Dear Friends, GA was founded on the premise of servant leadership, a term used by many, but often misunderstood by the majority. We measure our organization’s success, not by the raw quantitative data that you’ll see in this annual report. We measure it by the lives we’ve changed...the lives we’ve saved. By the returning citizen who gets a second chance at life; by the homeless veteran who has a stable income and a place to now call home; by the troubled teen who was diverted from a life of crime and is instead, on a career pathway; by the grieving children and their family who wake up to trauma every day but who have now embraced positive alternatives to an otherwise life destined for perpetual crime, violence, and poverty. We measure it by the number of women who have invested in themselves by learning a new trade and braved a job in an otherwise male-dominated field. We measure it by the number of youth who make the decision to not to not take drugs, not because they are forced to, but because they recognize the importance of living a healthy life and maintaining healthy relationships. We measure success by the youth in our faith-based programs who are saved: who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. It’s the number of staff whose professional development we’ve invested in, not because a grant calls for it, but because we understand the importance of providing staff with the tools they need to serve with excellence. Our Board of Directors serves me so, that I can serve my executive team, so they can serve our managers, so that they can serve frontline staff, because they are the ones who are directly serving our people on a daily basis. The same way that “He must become greater so that I can become less” (John 3:30) is the same way that our team operates. We decrease, so our clients can increase. We understand that the work we do is not about us, it’s about serving those whom we are called to serve. It’s about the many others that need our services that we have not yet reached. It’s the services we provided that are not afforded by grant funding. It’s the activities that we do, not out of funder obligation, but out of moral responsibility. Mark 10: 43-45 reminds us “Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” We give God the glory that we were able to do the good work that we did in 2021 with grace and humility. We are blessed that, despite the global economic hardships that many have had to contest with, during 2021 as an organization, we grew tremendously in terms of our human resources, our menu of service offerings, and our impact footprint which now includes Palm Beach County. Great is thy faithfulness. It’s been 16 years, but we know our work has only just begun.

At the time, I was homeless, I did not have my high school diploma, and was having difficulty finding a job. After meeting with EFFECT’s staff, they introduced me to their Project RENEW Broward and I was enrolled in both programs. Since joining EFFECT and RENEW, I’ve earned my certificate of completion in basic construction, OHSA 10, and CPR & First Aid. I now have stable housing, I am working towards my GED, and I have a more positive outlook on life and what I can accomplish. They were also able to help me with transportation and food assistance. Gang Alternative, Inc. has been supportive and I am very grateful for the services.” – Lizette B., EFFECT

In November, a grandmother was referred to GA to get help for grandson who was “acting out” with bereavement concerns. Since then, the child has made significant growth in his self-expression, behavioral management, and self-advocacy due to the collective program efforts of our UPLIFT and COS programs. The grandmother stated that the loss of the child’s parent took a drastic toll on her family, and credits GA for adding healing to their household by meeting each member where they were at.
