Spring 2005
2005 Woman Of The Year Did you know that fewer than 5% of America’s National Historic Landmarks honor women or women’s contributions? Women’s history is mostly an untold story in our schools. Very little is in our history books about the contributions of women in our country. Alice Paul was no exception to this historical slight. Paulsdale, Alice Paul’s birthplace, once threatened by surrounding residential development, is a circa 1800 farmhouse located on 6.5 acres in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. Paulsdale is not just a New Jersey treasure, but also an American treasure. The Alice Paul Institute is now recognized as an advocate in New Jersey and beyond for the preservation of women’s historic sites. Through Barbara Irvine’s efforts the Alice Paul Institute has been preserved and has also helped to bring about the saving of other generally unrecognized women’s sites throughout the country. Barbara Irvine was nominated by the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter as our 2005 Woman of the Year for her continued efforts to bring women’s history to the forefront. Barbara has made an incredible contribution to the preservation of women’s history, women’s historical sites and the education of the public about the life and work of Alice Paul. Barbara started her road towards this by attending Roanoke College graduating with a BS in Chemistry. She attended the University of Virginia for her masters in counseling and doctoral studies in career development at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. Barbara has provided leadership for over 20 years in the areas of education, human rights, historic preservation and economic and community development. She has done all of this work as a volunteer.
Her biggest success came with the creation of the Alice Paul Institute, an organization made to help preserve a specific and unique historic resource that now serves as an ongoing leadership development center for women and girls. Barbara’s significant energies then focused on the creation of a National Collaborative of Women’s History Sites. Serving as volunteer Project Director, Barbara secured money from the National Parks Service to launch this newly formed organization. Recently, HBO aired an original movie, Iron Jawed Angels, which told the story of Alice Paul’s work for suffrage and the passage of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution. As a national service sorority, we are thankful for Barbara’s continued efforts on behalf of women’s history. I hope you will join us in Cleveland for our 2005 National Convention to help honor Barbara Irvine as Gamma Sigma Sigma’s 2005 Woman of the Year.

Growth Through Giving When you volunteer, you give part of yourself-your time, energy, skills and feelings. You give to your family and friends, to your neighbors, to your community. Sometimes, you are giving to people you do not know, to people thousands of miles away. You are also giving to yourself. People who volunteer know their contributions to others and to their communities also bring them feelings of selffulfillment and the knowledge that they have made a difference. There is a wide range of ways to volunteer - from helping the needy to aiding schools to lending a hand at museums and other non-profit organizations. There is a need for every skill you have and a benefit for every moment you donate. Volunteering is also a way of saying thank you. It is a way of recognizing the countless others who, in big and small ways, have made life richer and better through donations of time and effort. But there is more to volunteering than giving. As a volunteer, you also reap personal benefits and enhance your personal growth. Tell us how you or your chapter have made positive community change through your volunteer activities, and how your life(lives) has been changed through your community involvement and volunteering. By telling your stories you will inspire others to take on the challenges of community leadership, activism and volunteerism. Email your story in 200 words or less along with a photo if desired, to perspectives@gammasigmasigma.org or postal mail to: Perspectives Editor - 2450 121st Avenue, Clear Lake, MN 55319 2
Lynne’s Lines - A Note From Our National President What do you write when you know you’re writing your last column? About a dozen different topics ran through my mind. There’s so much I could say, some things I probably should say, and here I am feeling almost speechless! I could talk about what it takes to be a leader, or how each of us is a leader whether or not we have a title after our name. I could discuss why it’s important to attend sorority sponsored events, particularly our upcoming convention. I could share what we have tried to accomplish during this past biennium and where we hope the future takes us. While all these are worthy and important topics, I believe there is one that is even more important; gratitude. Of all the feelings I’m experiencing as I get closer to convention, gratitude is the most intense. It’s time for me to say "Thank You". Thank you for having the faith in me to elect me to two terms as your president. Thank you for trusting me to help guide our sorority toward tomorrow. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve been afforded throughout my years on the national board. Thank you for letting me get to know you. I have met wonderful people and made lifelong friends. There is no feeling as wonderful as knowing I have my sorority family out there whenever I need a friend. Thank you for allowing me to return something to this sorority that has given so much to me. Through serving as a national officer I have learned and grown both as a person and as a leader. Skills gained through Gamma Sig have served me well in every facet of my life. Thank you for believing in our sorority and working so hard to preserve our ideals and purposes. We were given a wondrous gift by the members who came before us. I appreciate your help in maintaining and encouraging our integrity so that Gamma Sig will be here for those yet to join. Thank you for the service you give so unselfishly. You are an example of all that is good in the youth of today. So often only the negative aspects of campus life are shown to the world; thank you for being an example of service above self. Thank you to those who graduated and continued their involvement as alumni members. Whether in an alumni chapter or as an alumni-at-large you are making our world a better place through your efforts. You set an example for our collegiate members that the camaraderie does not have to end when we leave campus, that the friendships we make in Gamma Sig continue and transcend physical proximity. And thank you for being mentors both inside and outside of our sorority. To the collegiate members I have had the pleasure to meet, thank you for opening your world to me. Thank you for showing me how Gamma Sig works for you and how we can make your experience the best it can be. To the collegiate members I haven’t been able to meet yet, thank you for being part of my sorority family. We aren’t strangers, just friends that haven’t met! To my alumni friends, thank you for the laughter and the tears, the shoulders and the ears. You are forever a part of my world. To those I have served with throughout the years I extend a very special thank you. Each and every one of you has had an impact on me, probably more than you realize. You are my heroes and I am honored to have served with you. And with that there’s only one more thing to say. Always be grateful for the wonderful experience of Gamma Sigma Sigma and the experiences it brings your way. There’s nothing like it anywhere. Thanks for being part of my world!
Lynne

by Keli Connor, District VI Director
District VI is planning many events for the remainder of the year. All of the district chapters are planning a huge Service Day that will take place April 2 in Nashville, TN. The Beta Sigma and Zeta Epsilon Chapters are putting together service projects for all of the participants to do. The service day should be a great day for fellowship amongst all members in the District VI area. Everyone (even if you are not in District 6) is invited to spend this day from 10 am to 6pm. There will be multiple service projects to do and roundtable discussions while we are doing our service projects. There will be door prizes and goodies available. This is a new activity for District VI. If you would like to participate on April 2nd please email Keli Connor, District VI Director at district6@gammasigmasigma.org for more information. Admission price will be 10 can goods and 5 travel size toiletries per chapter that attends or for alumni/single members 5 can goods and 2 travel size toiletries. Come prepared to have fun, do service and fellowship with other members. District VI is also planning new events this year that have never been done in the district before. Keli Connor, District VI Director is taking donation of toiletries items to make baggies for the American Red Cross to hand out to families in crisis. The entire district has been invited to participate in this district wide inter-chapter service project. Everyone in the district is excited about this event. If you would like to participate with District VI, please email Keli for a list of items needed and where to send them. The members are also getting excited about adding a new chapter to the district in Nashville the same weekend of the service day. We will be chartering our newest chapter Epsilon Psi along with D’Ann Brosnahan, National Vice-President. District VI also has two colonies that are preparing to become chapters of Gamma Sigma Sigma, Murray State Colony and Francis Marion University Colony. District VI also had their Conference this past semester with great attendance. Several members also attended the District V Spirit Day, representing District VI proudly. As you can see District VI has been very busy this year getting ready for the end of school events and preparing to attend Convention 2005 in Cleveland, OH. We hope to have many more updates when we see you there. 4
Collegiate And Alumni News COME ONE, COME ALL to the 2nd annual Cali Rally International Sports Challenge held April 17th at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. A day of fun in the sun with friends will benefit the Cali Orphanage Fund, the sole provider for two orphanages in Cali, Colombia. The violence that ensues from intense drug trafficking and increased guerrilla activity makes the streets of Cali, Colombia, a dangerous place to live. The Cali orphanages provide a home for 110 girls and 80 infants, supplying them with food, shelter and an education. The Cali Orphanage Fund is the sole provider for these children, and the Gamma Delta Chapter would like to help ensure that their future looks as bright as it can. The Cali Rally sponsors a giant international sports challenge on Duquesne’s campus, along with a multicultural fair, Chinese auction and live music. Members can form a team to play in the challenge, individuals can purchase tables to sell items for their business/organization, monetary donations for the Chinese Auction or the Cali Orphanage Fund will be graciously accepted and everyone is invited to come enjoy the live music, refreshments and a fun time. The Gamma Delta Chapter would love to see other chapters participate in this event. It would be a great chance to spend some time together in service and friendship. If you have questions or would like to sponsor a team, table, etc., please contact Leann or Amanda at calirally2005@yahoo.com.
District VII Spirit Day was held in Bethlehem, PA. Over 70 members came from all over District VII on February 19th to attend. The chapters in attendance were Epsilon Xi, Beta Gamma, Zeta, Beta Chi, Zeta Sigma, Delta Omega, Alpha Eta, Gemini, Greater Baltimore and Mid Jersey Shore Alumni Chapters. In addition, several Alumni-at-large were in attendance. The theme was IN THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE. The day began with introductions, games workshop and 2005 National Convention information and trivia. They received information on effective ways to transition officers and the importance of sending reports in on time. Members also shared ideas about recruiting and fundraising. Finally, members used their creativity and painted potpourri boxes to be given out at a local battered women's shelter. Dee Carter, District VII Director would like to personally thank all the members and members-in-training who attended and the members of Epsilon Xi who volunteered to host this event.

Meet Our New District III Director
The chapter helped celebrate Homecoming on October 29-31. On Saturday the members invited family and alumni for a picnic. With hotdogs and chips, the members were able to meet their families plus remember old times with alumni.
Pat Saul, District III Director Collegiate Chapter: Nu at the U of CT Pledged: 1958 Pat has served in many areas in Gamma Sigma Sigma, including National President. In her spare time she enjoys reading Danielle Steel books, following Jeff Gordon #24 in NASCAR, and communicating with other members. Pat has a husband, Mike, 3 children, 5 grandchildren, a Maltese named Brandy and a cat named Tigger. Her favorite service project while in college was heading up a Civil Defense weekend and where she also met her husband.
On October 31 they celebrated Halloween together. Instead of collecting candy, the members asked for can goods. Four hundred and eighty-four cans were collected and donated to United Way! Once again Gamma Sigma Sigma enjoyed the fellowship of each other while helping the less fortunate.

Website Information by Jo Charest, National Webmaster As technology becomes easier and more accessible to all, the popularity of websites is booming. These declarations of identity in a crowded world used to be perks of only major businesses and organizations. Not so anymore! Anyone who has a desire, and something to say, can create a website. Ranging from one page to entire multi-page sites - and offering many different media forms - web pages are a great way to introduce yourself, and your ideas, to the world. Do you know Gamma Sigma Sigma maintains a National website? It’s at www.gammasigmasigma.org, and is made up of two parts: a few basic introductory pages (accessible to the world) and a vast members only section (requiring a password login and containing information which is sorority specific and of interest to members). If you have not checked out the National site, we encourage you to go exploring! Inside the members only section, you will find information on our chapters and colonies, districts, leadership bios, forms and publications, larger events (like National Convention) and lots more. There are pages geared towards pledges, alumni, service projects, etc. We even have a couple of photo albums and a MS PowerPoint presentation out there, along with a bulletin board, where you can share your ideas and questions with other members. Check out the District pages, where you will find listings of all our chapters and colonies. Email our leaders and other chapters with a click – right off the site. All chapters have a national email address – generally, the form is chaptername@gammasigmasigma.org. If someone writes to one of these national addresses, the system forwards the email to the chapter’s own email address behind the scenes. If you have not yet provided the National webmaster with your chapter’s email address, please send it in now. The National organization occasionally sends out mass emails to all chapters, and you are missing these! There are also links on the District pages to chapter websites. We’re missing a lot of links, so if your chapter link is not there, please send your URL to webmaster@gammasigmasigma.org now! Other members are looking for you! WHAT? You don’t have a chapter web page??? Are you aware that the National site can host a web page for you? If you don’t have the time, or a member willing to be your webmaster, contact the National webmaster for more information on how you can have a free page created for you. One more thing – the National website is our forum. It is meant to represent the sorority and support our members, sharing information and ideas we all can use. We want all members to be represented here, so please send in your news, project ideas and help requests, photographs (emailed is ok), special events, etc. And please let us know if there is something you would like to see on the site. See you in Gamma Sig cyberspace!

Alumni or Soon-To-Be Alumni Members As life goes on after college, so can your service to community and nation. As an alumni-at-large or a member of an alumni chapter or colony, you continue to serve as you did in your collegiate chapter. In their career paths, many alumni have a broader sense of the needs of their community. They lend their time, energy, finances and expertise to assist in making local activities successful. The alumni program also offers you the chance to give of your time and talents to help our organization become the best that we can be. Alumni volunteer their skills to lead our organization by working on the National Board of Directors or in National Staff positions, serving on national committees, serving as Chapter Consultants to collegiate chapters and lending a hand when needed. Alumni members use their communication skills and individual talents to present workshops at conferences, lead programs, and interact with resource personnel from other agencies. Remember, you do not have to be a member of an alumni chapter to continue to do service in the name of Gamma Sig. Many alumni-at-large members do service in their communities and receive "100 Hours of Service" certificates at Convention. Let the National Service Director (service@gammasigmasigma.org) know if you are still doing service on your own in the name of Gamma Sig. The alumni program offers a great opportunity to meet other members who share the common bonds of friendship and service. Many life-long friendships begin at alumni chapter meetings, spirit days, conferences and National Convention. You will also enjoy learning about other areas of the country and exchanging service project ideas as well as continuing the associations that began during your collegiate years. As you plan for the future, we hope you will consider continuing your commitment to Gamma Sigma Sigma by becoming an active alumni member. If you need any additional assistance or further information please do not hesitate to contact the National Membership Director at membership@gammasigmasigma.org or the National Alumni Assistant at alumassistant@gammasigmasigma.org. 11
