5 residential design trends in hardwood Hardwood may be one of the oldest building materials known to man, yet architects, designers and homeowners are always finding fresh ways to use it in the modern home. What’s the appeal? Flexibility and variety, for starters. “We’re constantly delighted to see how traditional woods like oak and walnut are being employed with renewed flair and imagination,” says Linda Jovanovich, of the American Hardwood Information Center, www.hardwoodinfo.com. “Subtle tweaks can make something familiar, look innovative. The current trend is to take a classic hardwood application, like paneling or flooring, and give it a stylish, up-to-theminute twist. Here’s a look at what’s trending.”
Wide-plank flooring Perhaps no recent trend has been more influential than the use of wide-plank hardwood flooring. Traditional plank widths, ranging from 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches, are still popular. But today’s homeowners often ask for widths between 5 and 7 inches, and there is even demand for up to 10 or 12 inches. “Wider floorboards can make a space
look larger and more modern,” says Melissa Morgan of M Interiors in San Antonio, Texas, who has used the generously proportioned planks in traditional and contemporary homes. “With fewer seams, these floors can be treated like a canvas: ebonized oak or walnut for a sleek, dark look; light woods like ash or maple for a chic, urban vibe; weathered-gray tones for a slightly rustic affect — the possibilities are endless.”
Wood ceilings It used to be that hardwood planks primarily went on floors or walls, but today they’re appearing on residential ceilings too. “Simple poplar beadboard, painted white or with a light natural stain, looks crisp and airy overhead, adding visual interest while remaining quiet and unassuming,” says Rebecca Ascher, Ascher Davis Architects in New York and Newport, Rhode Island. “For a more assertive affect, I might specify tongue-and-groove walnut or hickory, characterful woods that provide a degree of drama. For that reason, they’re best reserved for large, high-ceilinged rooms that are not easily overwhelmed. In smaller, lower spaces, a ceiling with too much personality can feel oppressive.”

Mix and match Architects and designers, who once avoided using different varieties of hardwood in a single residential space, now mix and match them with newfound enthusiasm. eling and cabinetry.
This is particularly true in kitchens, where a favorite configuration features upper cabinetry in a light-color wood such as birch, and lower cabinetry in a dark-color wood like cherry. The result is a space that has strong visual interest, and is light and airy, yet solidly grounded.
“Whether light or dark, gray stains bring out any wood’s natural grain and texture,” says New York interior designer Laura Bohn. “Grays are versatile and timeless — quiet and soothing colors that recede into the background without losing personality or becoming faceless. That’s why they work in any style décor, yet always look modern.”

Bars are big Outdoor bars may increase your home value by nearly 14 percent, according to Realtor.com. Whether you’re thinking of adding a bar in tandem with your outdoor kitchen space, or want to expand your entertaining area, an outdoor bar requires a few basic elements.
4 ways to create an outdoor living space Today more than ever, homeowners are seeking ways to maximize the footprint of their home — both inside the four walls and out. Outdoor environments can serve many purposes and are a perfect way to customize a space that is right for you. As you consider creating a beautiful, yet functional outdoor area, here are some key elements to keep in mind:
Outdoor kitchens Whether you keep it simple with a built-in grill and some counter space or go grand with a brick pizza oven, an outdoor kitchen is becoming a must. In fact, according to Realtor.com, home buyers will pay a premium of more than 26 percent for a home with an outdoor kitchen. Many outdoor kitchens include a cooking area, sink, storage and refrigeration. As with your indoor kitchen, the faucet
outsdie can be the perfect marriage of beauty and function. You can find a variety of kitchen faucets from manufacturers such as Danze that fulfill all your outdoor needs. Need the ability to put water exactly where you want it in your outdoor workspace? A pulldown faucet from Danze offers great looks and exceptional versatility.
Media makes it way outdoors Many of the technology wonders you enjoy indoors are making their way into outdoor environments. From built-in flatscreen TVs that can stream video, to video gaming systems, Wi-Fi and surround sound, outdoor entertainment has gone high tech. Weather proofing and proper wiring are essential. Keep these critical aspects in mind while planning your outdoor space, and deciding what media you’ll incorporate and where it will be placed.
A fully operational sink with a high-functioning bar faucet are a go-to when it comes to outdoor bars. Storage for beverages and glassware, a drink chiller, ice storage and seating can make your outdoor entertaining area an envy in the neighborhood.
Room for relaxation While plenty of comfortable, attractive seating tend to be a significant part of outdoor living spaces, modern outdoor spaces are re-defining relaxation and entertainment. Homeowners are incorporating recreational elements such as ping pong and billiards tables, putting greens, hot tubs and infinity pools. Firepits and fireplaces are also popular for adding ambiance, and deliver the added bonus of extending the outdoor living season well into cooler months. Whether you choose to build a full-wall fireplace or stick with a more modest, portable firepit, adding heat and comfort to your outdoor space can also add value (upward of 21 percent according to Realtor.com). Outdoor living spaces offer a multitude of benefits and creative options. Even the simplest of designs can make a home feel larger, increase the property’s resale value and bring years of enjoyment.

Brines Many people use marinades to influence the flavor profiles of foods, but an alternative is gaining momentum: brines. Soaking meats like turkey and pork for up to a day in salt solutions not only adds flavor, but helps seal moisture into these lean foods. Customize a brine with chopped citrus fruit and herbs. Bitter vegetables, such as eggplant, can benefit from a dry brine made from course salt and other herbs.

“Interior designers use color psychology to evoke an emotional response,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “Homeowners can use this strategy to connect colors with emotions and memories to create one-of-a-kind spaces.” Color psychology starts by exploring warm and cool hues and then using these different tones to manipulate mood throughout your home. It’s easy to do with the tips below.
Warm color families Red, orange and yellow are considered warm colors since they are associated with images of heat, like fire or sunshine. Warm families of color are bold and powerful when incorporated into home design. Yellows Because yellow reflects light, it’s an excellent choice for foyers and dark hallways. Its cheery nature has the ability to create an uplifting mood in homes. Rich yellows are great accent colors because they catch the eye. A great color to consider is Wadden’s favorite: Butterscotch SW 6377. “This color isn’t for the faint of heart,” she says. “The color features an acidy, deep mustard feel but is a great accent color paired with neutrals. I find its pop can really spark up a room.” Reds Reds evoke feelings of passion, energy and intimacy, so it’s an excellent color for workout rooms and master bedrooms. Red also inspires the appetite, so is a logical choice for dining rooms or kitchens. Michael Plank, director of color 20 LIFE & STYLE

marketing and design services for Sherwin-Williams, enjoys Chinese Red SW0057. “Chinese Red is one of my perennial favorites to play off dark stains with its saturated and sophisticated nature,” he says. “Rich in hue as it is in Chinese culture; the harbinger of joy and fortune.” Oranges Orange has a friendly attitude that awakens and welcomes. Never understated, orange works well in family rooms and is a playful choice for children’s bedrooms or bonus rooms. Orange tones can also integrate into other colors, such as Coral Reef SW6606. “Ever since I was little I had a love affair with orange,” says Wadden. “I painted my daughter’s room Coral Reef. I love the rich complexity of the color.”
bedrooms and bathrooms. Alternatively, blues should be kept out of the kitchen because it’s a color that’s associated with appetite suppression. “I love cool greenish blues,” says Plank. “Blue Sky 0063 is from our historic palette and is a calming hue that works in virtually every room.” Greens Green tones provide a feeling of familiarity because they are found throughout nature. Light greens are ideal for living rooms and offices; dark greens are wonderfully rich as accent colors. Vivid greens add unexpected pop, notes Sherwin-Williams Senior designer Karrie Hodge, who likes Marea Baja SW 9185. “I really like dark colors and this color reminds me of the deep turquoise part of the ocean,” she says. “This would make a great front door color on a white or gray colored house. This color would pair well with some natural stone or brick or wood.” Violets Purple tones are immediately attractive to children, making them a great paint option in playrooms or bonus rooms. Additionally, violet is also a stunning accent color in bathrooms.
Cool color families
When it comes to the violet family of colors, Hodge likes the versatility of Veri Berri SW 9069.
Blue, green and violet are considered cool colors because the inherent tones of each shade. Reminiscent of water and the outdoors, cool colors stimulate feelings of peace and tranquility, and are great options for bedrooms, bathrooms and patio spaces.
“Its a rich berry tone that is playful,” she says. “This would make a really dramatic accent wall color in any room; I could even see this as a really fresh front door color.”

A DIY project should make your life easier and more enjoyable. These are some top recommended DIY projects for first-time homeowners. They won’t break the bank but they will deliver a bang for your buck.
4. Update your closets. Add built-in shelving or simply streamline clothes hangers for an organizational boost you’ll thank yourself for every day. Or you can tackle a popular closet upgrade: lining a traditional closet with cedar. Natural cedar looks great, smells great and keeps moths and mildew away. It’s a classic and high-end upgrade that’s not terribly expensive or time-intensive. When your friends or family open your closet, they will be pleasantly surprised.
1. Add crown molding or update casing and trim. The addition of crown molding to the top of interior walls is a subtle change with big impact. Casing, which is the trim around doors and windows, can also make a huge difference. The replacement of dated crown molding, casing or trim can make a room look newly updated. Go one step further with a fresh coat of paint on the walls, and you’ll basically have an entirely new room. 2. Replace doors. Doors are often forgettable, but don’t have to be. Replace hollow core bedroom, bathroom and closet doors with wood alternatives for an instant dash of richness. And don’t limit yourself to traditionally-styled options. From specialty woods to glass panels, there are plenty of options to choose from. 3. Clean and refinish your wood deck. From an urban industrial loft to a sleek beach house, the versatility of modern design can morph to match a variety of environments. Whether you prefer raw spaces and reclaimed materials or crisp lines and minimal embellishment, there’s a modern flavor to fit your personal style. European minimalism
Bold contemporary
Synonymous for simplicity and functionality, European minimalism is well versed in the notion of less is more. Clean lines and simple ornamentation allow for an open, natural flow, while a muted color scheme and light wood floors create the foundation of a calming space. The neutral palette is balanced with rich textures, mixed materials and natural lighting to invite guests in without offering overwhelming distractions.
Bold contemporary is an eye-catching twist on modern design. Coupled with a neutral backdrop, contemporary design details - such as pops of color or geometric shapes - bring a space to life. Warm finishes offer a contrast to a cool black-and-white palette, while organic elements, such as air plants or bamboo, keep the space from becoming too stark. Incorporating textured gold tones, such as the Brizo Brilliance Luxe Gold finish, against a monochromatic background delivers a sophisticated take on modern design. Faucets, fittings and accessories in this same finish help create a cohesive, bold look throughout the space.
Unfinished industrial Drawing inspiration from factories and warehouses, exposed brick, reclaimed wood and unfinished metals deliver a functionally minimal aesthetic. This design approach strips spaces down to their bare essence and brings structural components to the foreground. Incorporating sleek fixtures with purposeful details brings a modern sentiment to a vintage space. With a simplistically beautiful bent tube spout, the Litze Bath Collection by Brizo exemplifies the fusion of creativity and manufacturing. Thoughtful details such as three distinctive handle options and textural knurling accents throughout the collection denote stunning craftsmanship with an industrial feel. 28 LIFE & STYLE

Urban Zen Minimalist in design, urban Zen utilizes the simplicity of clean lines and a warm neutral color palette to provide a serene, quiet home design. Infused with natural materials, this modern design approach brings the outdoors inside with elements such as rock tiled showers, bamboo flooring or stone sinks. Soft colors such as cream, taupe, gray and gold complement the natural materials to deliver a soothing spa-like experience.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Clean up your beauty routine’s dirty secrets Whether you are heading to a backyard barbeque or a summer soiree, a healthy, glowing complexion is the best accessory this summer. Everyone knows the drill about proper skin cleansing and moisturizing regimens, however, many women are interfering with their skin health by not taking the same care when it comes to their beauty products. “Keeping skin looking radiant is no small feat,” says Stacey Ramstedt, senior director of marketing at Paris Presents Incorporated, a global leader in beauty products and personal care accessories. “Women are careful about the makeup and products they use on their skin, but overlook the importance of maintaining those products for optimal use and skin health.”
Never washing makeup brushes A whopping 43 percent of makeup brush users report they never wash their makeup brushes, according to a 2014 quantitative online survey among 212 makeup brush users. Brushes not only collect makeup residue, but they also hold dirt, oil and other impurities. A regular maintenance routine ensures brushes are clean when they touch your skin, plus it boosts brush performance
and integrity so they last longer. Cleaning makeup brushes does not have to be a time-consuming chore. For daily cleaning and quick color changes, try EcoTools Makeup Brush Cleansing Cloths. They help keep your brushes fresh and conditioned. For a weekly deeper clean, use EcoTools Makeup Brush Shampoo to get your brushes back to new. Both are made from plantbased ingredients and are dermatologist tested so they are safe for sensitive skin.
Using expired makeup Similar to the kale salad you had for lunch, your makeup comes with an expiration date. While it may not give a specific “use by” date, the general rule is to replace mascara and eyeliners every three months, liquid foundation every six months and powder eyeshadow every two years. We all struggle with letting go, with 89 percent of women hanging on to makeup just in case they need it later, according to a Stowaway Cosmetics survey. Which means at best makeup will be poor-performing, and at worst, it can bring bacteria to the skin and eyes, causing irritation. Keep in mind, the more often you use the product, especially with your fin-
gers, the more often you should replace it.
Relying on products to include your sun protection It is no secret that sunscreen helps maintain skin health. By blocking dangerous ultraviolet rays, sunscreen is a key tool to protect the skin against cancer and premature aging. Recognizing the benefits, most face lotions and products on the market today include a sunscreen ingredient. But be cautious, similar to the products in your makeup bag, sunscreens do not last forever and should be replenished. While sunscreens are designed to remain at original strength for up to three years, according to the Mayo Clinic, the sunscreen ingredients in your favorite face products may not last as long. In fact, facial moisturizers and serums should be tossed after six months to a year. Be on the lookout for PAO (Period After Opening) notations on new products or look for a number followed by an M to tell you how many months after opening the product should be tossed. To be safe, be sure to use an oilfree high SPF face sunscreen after your moisturizer to provide any extra level of protection all summer long.

about winning the day,” she says. “As a professional athlete, my workouts every day are difficult. It’s all about taking baby steps and really looking at one step at a time and setting individual goals for the day.”

dealing with a chronic disease. Focus on things that you love about yourself, practice positive affirmations, and take the time to do things that make you feel good.
Staying intimate with chronic illness Creating and sustaining both emotional and physical intimacy in any relationship can be difficult. For people living with a chronic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) — an autoimmune disease of the joints that affects 1.6 million people in the United States — it can be even more challenging. In fact, a study of those living with RA revealed that more than half feel that their disease places limitations on intimacy and more than a third say that living with RA has strained their relationship with their partner. For many people, browsing the selfhelp section of a book store, an internet search, or picking up a women’s magazine can help provide some suggestions for how to build or repair intimacy. However, for those with RA, help and advice is more limited and there’s a real need for support for those with a chron-
ic disease looking to address intimacy challenges. So, let’s start here. The best first step to addressing any challenge — whether it’s related to RA or not — is to take a look at it from a higher perspective and evaluate the bigger picture. When we step back and look at relationship “issues,” the first thing we realize is that when it comes to relationships, “normal” doesn’t exist. There is no one way to define a healthy relationship. Once you’ve accepted that there is no “normal,” you can start to focus on redefining your relationships in the face of a chronic disease, like RA. Here are a few tips that may help address intimacy with RA: Focus on self-love. While it can be difficult to love yourself when it feels like you are fighting against your body, it is even more important to exercise healthy self-love behaviors when
Communicate with your partner. An open dialogue is a critical component to intimacy - both physically and emotionally. Communicating openly and honestly paves the way for a feeling of closeness that comes from shared expectations and understanding. It’s also important to know that intimacy doesn’t require physicality, and if there are times you can’t be physical due to RA symptoms such as fatigue or swollen joints — that’s okay as long as you are open and honest with your partner. Work as a team. There are times in every relationship when each person faces his or her own challenges. You and your partner are in this together. You are each other’s advocates. Maintaining a healthy and successful relationship is all about balance and understanding that challenges come in all shapes and forms. Living with RA is no exception. Talk to a professional. If your RA symptoms are inhibiting your relationship, talk to a professional. The right professional probably has some good ideas of how to address the impact on intimacy. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your rheumatologist, try speaking with someone who specializes in intimate relationships such as a relationship counselor or sex therapist. 4 ways to make your hotel feel like home After a few weeks of staying in hotels, you let out a sigh of relief as you walk through the front door of your home. As someone who travels for work, whether it be for relocation, training or sales, you know the feeling of coming home after a long trip — but you should also feel comfortable when you’re away. While you’ll always enjoy returning to your family and home, you don’t have to feel uncomfortable for weeks at a time during your extended trip. These four tips help you make your hotel experience feel more like home, and your overall trip more enjoyable.
Choose a suite to get more space. Unlike typical hotel rooms, suites offer multiple rooms including a living room, kitchen and separate bathroom so it’s more like an apartment. When you stay in a suite, you’re less likely to feel cramped and you have the space to
make it a bit more personal with your own touches.
Avoid eating out for every meal. During business trips, many travelers are forced to eat out or order room service for every meal, but this can make you feel sluggish after just a few days. When you stay in a suite with a full kitchen, you can prepare your own meals as you would at home. Candlewood Suites hotels offer accommodations with a full kitchen including a refrigerator, stovetop, microwave and most importantly, a dishwasher. You can easily stay on your routine with healthy meals and make your favorite dishes. Additionally, Candlewood Suites properties offer the Lending Locker, where you can borrow items like a blender or crockpot to make your favorite items.

It’s hard to feel at home when you’re living out of a suitcase. To make your suite feel like your own personal space, unpack clothes in drawers and closets, put away toiletries in the bathroom and store belongings like books in the nightstand. After you’re all unpacked, you’ll be able to relax more easily in your temporary home. If you’re traveling for long time, you’ll eventually need to tackle your laundry as well. Candlewood Suites hotels provide free washing machines and dryers for guests to use which means you can conveniently take care of your laundry without ever leaving the hotel.
Personalize your space. On short weekend trips, it makes sense to pack light. But, when you’re in a new city for weeks or even months at a time, it’s better to bring along more than just clothes and shower essentials. Personal touches, like family pictures, sports memorabilia and fresh plants can dramatically improve your space and feel more like your own. Some guests even like to bring their own bedspreads or wall art to make their suite feel like home. Nothing can replace home, but a comfortable suite can at least come close. To learn more about apartment-style suites and how you can book one for your next extended trip, visit www. candlewoodsuites.com/business today.
