COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Richard E. Beattie ’92 Richard (Rich) Beattie is a 1992 graduate of Gannon University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. In addition, he holds a master’s degree in business administration. During his years at Gannon University, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and is a decorated combat veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Upon graduation, Beattie was hired by the Trane Company and began his career as a systems engineer designing applied HVAC systems. After completing a six-month graduate training program in Lacrosse, Wis., he was transferred to Maryland where he lives today. In 1995, he left the Trane Company to pursue his passion for construction. He was recruited by a large mechanical contracting firm as a project engineer. By 1998, he had risen to the position of vice president. In 2003, he resigned and founded Mechanical Engineering and Construction Corporation (MEC2). MEC2 is a design and construction firm headquartered in Maryland that serves the mid-Atlantic region of the country. The company constructs applied HVAC and controls systems to service the commercial, industrial and defense markets. MEC2 celebrated its 20th anniversary this August with its 165 employees. The firm is the recipient of dozens of awards for excellence in construction and was recognized nationally in 2016 for excellence in diversity. Outside his work, Beattie is heavily involved in workforce development efforts in Baltimore City. He has championed programs to create careers for formerly incarcerated individuals, those recovering from addictions and those who have simply fallen through the cracks of society. In addition to advocating changes in workforce hiring policies, his firm has hired and trained more than 30 individuals who are now licensed plumbers, pipefitters and sheet metal mechanics. Beattie was a recipient of Baltimore City’s Urban Visionary Award in 2018. Beattie credits his liberal arts education and student experience at Gannon as well as his time spent as a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity for helping to instill in him the importance of leadership. He has been a member of the Gannon Board of Trustees since 2016. He and his wife, Marie, have three children and live in the Baltimore area.

Academic Regalia in American Universities In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission presented to American institutions of higher learning the Intercollegiate Code. Today, this code provides for three types of gowns. Those for bachelors are made of black material and have long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is made with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape is a square cut and the front part has an arc cut-away. The doctor’s gown is made with bell-shaped sleeves and like the master’s gown, it is designed so that it can be worn open or closed. The black oxford cap is worn for all degrees, but only the doctor’s cap may be made of velvet. Only doctors and presidents of colleges may wear a gold tassel on the cap. It is the hood which is the most important and distinctive feature of the American code. The doctor’s hood, of black cloth, is four feet
in length and made with a wide panel. The master’s and bachelor’s hoods are three-andone-half feet long and three feet wide.
Arts, Letters, Humanities - White
The binding or trim of all hoods is of velvet, two, three and five inches wide for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively.
Engineering - Orange
The color of this velvet trim indicates the department or faculty to which the degree pertains, each department having been assigned a different color by the Intercollegiate Code. The lining of the hood reflects the official colors of the college/ university. Students who participated in a semester, summer, or internship abroad are wearing stoles representing the countries in which they studied or interned.

Academic Honor Cum laude is Latin for “with praise” or “with honor” and represents an academic level of achievement. Such honors are divided into categories based on a student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) and are designated throughout this program. Academic honors are approximated for commencement and may not reflect each student’s final honor designation upon program completion. See the undergraduate academic catalog for requirements to obtain the following academic honors.
Cum Laude (“with honor”) - GPA of at least 3.50 Magna cum Laude (“with great honor”) - GPA of at least 3.70 Summa cum Laude (“with highest honor”) - GPA of at least 3.90 With Academic Honors Associate Degree students with a GPA of at least 3.50
The Gannon University Seal The Gannon seal symbolizes the institution’s rich history and its Mission. The right side of the shield is proper to Gannon’s founder, Archbishop John Mark Gannon, who selected spiritual symbols for his Episcopal seal when he became a bishop. The three crosses in the upper right corner express faith in the Trinity.
The shield in the seal is surrounded by three ribbons, each of which contains a Latin word: sanitas, which means health; scientia, which means knowledge; and sanctitas, holiness. Gannon continues to embrace the spirit of these words through its focus on the holistic development of students. Finally, Latin letters that circle the seal honor that Gannon University was founded in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1925.
The left side of the shield includes the traditional symbols of education: the lamp of learning, the book of knowledge and the sun as a symbol of enlightenment. The waves refer to Gannon’s Erie, Pennsylvania and Ruskin, Florida campus locations adjacent to Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico. The sunburst in Gannon’s logo carries forward this tradition and symbolism of Gannon as a source of energy, optimism and enlightenment.
