Room for Rent 21 x 29.7 cm computer graphic 2017

Given the high propert y prices, it is common for people to share an apartment in Taipei cit y. However, these “roommates do not seem to know each other too well, despite the fact that they are in close proximity to each other. We usually come to know a person through his/her appearances and personal attributes, which somewhat reflect his or her personality, so that means our sense of self-identity is also built around the clothes we wear and the way we talk. On the other hand, the living space is also an expression of personal identity, and with that said, I decided to draw a room to illustrate a person’s image.

DRAFT

1. Draw different sections of the picture on seperate layers. 2. U s e d b r u s h e s t o a d d colours to areas which were only black. 3. Combine all the layers.

PROCESS

First, I selected some people, who I was familiar with. Second, based on my own impression of these people, I drew several rooms as illustrations on to flyers. Finally, I printed out these flyers and posted them on the bulletin board at various locations.

Anyone who was interested in the rooms on the flyers could tear off the contact information tabs and visit the website, which contained more information about the owner of the room.

Make you feel very very small 42 x 29.7 cm pencil, computer graphic 2015

STORY The astronaut is surrounded by equations and formulae  in the silence of space. Outer space is so beautiful that he cannot stop crying. The tear drops floating around like pearls. The astronaut realises that he is very, very small. 

Journalists fall over themselves trying to interview the  astronaut when he returns to Earth. The astronaut says, “I’m not a great person, on the contrary, I am so small, yet gravity has still not deserted me”. If all the people have the same feelings as the astronaut, the earth would not be so crowed.

God of Train 210 x 19 cm ink, pen, fabric 2013

If the god of trains existed, it would camouflage itself as a passenger in order to sit beside a person and listen to his/her story. Firstly, I draw several passengers on the paper and cut them out. Secondly, I stuck these pieces on a long piece of fabric, which is a symbol for the train. Finally, I used pencils to draw the shadows of the travellers and wrote their stories inside their shadows, and then hung them with string. The strings then weaved and tangled with each other, creating a web of connections, similar to real relationships between people.

Cube 18 x 15 cm Acrylic Paint , pencil, gesso 2014

I used cubes to describe a sense of safety and a sense of oppression, which comes from my own experiences.

After I watched a horror movie titled cube, I try to use cubes to express the anxiety and oppression I felt in life. For example, the severe learning environment in high school that makes me feel sick. However, I feel safe when I am in narrow spaces, for instance, when I felt secure while I lay in a shopping trolley, and being pushed around by my mother. Thus, I drew a series of pictures to present both of these feelings.

I used tracing paper to copy the outlines, and then cut the newspaper in the same shape.

The Day in MoNTUE 24 x 18.5 cm pencil, computer graphic 2015

I drew a comic called The Day in MoNTUE for L'OUVRE 9: Open the Louvre's 9th Art Comic Collection Exhibition. The comic described a killer chasing a man in the museum of the National University of Education. This comic was selected by MoNTUE and presented in their comic workshop.

the Town of Whale ball pen, watercolor 2013

STORY Sea levels have risen. People have almost gone extinct, and fish are the most populous animal on earth. The whale goes to the apartment ruins often in order to meet a little girl, who has lost her family. One day, the whale warns the little girl that she must leave, because this apartment will become submerged soon. The little girl feels sad that she might not have the chance to see the whale again. Before the little girl leaves her home, she leaves a letter for the whale. Later on, a little boy, who lives alone, has started a project, collecting things from the ruins. He finds the letter in the apartment, and he decides to deliver it to the whale. At the same time, the little girl finds a house which is built with salvaged materials. She uses the balcony as a boat in order to find a new place to live. The little boy returns home to find his balcony is gone! However, he doesn’t have time to fix it, and continues searching for the whale. Suddenly, the whale happens to jump into the air. The whale starts sucking up lots of water and the city’s salvaged materials along with it. Even the little boy is sucked into the whale’s belly. Walking in the whale’s dark belly, he sees many fragments of buildings, which have been in the whale’s body for a long time.

three different compositions

A fish swims so as fast as it can and in order to tell the little girl the bad news. We are running out of the time!” it shouts. “The whale is dying!” The little boy walks for a long time, and then finds a weird telephone-box with a label that says “EARS”. He picks up the receiver and reads the letter. “Dear whale, please do not disappear“. The whale opens its mouth slowly, like a mother’s embrace. Finally, it stops moving. A significant amount of salvaged materials have mixed with the whale’s flesh and looks just like a big ghost town. Eventually, the little girl arrives at where the whale is. She sees the little boy standing in front of the whale’s mouth. He tells her the whale’s reply. “Please live in my belly! And keep alive until tomorrow”
