Dorothy Bliskey Special to The Reporter Step through the door at The Goldsmith, 177 S. Main St., in downtown Fond du Lac, and you realize this is not your ordinary jewelry store. While glimmering diamonds and other gems along with an array of eye-catching giftware dazzle customers, there is much more going on behind the scenes. Nine employees are hard at work. Jewelry is being designed and created for customers using state-of-the-art computers, model-makers, laser welders, finishing machines and other tools located on the premises, out-of-sight from shoppers. Also humming in the background is the business of repairing not just jewelry but also eyeglasses frames – a craft that has taken on a life of its own. The Goldsmith averages 4,000 onsite repairs and special orders for jewelry design work each year. Owner Ron Emanuel, who established the store in 1974, learned to design jewelry through formal education at Milwaukee Area Technical College in Milwaukee, where classes focused on jewelry repair, silversmith work and art metals. He served an apprenticeship at Thiet Jewelers in Whitefish Bay, working alongside an Italian goldsmith.
Designing jewelry “My interest was stirred,” said Emanuel, noting that he has been designing jewelry for more than 30 years. Emanuel’s creative ability is a culmination of many years of self-taught dedication to metals, their properties and characteristics, and listening carefully to a customer’s request. “I apply the step-by-step process of designing a piece of jewelry that the customer is happy with,” he said. For holiday gift giving, shoppers will find a selection of ready-made silver, gold and platinum jewelry in a wide price range from all over the United States and beyond. A line of sterling silver jewelry from Switzerland and sparkling diamond rings call out to shoppers as they enter the store. “Christmas is an important time for us at The Goldsmith,” Emanuel said. “Finding the perfect gift is important to every Goldsmith continued on Page 2 >>>

customer, and the store is brimming with ideas. This year, we are seeing a strong diamond jewelry influence. Yellow gold is making a comeback, and we have some beautiful pieces. Colored diamonds are also part of our inventory.” He notes that the holidays are a time for engagements. “We have a deep commitment to helping people find the right ring at the right price,” he said. “Today’s consumer is much more educated and knows what they want. Most know a great deal about color, clarity and cut. We try to work with them to find the most perfect ring during this important time in their lives. It’s exciting for us as well, because the happiness usually spills over.” The Goldsmith designs engagement rings, anniversary rings, mother’s rings, bracelets, earrings, pendants and every type of jewelry imaginable.

“Our watch selection has grown considerably,” said Emanuel, noting that there is a wide price range. Some of the brands carried include Citizen, Tissot (a Swiss watch with unusual features); Lumi Nox (the Navy Seal watches); Skagen (from Denmark), Accutron; and Ed Hardy (a contemporary line featuring skull art and more).

Art, sports and food converge at
Coliseum Dorothy Bliskey | Special to The Reporter The century old Romanesque-style stone building, with a pair of lions gracing the front entrance, is home to the Coliseum Sports Bar and Grill, 91 S. Main St. Built as a bank in 1903, the historic structure has an interesting past. By the 1920s, it was transformed from a bank into a dining establishment called H & H Cafeteria and later became the Lion Cafe. Several other eateries — even a lighting store — occupied the grand old world atmosphere and space at one time. Established by owner Peter Katris five years ago, the Coliseum Sports Bar and Grill has cleverly captured the flavor of the building’s history, architecture and the mystic of ancient times — chariots, empires and Trojan warriors. Local artist Patricia Strong has swept her brush across interior walls and recently above the windows outside to create art reminiscent of ancient Rome and Greece. “Her art is wonderful,” said manager Brandy Alexander. “Because the Coliseum owner is from Greece, he wanted her art to reflect some of the ancient ties to Greece and sports. She has definitely been able to do that effectively, bringing the ancient in with the current sports teams and legacies like Vince Lombardi.”
Wall mural While diners munch on spicy (and notso-spicy) chicken wings or the owner’s
popular Greek gyros, their eyes scan across the massive 10-foot by 40-footlong wall mural painted by Strong. The scene shows an ancient coliseum (once a setting for brutal sports), an Olympic torch and — bringing it to modern times — a Packers player throwing the football to a Badgers receiver while a Fond du Lac hockey player races by. “Sports were played in ancient times and in coliseums,” said Strong, noting that the building’s exterior Romanesque architecture and interior massive marble columns are a natural backdrop for her art. Famous sayings of Vince Lombardi are also evident in the murals and throughout the Coliseum Bar and Grill — even on the menu. “The owner is a big Lombardi fan,” she said. The original tin ceiling also received a transformation. “I painted it to look as though it was gold-plated,” said Strong, adding that she created several other murals within the restaurant that depict local sports teams and the Wisconsin Badgers, Brewers, Packers and Bucks. “We can handle up to 150 people for groups,” Alexander said. While the Coliseum boasts a massive bar area with big screen televisions showcasing every sports event imaginable, the menu is also impressive. It goes beyond what a first-time diner might expect.
Full menu “A lot of people don’t realize we are a family restaurant serving a full menu that includes prime rib dinners, a Friday night fish fry and daily specials on both food and drinks,” Alexander said. While the hot-off-the-spit gyros are popular, so are the homemade pizzas, sandwiches, wraps and a host of salads such as the Greek Island, Taco, and Grilled Chicken salads. Coliseum dinner favorites include Baby Back Ribs, Steak Diane, Smothered Chicken Breast and Prime Rib to name a few. Italian favorites like Chicken Parmesan, Fettuccine Alfredo, and Spaghetti and Meatballs satisfy appetites as well. An extensive list of appetizers kicks off the menu selection, with a complimentary serving of salsa and chips brought to the table. Homemade soups, salads and potato choices abound. “Their gyros are awesome,” said Strong, noting that she has been equally impressed with the Coliseum’s Friday night seafood offerings. “The Coliseum’s perch and scallops and Peter’s homemade soups are the best.” Alexander says she’d like to make the public more aware of the vast menu and the fact the Coliseum caters to families. “Children are most welcome here. We even have electronic games that kids enjoy.” ■

for the Arts Our History Windhover Center for the Arts, formerly known as The Arts Center of Fond du Lac, held its Grand Opening on September 9, 2000 after completing a $2.2 million renovation. It all got started in 1994, when a group of community leaders concluded that Fond du Lac needed an organization to support, stimulate and advocate for the arts. With the establishment of the Arts Council, Fond du Lac joined the more than forty other Wisconsin cities that have initiated and supported active community arts agencies. In 1995 the Arts Council bought the former Masonic Temple at the northwest corner of Sheboygan and Marr

Fond du Lac and their 20,000 plus visitors (and growing!). Not willing to lose Windhover Center’s identity as a presenter of visual arts, executive director Kevin Miller and his team created the dynamic Great Hall Gallery located on the second floor. With its unique and flexible design, the Great Hall Gallery allows for world class performances as well as breath taking art exhibits. The inaugural exhibit celebrated the 150 years of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Agnes (CSA). Other exhibits have included historical perspectives of Mercury Marine, JF Ahern, Society Insurance, and a traveling display from Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 1996 the first full-time staff person was hired, and the Fond du Lac Arts Council began programming in earnest. Fond du Lac Children’s Chorale has been formed, children’s workshops in the areas of visual arts, music, drama and dance have been held, as well as several youth art exhibits. In addition to children’s activities, programs include a variety of adult classes, student and professional art exhibits, theatrical presentations and musical performances. The Searl Pickett Classical Music Series and Windhover Center’s Signature Series have struck a chord with local audiences.
Perhaps no other program defines this new era of Windhover vitality more that Windhover Wednesday. Live music and lunch that is now provided by the Elks Club held in the lower level now known as the Café Gallery.

Built in 1906, the building needed an updating of its infrastructure to current codes and safety standards. The renovation, totaling $2.2 million, was planned around maintaining and enhancing the distinctive character of the building. Needed improvements were to be unobtrusively integrated into the existing structure. This commitment to a sensitive restoration ensured the preservation of a singular downtown landmark.

Arts Center Renamed Windhover Center for the Arts The $500,000 donation by Harry and Betty Quadracci, through Quad/Graphics charitable branch, the Windhover Foundation was the largest single donation to the Fond du Lac Arts Council’s Capital Campaign. The donation put the project over the top, and also gave the Quadracci’s naming rights to the Arts Center. The Windhover, written by English poet Gerard Manley Hopkins in the late 1800’s, is a favorite poem of Harry Quadracci. It became the name of his company’s charitable foundation, and in the year 2000, the new name for the Arts Center of Fond du Lac.
