Top 5 Copper-Based Technologies That Changed Human Life

Copper is the basic element that drives innovation in the world. It is not something that began a few years ago. Copper has always fuelled inventions for centuries and led to discovery and upgrade of new technologies. From Stone Age to Computer Age, copper has been a consistent member in the list of elements that was used extensively to improve designs, efficiency and performance.

Here are 5 copper-based technologies that changed the course of mankind and the way we live our life now. • Weapons of high durability • Surgical tools and medical technology • Drive around • Welcome to the Space age • Digital Age: Chips and the art of getting smaller Website: http://www.ganpatiengineering.com/

Weapons of high durability

Cave dwellers discovered copper pieces and attached them to wooden sticks. The first axe was made like this. It not only helped them in securing new places by cutting trees and clearing boulders, but also served as a hunting tool. New designs and upgrades in the way copper is engineered led to the preparation of advanced hand-held tools and weapons like swords, knives and dagger, ploughs and needle.

Surgical tools and medical technology

Copper wires and scalpel are important constituents of the medical technology. Earlier, the Bare copper wire and its alloys were used extensively to refit broken jaws, re-attach hips and support backbone. With time, surgical threads made of finer materials took over but the importance of copper in surgical process did not diminish. Today, copper-based scalpel is used as selfcauterizing tool as it conducts electric current and gets heated. It is also used in numerous diagnostic tools like CRT Machine, ECG and MRI scan tubes.

Drive around

Copper and steel play a significant role in the way we move around on the land. For centuries, copper wheels and rims were used in the chariots and sledges. When the 19th century turned around, the first bikes and cars came about relying heavily on copper, iron and bronze. The mechanical and electrical parts were made of stranded copper alloys. The paints and electrical parts were manufactured using electroplating techniques. Cars and trains use tinned and other insulated types of copper wires in motors and conductor units.

Welcome to the Space age

Aeronautics, aviations and space program also rely heavily on the way copper wires were manufactured. Engineering and chemical processes in the 20th century changed drastically owing to the control over optics and conductivity properties of various elements. Copper’s durability and malleability ensured that the stranded and braided copper wires could be used in smaller motors. It boosted the space programs and manned mission to Moon. Today, copper and optic fibre cables play a significant role in the electronic equipments used in space shuttles and rovers moving to the outer space.

Digital Age: Chips and the art of getting smaller

Copper is the core of micro-economics. It is the centre of nano-technology. Copper’s superlative conductivity is the prime reason why it fits perfectly in every innovation and novel technologies without a glitch. It requires hardly any major upgrade to be used in latest technologies. Today, all marketable chips are manufactured using copper as the base metal. Chop makers use copper rather than aluminium inter-connectors to link the transistors.
