Meet the 26th National Staff Deb Folsom, Perspectives Editor Collegiate Chapter: Alpha Pi Alumni Chapter: Twin Cities Deb enjoys playing with her two sons, Michael (age 3) and Nicholas who was born in November. In her spare time she loves to shop and watch NASCAR. Deb’s favorite memories in college are when her chapter hosted blood mobiles on campus and working the March of Dimes Jail N’ Bail where the Chancellor of the college was put in “jail” until he could raise $5,000 in pledges. Her job is to collect stories on chapters and members and publish them in Perspectives.

Aletha Hill, Webmaster Collegiate Chapter: Zeta Omega Alumni Chapter: Atlanta Metro Aletha enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, is active in her church where she sings in the choir and designs and maintains various websites. She remains actively involved in service at local nursing homes, Friends of Columbia Heights Public Library and church. Her favorite memories from college are of attending her first National Convention in 1964 (College Park, MD) and of members dressing up in their black dresses and dusty blue GSS blazers on meeting days. Kay’s jobs on the National Staff are to handle the overall coordination of Convention and supervises the Convention Committee.

Susan Lee-Martin, Nominating Committee Chair Collegiate Chapter: Zeta Alumni Chapter: Gemini Susan enjoys reading, cooking and scuba diving. She will also handle the application process for any openings in the current National Board.

Bea Segal, National Archivist Collegiate Chapter: Zeta Alumni Chapter: Gemini Bea has a husband, Harvey and a dog, Bear. D’Ann’s Diary - National President I love winter! No, I do not like the cold and snow, but winter is basketball season. My husband and I love basketball. We attend many high school and college games, and have season tickets to the Woman Gophers (U of MN). In fact as I write this on a Friday, we will be going to a high school game tonight. Gamma Sigma Sigma is a lot like a game of basketball. If you look at each chapter, there are similarities. In basketball as the saying goes, “there is no I in TEAM”. In Gamma Sig there should not be an “I” either. Together the chapter does its service and other projects. Each person contributes to the overall end product. On a basketball team, there is a center. I liken this to the project chair, who gets in there and makes it happen. The center looks for the best time and place to take the inside shot and score. The chair looks for the best ways to carry out the project. The forwards are also looking for that time to shoot; just as the members are looking for ways to help the chapter succeed by assisting whenever they can. The guards on the team are running defense keeping the other team from scoring. In the chapter, this is like the Executive Committee being sure that all aspects of the chapter are covered, so that no one can say that GSS is not the best. Lastly is the point guard, this person often is the “coach on the floor”, calling and helping set up the plays. The chapter president takes on this role. They are there seeing that everything happens for the best of the chapter. The above scenario is the best possible world, but we all know that the ideal doesn’t happen all the time. Many things can get in the way, such as: family, illness, classes, work and other relationships. All of these can take one or more of the “team” out of play. At those times in a game situation, the other members of the team must step up and do something they are not normally asked to do. Hopefully in chapters, there are members who will step up also and take up the slack caused by a member having a difficult time. One other area I see Gamma Sig like basketball is in practice. Gamma Sig offers many times when people get to practice. The first is during the member-in-training period when prospective members see how the chapter operates. Other times are when someone develops their leadership skills by taking on a chairmanship of a project or doing a major part of a large project. These are training ground for becoming an officer, and even then, a person often practices in a lesser office before becoming President. Yes, Gamma Sig is like a basketball game. All members must contribute to have a successful event, working together to make things happen both on and off the court. I guess that is why I love Gamma Sig as I do basketball.

Beta Psi - Indiana University of PA - When this chapter decided to throw a fundraiser, they knew that it was going to be for the hurricane Katrina victims. They already had a plan in mind and that was to throw a Battle of the Bands to raise to money. They sent out information asking bands to play this concert and received an overwhelming response. Due to the large response, they had to limit it to 8 bands as there was only so much time. They threw the concert with each member helping out by taking tickets, introducing the bands and being there to support the event. It was a huge success because not only did a lot of people show up but the chapter raised about $600.00 to give to the Red Cross. Since it was so successful, Beta Psi is thinking about throwing another concert for the Spring of 2006 as music appeals to everyone, no matter what genre you are into. This goes to show that you can make service fun and still have a good time and accomplish what you seek out to do, whatever it may be for.

Zeta Nu - Slippery Rock University Members pictured during their planting ceremony at a local Women’s Shelter. Beta Sigma Chapter - Western KY University hosted their 6th annual Cancer Awareness Week Oct 16-21. The week was filled with a variety of interactive activities. Monday was dedicated to facts about cancers men fall victim to. The cancers included lung, prostate, testicular, and skin cancer. Tuesday’s table was dedicated to facts about cancers affecting women. The "Color for Cancer" coloring contest lasted the second half of the month. This fun activity invited students and organizations to participate. The coloring pages were $.50, and individuals had the opportunity to color the page any way they wished. People were encouraged to be creative. All proceeds and donations raised went to the American Cancer Society for Relay for Life. Wednesday featured the Candlelight Vigil in support of those who either have a form of cancer, or have lost someone from cancer. The moving ceremony started with a welcome and prayer. Then, Ta-Nehisian Yero sung Lean on Me. A young lady who actually had breast cancer spoke, and many were touched by the efforts made to raise awareness about cancer. She was overwhelmed by all the support she received. Thursday’s program was Be Aware! There were two guest speakers who talked about breast cancer, how to find it and also how to give self-examinations. One of the speakers used beads to represent the lumps that women find when doing a breast exam, or when having one done at the doctor’s office. The beads were put on a necklace to remind women to frequently examine themselves. All of the residence halls were also asked to participate in the week’s events by putting up Cancer Awareness bulletin boards in the lobbies. The residence hall with the most creativity and most information about Cancer Awareness would win coupons for six free pizzas. Some of the prizes for the Color for Cancer and Bulletin Board contest included free movie rentals, food certificates to McDonald’s, Firehouse Pizza and Figaro’s Pizza. Overall, the Awareness Week was very informative and successful.

The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter (PAC) has been busy over the last few months doing many different types of service. Some of them include donating money to Habitat for Katrina victims, Pennies for Puppies (Seeing Eye dogs) and purchasing breast cancer research stamps through the post office. They have worked on wrapping coloring books and crayons for Christmas as well as donating toys. PAC collected items for a party at Victory House, a home for teenage girls with problems, participated in Race for the Cure, sent items to troops in Iraq and wrapped utensils for TASK. PAC is continuing on with their long tradition of service in 2006.

The Gemini Alumni Chapter (PA) engaged in numerous service projects throughout the month of October 2005. For the fifth consecutive year members walked in the Philadelphia Aids Walk. The walk is 8.2 miles throughout the city of Philadelphia and all the money raised goes to Aids research. October 22nd was the 9th annual Make A Difference Day. Members joined collegiate members from Zeta chapter to participate in Philly Cares Day which is a marathon day of service that gives children of the Philadelphia area school districts attractive and more functional learning environments. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work painting, scrubbing and cleaning the schools. Over 12,000 volunteers showed up to help, which resulted in over 48,000 hours of service! As the month progressed Gemini showed no sign of slowing down. To celebrate Halloween, members went to the HMS school for children with cerebral palsy. Children at the HMS School have multiple disabilities resulting from cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. While at HMS, Gemini spent time with the children making ghost and pumpkin decorations. The decorations were used to decorate their rooms.

Parliamentary Pointers by Lynne Mowers, National Parliamentarian We have all heard about parliamentary procedure, and I know that probably 99% of our members feel like it’s confusing and bothersome. But parliamentary procedure can be the best tool your chapter has for making your meetings effective and smooth. Parliamentary procedure is designed to protect the rights of each member and the organization as a whole. Every chapter should be familiar and comfortable enough with Robert’s Rules of Order to use the basics. Most people associate parliamentary procedure with bylaws and voting, but Robert’s Rules can really help make your meetings more effective. We have all sat through a meeting one time or another that we were sure would drag on until we grew old and gray. That is where Robert’s Rules can really help streamline your meetings. When chapters follow the basics – being recognized before speaking, making motions then having discussions, knowing proper voting policies – meetings can be made more effective. How many times have conversations broken out and it is clear that no one is in control? Utilizing Robert’s Rules can take care of that. Speaking out of turn is out of order, and the chapter president has the duty to interrupt and get things back on track. Members only have the right to speak on an issue when they have been recognized by the president, and can only speak again after all other members wishing to speak have had the chance. Robert’s Rules also help us make conducting our business more effective. Instead of a free-for-all, discussion is only allowed to occur when there is a motion on the floor. All motions are made in the affirmative, meaning you have to move to do something, you cannot move not to do something. So a member would raise their hand, be recognized and then say something like, "I move to do a carwash next Saturday to benefit the food pantry." Once someone seconds the motion, the president will call for discussion and recognize people to talk one at a time. To keep discussion to a reasonable amount of time, only new and relevant comments should be made. There is no sense in reiterating what is already been said, after all, everyone has already heard it. This is where amendments to the motion can be made, perhaps changing the type of project to something different or selecting a different group to benefit from the project. When discussion is finished, a vote is taken and a decision of the membership is made. So, here is the skinny for this edition of Parliamentary Pointers – wait to be recognized, phrase your motion in a positive way and start it with the words "I move…", discussion only occurs when there is a motion on the floor, and be sure everyone gets a chance to speak once before anyone speaks a second time. Best of luck and remember that making "Robert" your friend makes your chapter more effective!

Empire Alumni Chapter - New York met in October to help pass out water to the racers at the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. The weekend started out on Friday night when some of the members met to make Breast Cancer Awareness pins to sell and raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Many fingers were stuck in the process. The members reminisced and talked about possible up coming events and ideas. The members drove over to the race by dawn to get the tables and cups ready for the racers and walkers. Lori Tedford, Chapter President, was a pro at handing out water and giving the racers/ walkers a cheer from the start. The other members got the hang of it after a few racers drenched them. Empire had a great time and are looking forward to future events. Empire Alumni Chapter will meet again and sponsor a service project at the S.E.T. committee meeting in February, which they are very much looking forward to.

Service Corner by Karen Rankin-Hill, Service Director Congratulations on a great semester of service. I know that this fall has been a trying time on all of us with so many natural disasters and so much devastation. Thank you to everyone who has made the special effort to go above and beyond the normal service you do in your own communities and reach out to others in the gulf coast states. I was so thrilled to hear about the great successes that the chapters enjoyed celebrating the National Make A Difference Day on October 22nd. A special service nod goes to the eight members of Twin Cities Alumni chapter who got together for a day of service. The members made 36 homemade pictures frames and homemade gift bags and cards for a local women's shelter. They donated a disposable camera and a gift card to the shelter director so that each woman's picture could be taken with their children. Many of the women at the shelter do not have a picture of them with their children, or if they do, it is with the person that they are trying to get away from by living at the shelter. Twin Cities performed over 32 hours of service for the day. I have enjoyed speaking and emailing so many of you about your consistency in performing ongoing projects. For the past two years, the Beta Sigma chapter at Western Kentucky has provided one monthly philanthropy or activity to raise money for a non-profit organization. The chapter has created a wonderful history for its members and the campus by consistently volunteering and returning to favored projects year after year. In November, the chapter held their 9th annual Talent Explosion, a benefit that is brings in canned goods for a worthy group. This year the members held the Talent Explosion to benefit a shelter for abused women and the Salvation Army. Congratulations to Beta Sigma on their 37th year as an outstanding chapter. Remember to let me know what you and your chapters are achieving in service! I cannot highlight your accomplishments if I do not know about them. In Service‌Karen

March of Dimes - A Gamma Sigma Sigma Service Partner Do the Math: Premature Birth is Taking a Toll Most people do not realize what a serious and widespread problem premature birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) is. Besides being the leading cause of newborn death (within the first month of life), it can lead to serious lifelong health problems like mental retardation, blindness, chronic lung disease and cerebral palsy. So what toll is prematurity having on babies today?

Do the math: Half a million babies are born prematurely each year. That is 1,367 babies each and every day. Thirteen babies die every day as a result of prematurity/low birthweight. One in 8 babies in the United States is born prematurely. Premature birth is affecting babies in communities like yours all across the country. In half the cases we do not know why. The sooner we find answers, the better for our babies. Go to www.MarchofDimes.com to see what you or your chapter can do for the pink and blue!
