Rough luxe debuts at Door County Interiors
W
hat do you get when you mix furniture that looks rough and natural with upholstered pieces that are sophisticated? You create the rough luxe look, a style growing in popularity. In fact, rough luxe is one of the new styles on the showroom this year at Door County Interiors & Design, 7266 Hwy. 42, two miles south of downtown Egg Harbor. Carol Trimberger, co-owner of Door County Interiors & Design, explains that the rough luxe look, first of all, is a timeless decorating style. It’s created when wood furnishings appearing worn are paired with beautifully upholstered pieces and stylish designs. In a rough luxe great room, for example, a table that looks reclaimed and whitewashed (but is actually new and quite functional) may be topped by accessories such as mercury glass bottles and a decorative wood finial. Hanging above the table are mirrors of offbeat shapes and with wood frames. Bringing the luxe part into the scheme are furnishings including high back chairs with creamy colored upholstery and dark wood trim with spooling detail. “The result is a room that is interesting to look at and comfort-
able, and it’s also fun to choose the pieces and create the rough luxe design style,” Trimberger said. “Rough luxe is also an interior design style perfect for people who have antiques and want to mix them with a couple of new pieces. It’s a way to freshen up what you already own,” added Jim Marquardt, home furnishings manager, Door County Interiors & Design. Another example at Door County Interiors & Design is a bedroom in rough luxe style. A creamy colored upholstered headboard is juxtaposed with a worn (but new) gray wood bedside table with a metal top. A stylish upholstered chair with slim dark wood arms is nearby, while a table, made from recycled railroad ties, stands at the foot of the bed. “Rough luxe creates a subtle color palette, but you can pop it with as much color as you want,” said Sue Bryzek, interior designer. “It offers a nice juxtaposition – to have a piece in rough luxe in the room,” added Annette Anderson, interior designer, Door County Interiors & Design. Carpet makes homes warm and cozy There are many homeowners who are quick to rule out carpeting as a decorating option. After all, it seems that hardwood is the flooring of choice for new homes and resales. However, carpeting offers a host of advantages homeowners would be wise to carefully consider. Consider carpet for your next remodeling project.
Noise reduction Carpet prevents the sounds of foot traffic, which is advantageous in a busy household. It also absorbs the ambient sounds in a room, which would normally bounce off of hard surfaces, such as walls or hard floors. Carpeting also mutes sounds between floors, which can be good if you live in an apartment or condo with shared walls.
walker often find that the soft surface of carpeting coupled with the padding underneath provides a soft surface underfoot. Should falls occur, there will be something to cushion that fall. Also, carpeting helps prevent slips.
Insulation and warmth For those who live in cold climates or simply find their home tends to be chilly, carpeting can be a very good insulator. It Safety Households with children or elderly also feels cozy to step upon when there adults who are not using a wheelchair or is a chill in the air. Carpeting can help
4
HI_2010.indd 4
to reduce energy costs by trapping more warmth inside of the home, and may even add to the R-value of the home, insulation’s resistance to heat flow. Low cost Carpeting tends to cost much less than other types of flooring, which can make it decorative and cost-effective in a home. Also, because of the number of styles, grains and colors available today, it’s possible to match carpeting to any number of design options.

Allergy myths Many people shy away from carpeting, believing it can exacerbate allergy symptoms. In order for allergies to become a problem, certain allergens must become airborne and inhaled. According to Shaw Floors, carpet is capable of holding significant quantities of soil, dust, etc., without appearing very dirty. It has been demonstrated that carpet is quite efficient at keeping allergen and other small particles such as pollen out of the air. In 2002, two schools in North Carolina were the subject of a study conducted by Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and University of North Carolina (UNC) investigators. One school had mostly resilient tile floors, while the other was 70 to 75 percent carpeted. The study found that airborne contaminants, possible sources of allergens, were higher over the tiled
floors than over carpet. The green factor Many carpeting manufacturers are revamping the way the public looks at carpeting. Sustainable materials are being incorporated into carpeting manufacture, and the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus program is setting high standards for chemical usage and fume emissions. Many times old carpeting is now recycled into new carpeting, reducing waste that ends up in landfills. When redecorating the home, don’t rule out carpeting as a safe, convenient and cozy design choice. Stronger than ordinary carpet New Tigressa carpet boasts softer, stronger benefits. What are the advantages of prefinished wood floors over traditional installed wood floors?
First of all prefinished wood floors are stained and finished at the factory so you don’t have to deal with toxic fumes, sanding dust, labour, and the long wait required for staining and applying coats of finish at home. Another advantage is that the finish is applied under controlled conditions, which means that you don’t have to worry about dust or other contaminants affecting the finish. Manufacturers can also apply more coats of finish giving you added protection. In fact, the Mercier Generations finish features ten coats applied at the factory with extreme accuracy. It produces a smooth, uniform finish with unparalleled abrasion resistance and beauty. Lastly you save on the cost because it cuts down on the labor required to install.

Q: A:
What is the difference between laminate flooring and engineered wood?
Laminate flooring may often look like wood but it’s not. It’s made of melamine-infused paper glued to a wood chip composite. Engineered wood, much like solid hardwood, is real wood. It is a veneer of hardwood in the species of your choice glued on top of (in most cases) three to five thin sheets of crossbanded wood. It’s ideal for kitchens and basements where 3/4-inch solid wood floors are not recommended because of high moisture level variations. Solid wood will expand or contract with heat and moisture, whereas engineered wood flooring, because it’s made of crossbanded layers of wood, offers more dimensional stability. Mercier’s engineered wood flooring offers optimum stability because it contains seven crossbanded layers of wood. Another advantage of engineered wood flooring versus laminate is that engineered wood can be sanded after scratches and dings develop. Engineered flooring is also a great choice for renovations because it can be installed directly onto most existing floors. More information on wood flooring is available at www.mercierflooring.com. n

hen it’s time for a new room color, homeowners can search for inspiration in Europe, but they may not have to go
that far. They can peruse, for example, their closets, where they may have a favorite color they continually wear. Other places to get color ideas are from a painting already in the room, at a furniture store or inside magazines.
Creating a color scheme A room’s color scheme begins with one color the homeowner already likes and includes about two more. Different values from light to dark are also important to creating a look in a room, according to

Carol Trimberger, co-owner, and Sue Bryzek, interior designer, of Door County Interiors & Design, Egg Harbor. They also point out all the ways color comes into play in a room: walls, ceiling, upholstery, area rugs, window treatments, accessories and more. A homeowner who wants to create a sophisticated and natural look can begin with subtle wall colors such as taupe or off-white. Introduce a scheme of green, green-gray and light yellow in furniture upholstery and accessories such as throw pillows, suggested Annette Anderson, interior designer, Door County Interiors & Design. “For a sophisticated look, the color should be easy on the eyes and easy to be around. The colors of nature

are sophisticated, and you will feel comfortable around them for a long time,” Trimberger said.
at the store. People can learn how to coordinate colors of paint, upholstery, countertops, cabinets, lighting, fixtures, flooring, accessories and window treatments. “We’ll put an entire home plan together, and you can implement the plan by one room, two rooms or three rooms. Just work on it as you can. It’s a way to prevent mistakes as you go forward with color,” Bryzek said. Door County Interiors & Design is a home furnishings and accessories store and design center located at 7266 Hwy. 42, about two miles south of downtown Egg Harbor. More information is online at doorcountyinteriors.com. n
Playing tricks with color Color creates powerful effects, Bryzek added. For example, an extremely high ceiling can be painted chocolate brown, which would give the impression of lowering it and making a room appear cozier. Conversely, in a small room, a ceiling painted white may make it the room appear endless. “Ceilings should be considered the fifth wall, and don’t be afraid to make it another color than the walls. Everything doesn’t have to be the same,” Bryzek said.

Window treatments add color, texture Window treatments also make a powerful color impression. But Door County homeowners often resist the idea of covering up a beautiful water view with blinds or shades. Actually, blinds and shades add intriguing color, texture and even help protect furnishings and save on energy costs, experts say. “A proper window treatment makes everything more pleasant. They are a wise investment if you analyze the energy you are going to save and the joy you get from window blinds. They just add a lot to a house,” said Ron Trimberger, co-owner of Door County Interiors & Design. From pleated window shades to a woven wood blinds or pretty side panels, window treatments contribute to the color scheme and also bring texture into the room. “I love the texture of woven woods on windows, and they also afford privacy,” Bryzek said.

ntil now, there’s been nothing quite like the experience of catching your favorite flick in the theater, but today’s technology makes it possible to bring the magic of the theater experience to your home. Each year, home theater equipment becomes more sophisticated and affordable, allowing more homeowners to turn their family rooms into screening rooms. With a little attention to lighting, seating, sound and the right TV screen, you too can create a cinematic experience in your home. According to THX LTD., the organization that created the design and certification programs for cinemas, audio systems and HDTVs, you can create the feel of the theater by simply making the right choices for your primary TV viewing area in your house. Television The most important decision you make will be the equipment you select to play your movies. Yet, even with advances in technology like the Blu-ray high-definition format and enhancements in picture quality, only a few of today’s most advanced flat screens can replicate what you would see at the theater. To assist consumers in selecting an HDTV for their home theater, THX has developed a Display Certification, which requires rigorous testing to prove that the television is able to recreate the vivid contrast, bright colors, and detail present when a movie leaves the director’s studio. The certification ensures that what viewers are seeing at home replicates the movie experience. “Now you can see every jaw-dropping explosion and special effect just as it is presented in the theater, except you’ll be watching from the comfort of your couch,” says Rick Dean, senior vice president of THX. The only LED LCDs in the U.S. to receive THX Display Certification are the new Infinia HDTVs from LG. These sets are equipped with Full LED Slim technology that employs patented backlighting for an ultra-slim depth without sacrificing picture quality. By simply selecting one of the THX modes on an LG LX9500 or LE8500, you can turn your living room into a screening room with just the touch of a button. No professional installation is needed. Movie buffs will appreciate the accurate recreation of the filmmaker’s vision, Dean explains. In fact, at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival – one of the leading film festivals in the U.S. - German filmmaker Björn Richie Lob’s documentary Keep Surfing was screened on LG Infinia LED HDTVs. It was the
first time a television had ever been used for a screening at the festival. Seating Why settle for a rickety theater seat when you can tailor the seating in your cinema to your comfort? Whether you favor a cushy recliner or couch to cuddle on, the beauty of having a home theater is being able to add that sense of comfort that you might not get at your local cinema. Where do you place your TV in relation to your seating for optimal viewing? For the best seat in the house, Dean recommends the following distances based on the size of your television: ● 35-inch TV = 3.5-5 feet ● 40-inch TV = 4-6 feet ● 50-inch TV = 5-7.5 feet ● 60-inch TV = 6-9 feet Lighting It’s also important to make the lighting in your home work with the TV. Some televisions have settings that allow you to adjust the color to match the lighting in your living room with the touch of a button. When evaluating the lighting in your home just remember that darker is most often better, so add in dimmer switches where you can. Sound Some TVs have excellent sound quality built right in, however you may wish to go with a surround sound system to catch every whisper and feel every explosion. Dean suggests, “Place the main speakers at the front of the room and make sure the tweeters are near ear level to where you will be sitting. Hard surfaces will cause sound to echo, so you may want to consider covering uncarpeted floors with a rug and place curtains over any windows.” Atmosphere Have some fun decorating the room with posters from your favorite movies or get a popcorn maker. Part of the fun of having a home theater is you can add your own flair to the movie experience. But most importantly, make your space comfortable. All of these fine products are available at the Hammersmith store in Sister Bay. n Courtesy of ARAcontent

Hardwood A cabinets enhance universal design
comfortable yet more accessible and barrier-free home are the desired aims of universal design. A term coined in the 1980s by architect Ron Mace, universal design is defined as “the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.” For the now aging Baby Boomer generation, which comprises about one-third of the U.S. population, universal design is just what the doctor ordered. American hardwoods and universal design Universal design makes homes practical and user-friendly, and whether remodeling or buying, as these active, older adults contemplate future health and mobility issues, they want to remain in their homes and continue to live independently. To
satisfy their desire for a warm, beautiful space, incorporating American hardwoods into the homes makes them attractive and inviting places in which to live. According to the American Hardwood Information Center, (www. HardwoodInfo.com), and Gil Thurm, executive vice president of the Hardwood Manufacturers Association, “when it comes to universal design, American hardwoods are the all-natural choice for sturdy, attractive and healthy design materials. The wide range of species – oak, cherry, maple, and more – provide a spectrum of colors and grain patterns to satisfy any decorating scheme.” Kitchens and bath Modern kitchens are much more than a place for food preparation. Now family gathering places, even centers to entertain guests, kitchens need to be comfort-

able, convenient and safe for everyone. Key to making a home barrier-free is the use of adjustable-height work areas and unique cabinetry. Wall-mounted cabinets, for example, leave floor spaces clear and easy to clean. Add an all-natural material like American hardwoods, and you have a healthy, beautiful kitchen as well. Here are some design features to raise the level of convenience and usability for everyone: ● Varied-height cabinets and countertops will accommodate multi-cook families, so parent and child may prepare a meal together. ● Make components accessible whether standing or seated. ● Sliding drawers, rollout shelves and lazy Susans make items easier to reach. ● At the base of floor cabinets, keep the toe/kick space deep enough to accommodate wheelchairs. ● Lower cabinet doors and drawers will require reinforced hardware in case they are leaned on for support. ● D-shaped or lever-style handles and magnetic touchand-release cabinet doors are perfect for hands of any size or strength. ● To allow full use of the cabinet door frame consider swingaway hinges. ● Under-the-counter refrigerator drawers and other flexible appliances make a kitchen more accessible for someone wheelchair bound. Similar universal design ideas can be applied when remodeling a bathroom: ● Vary the height of vanities to lessen the need to crouch. ● Provide seated users adequate under-the-sink knee space. ● For additional storage, consider a cabinet on wheels, stored under the sink and movable. Solid hardwood cabinets, vanities and flooring add a degree of elegance to the remodel. Don’t worry about water damage. Today’s water-resistant finishes form a watertight seal protecting the wood yet allowing it to expand and contract, normally. Throughout the home Built-ins and wall-mounted cabinets provide open floor space to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers. Media room cabinets house and hide electrical components. Larger bedrooms often feature a breakfast bar containing cabinets for storage, a small refrigerator and countertop space for brewing coffee. Walk-in closets with built-in drawers, pull-out trays and multi-height hang bars help keep everything organized and easily accessible. To add style to the mix, solid hardwood cabinets complement
existing furniture and room decor and add a level of quality unmatched by other construction materials. With a host of species to choose from, major cabinet makers are embracing these ideas with special lines and features that blend the concepts to add function, comfort and beauty. Healthy materials Hardwood floors are commonly found in universal design plans. Providing easy maneuverability for wheelchairs and mobile storage units, simple regular maintenance such as dust mopping, sweeping and vacuuming keep wood floors looking great. American hardwoods are also non-toxic and do not trap allergens such as mold spores and dust, and are often recommended by doctors for individuals with allergies or asthma. A perfect match For those looking to add the functionality and comfort of universal design, “universal home design” search on the Internet is a great place to begin. Then enjoy the best of both worlds by incorporating the timeless beauty and warmth of American hardwoods into your plan. Learn more at www.HardwoodInfo.com. n

Recycled glass countertops latest trend in “Green” home decor G lobal warming has become a top of mind concern for most Americans over the last few years thanks to the devastating tragedies from tropical storms around the world due to climate change. As a result, more and more people are increasingly sensitive to the environment and show a stronger desire for preserving our resources and recycling. Countless corporations are following suit by incorporating “green” philosophies to their regular

product offerings. This “green” trend has made its greatest impact in home decorating with consumers and decorators now gravitating to more eco-friendly alternatives for interior decor. One trend that is leaving a “green” mark in homes across the country is the choice of recycled material countertops over more conventional surfaces. Green countertops are recycled or renewable surfaces that

minimize impact on the environment during their production. They are comprised of different combinations of natural and man-made materials and often include some form of recycled glass. Many are attractive and viable alternatives to conventional countertop materials. The latest entry into this category, Elements by Durcon, is creating quite a buzz as it’s a “green” countertop surface that also offers unmatched durability, cleanliness and aesthetic qualities. Durcon, the leading U.S. manufacturer of epoxy resin quartz countertops and sinks for the last 35 years, recently launched an eco-friendly surface variation – Elements by Durcon – for the residential and commercial markets. Stone fabricators, dealers and architects across North America agree that the product’s unique qualities and highly durable characteristics set it apart from first generation eco-friendly surface products currently available. Molded from a proprietary blend of fine quartz, epoxy resin, and clear recycled glass, the material is solid, non-porous, never requires sealing, and is homogenous in consistency. Its unique manufacturing process produces an incredibly silky smooth and durable countertop surface. “Elements is ideal for the discerning customer who desires a unique eco-friendly product for kitchen countertops, vanities, fireplace surrounds, and commercial applications,” explained Mark Hanna, President of Montreal-based Leeza Distribution Inc., one of North America’s leading distributors of premium countertops such as Elements by Durcon. Elements is an incredibly safe and durable countertop surface ideal for kitchens, as it is certified by NSF, is a very low VOC emitting material and boasts the highest heat resistance rating available. “Elements is stylishly sleek with a distinctly silky feel that works beautifully with any decor,” Hanna added. “From Old World to ultra-modern, it provides a look that is very unique, timeless and clean.” Its versatility is its strongest attribute. In addition to custom colors, Elements by Durcon is available in two alternate design variations – “Titanium” and “PUR.” Titanium features a dramatic metallic flecked surface. The highlight of the PUR line is Pristine that is “already a hit with designers,” said Hanna, due to its rare, deep, and absolute white quality that is in high demand in today’s decors. Elements surfaces are so durable that unused and old countertop material is recycled by Durcon for use in road construction. More information available at leezadistribution.com. n

Few home improvement projects provide a more rewarding finished product than installing a home theater. However, when doing so in the basement, the area first must be prepared before homeowners can get to work.
Basement remodels a favorite for homeowners
P
erhaps thanks to the growing popularity of home theaters, basement remodels are becoming more and more popular among the nation’s homeowners. With advancements in television and home theater technology, it’s no wonder homeowners are looking to make the most of their oft-ignored basements to enhance their home entertainment experience. But remodeling a basement involves more than simply throwing out the pingpong or pool table and replacing them with leather sofas and a big screen television. Before doing anything with the basement, it’s best to prepare the area to ensure the home theater experience is as enjoyable as possible. ● Check for moisture. Nearly every basement has issues with moisture. Perhaps victims of floods or heavy rains, basements do not typically boast ideal living conditions, requiring work before homeowners and their families and friends can spend time in them knowing they’re safe.
16
HI_2010.indd 16
Many times, fixing moisture inside a basement involves going outside the home, particularly to inspect gutters and the external surface area around the basement. Gutters and downspouts could be channeling water in the direction of the basement. If so, direct downspouts away from the home. Surface area around the basement could also be directing water toward the home. If that’s the case, it might be a safe bet to consult a landscaper to determine if that area can be dug up and possibly made to slant away from the house. While this might seem time-consuming, it’s worth it to ensure a home theater does not become a musty place where no one wants to spend signficant time. ● Decide what to do with the ceilings. For those who really want to create a theater experience in their basement, the ceilings will likely need some work. Many basements have ceiling tiles, which create an ambience more suited to a basement than a
Home Interiors • 2010
6/21/10 7:56:11 AM
theater. Homeowners should consider replacing ceiling tiles with drywall. It’s good to work on the ceiling before doing anything with the floors, as paint or debris from the drywall will likely drip or fall onto the floor, creating a mess that no one wants on his or her new floor. ● Examine the walls. After working on the ceilings, the walls should be next on the list. Home theaters tend to have dark walls like those in movie theaters, so if the walls are white, homeowners might want to paint them with a darker color. Again, this should be done before doing anything with the floor to avoid stains or debris on any new flooring. If the walls need new drywall, it’s a good idea to plan a layout of the room once it’s a finished product before hanging any new drywall. This will give a sense of which walls will need holes for cables and other cords, and holes can be cut in the dry wall accordingly once that layout has been determined. ● Fix the floors. Oftentimes, basements are not carpeted, typically covered with a throw rug here or there and some linoleum tiles. However, for those hoping to get a genuine theater experience in their basement, it’s best to lay down some carpeting. Much like the walls, carpets should be a darker color to create an
ambience more like that of a movie theater. If putting a refrigerator or bar area in the basement, avoid laying carpet down in that area as spills might stain the new carpet. Of course, before laying down any carpeting, homeowners must clear the room of everything that’s removable. This should give homeowners the chance to remove any clutter from the basement and decide what to keep or clear out of the basement. ● Before buying any products, determine if they will fit. Chances are large products can fit through the doorways and into the basement. Since many homeowners have pool tables and refrigerators in their basements already, it’s highly likely that other big ticket items like large screen televisions and leather sofas will be able to fit through the doorways. However, for homeowners who have used their basement largely for storage, it’s best to do some measurement before visiting the nearby electronics store and buying that big screen television. After all, there’s no guarantee that 70-inch projection screen television or those leather armchairs can fit through the basement doorway. Though homeowners will eventually find something they like that will fit, the doorway measurements might dictate that decision more than homeowners know. n
