CONFERENCE NEWS I
wanted to thank everyone that participated in the spring 2016 conferences. We had a total of 222 collegiate and alumni members attend conferences in Atlanta, GA (February 2016) and Hershey, PA (April 2016)! The theme for this year’s conference season is “A Lifetime of Leadership in Service, Friendship and Equality” and I am confident that each attendee had an opportunity to discuss relevant issues and topics that chapters/ members face every day to use during before and after their time with GSS. Topics have included: anti-hazing/bullying prevention, professionalism and networking, using social media to your benefit, including community service on your resume and more. We’ve also had the chance to serve the local communities at each conference. In Atlanta we served the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge and in Hershey we served with the Ronald McDonald House. If you haven’t attended a conference ye, there’s still time! Registration is now underway for the fall conferences - Oct. 21-22, 2016 - Minneapolis, MN / Oct. 28-29, 2016 - Richmond, VA / Nov. 11-12, 2016 - Orlando, FL. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT O
n behalf of the National Board of Directors, I would like to welcome everyone to another great year of Gamma Sigma Sigma!
As members of Gamma Sigma Sigma, we strive to uphold the values and principles that our sorority was founded on. These include unity, leadership, diversity, and service. It all began in 1952 when women from six organizations changed the world forever! These women became the founders of our national girl’s (gamma) service (sigma) sorority (Sigma), patterned after Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, which is now known as Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority. You may have heard or seen the motto of Gamma Sigma Sigma as “Unity in Service.” Over the years that I have been a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma, I have learned exactly why! Through my time here, I have realized how blessed I am to be a part of such an amazing organization and sisterhood! The amount of support and love that my sisters have shown me since I have become President has been unbelievable and immensely heartwarming! I am absolutely loving every minute of this busy, exciting, stressful, memorable, and amazing dream that I am living. I would not trade where I am right now for anything in the whole world. It has been my goal since the day that I decided to run for President and still is to this minute, to lead as many members as I can to love Gamma Sigma Sigma like I do and to help them find this same feeling of fire and passion that is deep in my heart. This is a goal that I will never stop working towards and it is the one goal that will be the deepest in my heart forever. I hope that one day you too can experience this feeling of love for Gamma Sigma Sigma because it truly is an undeniably wonderful organization! he number of photos are growing on Instagram with the #GSSservice, the sorority’s label for service photos and video on social media. If you check out #GSSservice you will find photos from countless members and chapters including Delta Chi at East Carolina University, Zeta Nu at Slippery Rock University, First Coast Alums, and the spring 2016 Banner Service winner River Region Garnets and Pearls Alums. Banner Service is the sorority’s campaign to encourage members to serve and promote their service efforts using Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter during the 32nd Biennium. Through the Banner Service social media campaign, members and chapters/colonies are rewarded for their active promotion of service using #GSSservice. They are rewarded with a banner (for chapters/colonies) or an individual car flag (for individual winners). Members and chapters post photos and videos volunteering or at service events during the biennium, and they are entered into a drawing to win the banner or flag.

rom New Orleans to Costa Rica, Gamma Sigma Sigma members left their local communities to make an impact over the past year.
BY AURELIA SPAUILDING National Service Director
Gamma Sigma Sigma provided $1850 in service trip funding during the first year of the biennium. Support went toward two chapter projects and providing assistance to six individual member applications. The Eta Phi Chapter at Texas A&M were asked by their university to travel abroad to Costa Rica to implement what they call the “Big Event” with an emphasis on service. Eleven members traveled to the country to volunteer in different capacities. The Zeta Chapter at Drexel University received support for their service retreat to Sussex County, Delaware to work with Habitat for Humanity. The chapter helped build homes in the area, and they hope to continue a service trip each year. Gamma Pi member Kasey Stringfield spent her spring break in New Orleans, LA with an organization called Urban Impact. Ten members from the Beta Chi Chapter at Lebanon Valley College traveled to Washington D.C. in fall 2015, and the sorority supported five members with Service Trip Funding. Any individual member or chapter/colony interested in applying for service trip funding can apply at any time during the year. Priority deadlines for reviewing applications are for fall applications and February 10 for spring and summer applications. Details about the financial support and application process is available online at http://gammasigmasigma.org/service/servicetrips.

QUICK TIPS FOR SERVICE REPORTS BY AURELIA SPAUILDING National Service Director
1. Make sure there is an organization listed in Column A. If you helped a family, school, or community list that in place of an organization. 2. Use Column B to describe the project. This is the perfect place to include the name of the event and how much money you donated (if applicable). 3. Column F: The national website have descriptions of what counts for Project IMPACT. Learn more about at http://gammasigmasigma.org/service/project_impact or email the National Service Director if you have questions. 4. Inter-Chapter Projects refer to projects with other GSS chapters or colonies. Be sure to mark all that apply. Projects with other organizations or just your chapter members do not apply. 5. Be sure to report the organization served for service during a Spirit of Service Day or Conferences. Plus, these are inter-chapter as well. 6. Your total hours go in columns (D-J). This is not the total per person. It is the total service rendered at the project. 7. Make sure your service hours are only reported in one of the Columns (D-J) on that row. 8. Confirm that the total hours on the members page matches that summary. Watch the video on completing the National Service Report online at http://gammasigmasigma.org/members/education
NEWS FROM THE CONVENTION COMMITTEE BY KELI CONNOR Committee Chair
is very exciting to announce to announce that Convention 2017 will be in the City of Pittsburgh, PA. The Convention Committee has spent time touring the city IandtChampions: planning Convention and have found that Pittsburgh is such a fun and interesting city. Also, our convention site, the Omni William Penn, is in the middle of downtown so some of our excursions and plans for the convention will take plae within walking distance of the hotel. Did you know that the Omni Hotel is haunted? That’s right! The 22nd and 23rd floors that are currently used as storage are haunted based on multiple internet sites. The theme for the 2017 Convention is iServe. Why this? We chose iServe because the committee has worked hard to develop a program that will use more technology than any other convention int he past, and to hopefully ‘go green’ with the least amount of paper used. We also plan to have more service and to keep our organization involved in it’s primary purpose of service daily while on site. We have some new additions to the Convention experience but will not leave out some of the items we love to see at every Convention. If this has not sold you on coming to Pittsburgh then visit our event page for up to date information, sign up for the convention interest list on the National Website, and look in your chapter’s mailbox for updates. The Convention Committee would like to see this be the largest Convention yet. To do this, we need you to attend. If you have any questions, email convention@ gammasigmasigma.org. We hope to see you in the Steele City from July 5-9, 2017 at the Omni William Penn Hotel!

DISTRICT THREE HAS SUCCESSFUL YEAR
DISTRICT THREE - District 3 is thriving, shining, and serving! The national organization would like to spotlight Theta Alpha, Eta Omega, Gamma Phi, and Zeta Nu. Theta Alpha achieved chapter status, and members are traveling across the globe, being admitted to graduate school, and achieving competitive internships. Congratulations to Theta Alpha! You make us very proud. Eta Omega received the first place award for Habitat for Humanity’s first annual Cardboard City Event. Members had to create a house out of just cardboard and tape while competing against other clubs and Greek organizations on campus. GSS members were awarded $100, in which they chose to donate to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Eta Omega also hosted their first ever Greek Lemonade War to help raise money and awareness for Alex’s Lemonade Stand and was awarded first place for Best Theme at the California University of Pennsylvania Lemonade War. They also received fourth place in Alex’s Lemonade Stand Greek Lemonade War National Fundraising Competition in only their first time participating! Eta Omega continued their winning streak by winning 1st Place for Relay for Life’s table decorating contest with a Superhero theme dedicated to Alex and her efforts to end childhood cancer through Alex’s Lemonade Stand. They were also awarded 3rd Place as the Top Fundraising Team of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event at CalU. This past spring the sisters of Gamma Phi held a Brighter than the Sun Party to promote mental health awareness for project impact. With the help of the counseling center, members were able to share packets of information on depression, anxiety, and seasonal affective disorder. The party also had t-shirt decorating, cookie decorating, a basket raffle, popcorn and a showing of Inside Out. In addition, lemonade was sold in an effort to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The night was themed yellow and the members wore their brightest and craziest letters to help Saint Francis get rid of the winter blues!

Gamma Phi
In July, Zeta Nu was honored at a dinner at the Highmark Caring Place for being an outstanding organization at Slippery Rock University over the past year for their work at The Caring Place, an organization that helps families who are affected by a loved ones passing. A special thanks to Theta Alpha, Eta Omega, Gamma Phi, and Zeta Nu for their diligence in serving their communities and making a true difference in our world. We are proud of you!

ALPHA PSI PARTICIPATES IN LOCAL EVENTS
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - Alpha Psi had an eventful Spring 2016 Semester! Through service projects such as nursing home bingo, highway trash pick-ups, letters to soldiers, and safe house dress sales, the sisterhood has grown stronger. The first I.M.P.A.C.T. project involved helping a local elementary school create sets and costumes for their annual musical. Later in the semester, a Relay for Life event took place at Southeast Missouri State University. Alpha Psi was the top fundraising team overall with one member being the top fundraiser, and they were awarded the golden pillow, meaning they had the most members at the closing ceremonies. This summer, Cape Girardeau Police Department and Southeast Football promoted equality with their inaugural “Cops and Hawks Bowl.” Alpha Psi took part in such an impactful community event that benefitted their local philanthropy, the BackStoppers.

TRAGEDY STRIKES GREEK LIFE AT UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA
ATHENS, GA - Wednesday, April 27th, a group of five students were traveling back to Athens on Highway 15 in Greensboro, GA and were in a head on collision that killed four of the students and left one in critical condition. The students who passed were Brittany Feldman, Halle Scott, Christina Semeria, and Kayla Canedo, all members of UGA Panhellenic Greek organizations. Agnes Kim, the fifth student, remains in a coma at Athens Regional Hospital. The news struck campus hard Thursday morning. Hearts were heavy around campus all day, many were missing from classes due to overwhelming grief. There was a prayer gathering held on Thursday afternoon at the Tate Center, the central commonplace on campus, where friends and two of the brothers of the deceased girls spoke of their memories and prayed for the girls and their families. Upwards of 500 attended the gathering. UGA held a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the girls. The Chi Chapter President Caylor Riemenschneider, along with a few other sisters delivered flowers to the Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, and Pi Beta Phi houses, along with donations to their philanthropies in the Chi chapter’s name to pay our respects and honor the girls that passed. UGA, although a large university, is a very tight knit community and finds comfort in coming together in times of tragedy. Our hearts are with AChiO, TriDelt, and Pi Beta Phi this week. We are praying for Agnes Kim as well, and hoping for her return to UGA.
TAU CHAPTER CREATES BONDS AT PENN STATE STATE COLLEGE, PA - This summer, a few of our members got together to visit our Four Diamonds family. Our chapter is very close to the Tafaels and the Tau members were able to visit them at their house. It was a great way for the members to relax and bond with this wonderful family.
GAMMA RHO BIDS FAREWELL TO SUCCESSFUL ALUMNU PITTSBURGH, PA - Gamma Rho wants to celebrate our wonderful 2016 graduates! These ladies made such a difference in our community and chapter. As they move out into the world, we’re so excited to see their impact on communities everywhere. Our 2016 senior class exemplifies the brilliance, ambition, and diversity of our members. They succeed in various areas and will serve the world with their many gifts! From continuing education to joining the work force, they are all going on to some incredible things. Here are just a few examples of our sisters’ bright futures: Allison Faust will be learning how to serve and care for the animals as she studies Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. As a veterinarian she ‘hopes to provide care for animals of all shapes and sizes in a clinical setting as well as help foster a greater public understanding of the symbiotic relationship between animal and human health.’ Our 2015 – 2016 President, Sarah Pomfret and our 2015 - 2016 and our Membership Vice President, Julia Dawson are going on to serve the communication science & disorders community. Sarah will be continuing her education at the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a Master’s of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. Julia was awarded a scholarship to James Madison University to be a part of their Doctor of Audiology program. Sara Saidman is traveling the world as a Drilling & Measurements Field Engineer with Schlumberger. She will be directing drill operations and drilling wells in countries all over the world. Our 2015 – 2016 Corresponding Secretary, Erin Willis will be joining City Year in Los Angeles, California, where she will be serving kids who are in need and at risk for dropping out of school. By working with teachers and providing supplemental academic, social, and personal support, she hopes to make school more enjoyable and act as a bridge between parents, students and teachers. Gamma Rho is proud of our graduating members and can’t wait to see all they accomplish in their futures!

UPDATE FROM THE ALUMNI DIRECTOR Can you believe that the first half of the biennium has come and gone, (Boy does time fly when you are doing service in the name of Gamma Sigma Sigma.) Thought out the first year of the biennium, I was able to execute the following with the help of the alumni committee: alumni talk back, alumni track at conference, “did you know” campaign , discussion with the alumni committee on improving the auxiliary process, completed an members analysis from the grad/separate report, as well as increased the alumni colonies by three, and two additions reactivation chapters. We have an outstanding new alumni committee that just completed their first conference call, and I must say they were ready to hit the ground running.

GREATER JACKSON ALUMNI COLONY HAS BIG PLANS JACKSONVILLE, FL - The women of Greater Jacksonville Alumni Colony are community service driven in Jacksonville, FL. With them just receiving their colony status on July 13th, 2016 they have already touched the hearts of so many in Northeast Florida. Some of their services in the past few weeks consist of feeding Northeast Florida where they handed out lunch bags to the homeless. Adopt a teacher service where they adopted a teacher in need and assisted with getting school supplies, and help decorated the classroom to provide the children with an amazing classroom experience. They hosted a clothing fundraiser where they reached out to the community of Jacksonville through social media to donate as many clothing articles as possible to help those less fortunate. They also have volunteered at food banks to help organize and distribute food to families. For the remainder of the year, Greater Jacksonville Alumni has planned various service projects such as hosting a virtual Alex Lemonade stand fundraiser and also pin ribbons on individuals in downtown Jacksonville during the Art Walk festival as a form of taking a stand to drunk driving. The sisters of Greater Jacksonville Alumni, although just colonized, plan to touch more lives in the state of Florida and not just Jacksonville, FL.
RAISING AWARENESS WITH ALEX’S LEMONADE STAND BATON ROUGE, LA - While volunteering at the 2016 Baton Rouge Pride festival, members from the Louisiana Alumni Reactivating Chapter sparked conversations about children with cancer and provided details on how the LGBTQ community can contribute to Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
