and motivational environment, Mr. Smalls and his team meet with participants and students each week to teach them strategies and techniques to develop feet / eye coordination and to become better at soccer. Through consistent encouragement and motivation in classes, Soccer Gemz can help your child become a more confident and motivated team player. Everyone within the organization is a professional who strongly believes in the principals that by making learning both fun and positive, kids will not be intimidated by sports but rather inspired into wanting to learn more. How Soccer Gemz Works:
How It All Started
-Uses only an age-appropriate and field standard teaching techniques -Improves the child’s soccer skills and techniques -Teaches the basics of success with high energy -Helps children make new friends -Assists in building a kid’s balance coordination -Encourages sportsmanship and leadership -Helps in developing a child’s passion and love for sports -Teach children the value of having an active and healthy lifestyle they can bring to adulthood -Helps in building self-confidence
The idea was sparked when Jerome and Marchele, his wife, discovered that their daughter wasn’t happy with competitive sports. The two envisioned building an organization that would focus on friendly-competitions while not leaving behind the fundamentals of the sport, such as sports skills development, team spirit and the emotional as well as social aspects of playing soccer. Because of the couple’s passion for soccer, Marchele playing soccer since eight years old and Jerome being a coach and Ashford University MBA graduate himself, they started Soccer Gemz with its first location in Lutz, but soon expanded to Ruskin. Combined with their extensive experience, their mission was and still is to continue to bring a positive, safe training and playing environment for children in Tampa and the surrounding areas. Participants of the program meet once a week and the classes are offered by certified counselors & coaches all-year round. All of coaches/counselors have their background in childcare and soccer, so the parents can rest assure that every class will be a fun learning experience for their children. With Soccer Gemz, kids can make new friends, build self-confidence and have lots of fun. And, what makes Jerome feeling rewarded about Soccer Gemz? For him, it is very fulfilling to be surrounded by children when they are having fun playing soccer and to watch those kids growing in their program. He and his team are also proud that they will become part of these children’s lives forever. For many of the children Soccer Gemz was or will be their first sports program. Soccer Gemz invites parents in Tampa to enroll their children in one of the age or skill based soccer programs they offer. Sign up today at www.soccergemz.com

STARTING FAST
Start fast! Let’s get off to a fast start! Hit them
first! These are some of the slogans or football terms that you have heard and live by while playing football. Starting fast does what? You get the upper hand on your opponent, beat them to the punch. Let’s get off to a fast start does what? It helps the momentum of your team and possibly gives you a 14-0 advantage in the first quarter. We all know what “hit them first” mean. You make the first hit! When the whistle blow and you are running down on the kickoff team and you find somebody to knock under the dirt! Show them I came to bring the pain, not only for this play, but for the entire 2014 season! Now that I have your attention and you are starting to visualize that heart pumping play, your teammates are slapping your helmet and you recognize your mom voice from a distance screaming, “That’s my boy”! Now let me help you really start fast this season. First, you must start fast in the classroom and secondly you must set goals. Starting fast will start with your attitude and approach to the classroom and your goals. If you approach these things with the same passion and desire you have to making the first hit, you will be successful this year. Here are a few tips that will hopefully help you. Educational Tip #1: Introduce yourself to all your teachers. You want to make sure they know you and not what they assume or have heard about you. Tip #2: Sit in the front of the class. Several reasons, first, it gives the impression that you are interested in being in the class and you want to be successful.
Think about this; when you are at practice you try to be the first in line. Why? Yes, you want to show coach I want to be the best and I’m totally committed to you and your drill. Teachers see it the same way. Secondly, college coaches have the tendency of popping up to classrooms to see how you are in the classroom setting. Set goals! Here is a good starting point to setting your goals. Star with team, individual and academic goals. Your teams goals may be: win the conference, reach the playoffs or improve your record from last year. Your individual goals may be: make the varsity team, lead the team in receptions, make the all-conference team and receive a scholarship offer. Your academic goals may be: get a 2.5 G.P.A. (grade point average), improve each grade in your class by one grade letter, and sign up for the standardize test (SAT/ACT). All of these are goals and it is up to you to reach them, but if I were you, I would sit down with a parent, coach or mentor to help me develop a plan of attack to help me achieve my goals. Since I indirectly mentioned that signing up for the standardize test should be one of your academic goals here are the websites www.sat. collegeboard.org and www.act.org here you will find the dates and registration forms. Also, remember if you receive free or reduce lunch you may be eligible for free test registration. Go see your guidance counselor to see if you qualify and more information.
