AN INTERNATIONAL GATHERING OF SOCIAL MOVEMENTS ON WATER AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING MAY 29, 30 & 31, 2015 • DETROIT, MI • USA You are invited to a 3-day gathering of international and national social movements convening to strategize in defense of the human right to water, sanitation and affordable housing. Across communities and nations, low income and poor people are being denied the basics needs of survival, including water and shelter. Our children, seniors, and persons with disabilities, chronic illnesses and diseases are among the most threatened among us. Thousands of Detroit residents have been living without water for Months with some people as long as several years. Upwards of 40,000 local homeowners are currently at risk of losing their family homes to tax foreclosures, many of which have overdue water bills attached as tax liens. Residents of nearby Flint are breaking out in hives and losing hair from contaminated water in their public system. The current economic policies are forcing millions of people into poverty as we are no longer needed. We are being replaced by technology while the rising cost of living continues to challenge every part of life: access to water, housing, education, community safety — nothing is sacred. You will not be provided with those resources Human beings need to survive. We reject this deadly philosophy and those which seek privatization of public resources, along with destruction of the commons. Instead we are setting forth community-based strategies and policies in defense of our human rights, dignity and quality of life.
