BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Our client had purchased a new build property with a compact rear garden. The developers had laid the garden with artificial lawn and a number of traditional shrubs were planted. However, our client wanted a garden that would make the most of the open plan kitchen and become a real extension of the interior when the bifold doors were open, as well as looking attractive all year round.

The design we developed was set around a feature wall, the inspiration came from a very minimal photograph on our client’s initial wish list. Corten steel effect cladding is used to dress the wall and matching Corten effect Urbis pots are planted with small olive trees, to add another simple detail. We designed a bench with the appearance of being supported by the feature wall, floating above low maintenance evergreen plants. Cladding the existing fence with horizontal battens and use of a bold, deep blue that the client had chosen for a feature interior wall, enabled us to push the sense of space outwards. A water feature, incorporated into the fence, sits slightly further back than the feature wall, adding depth and also the opportunity for detail that is picked up by the lighting scheme in the evening. Beige paving was selected for the surfacing and a row of riven sandstone planks of varying colours add texture and contrast.

This small garden is not only a valuable extension of living space, but is a fantastic addition of atmosphere and detail, which has significantly enhanced the look and feel of this new build property. The bespoke features and low maintenance planting sit comfortably in the space and whilst there are a lot of elements to the design, each one has been carefully considered and the features curated in a way that makes the garden feel spacious and light.

The garden we inherited in our new build home was a small, soulless space. We briefed Garden Club London to transform this – to take the inside out, and to make this a seamless extension of our dining / living area. The result has been more than this – we now have a stunning garden to relax in, vibrant with living colour and planting texture, set with uniquely designed and sourced features, that realises a truly exceptional, sophisticated “room” for all seasons. FULHAM SLIM & SUBTLE BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Our client wanted a contemporary look, with pale tones to complement the interior of the property, an outdoor dining area large enough to seat eight or ten friends, plenty of low maintenance greenery and storage space.

The design uses raised beds around two sides of the rear garden, to bring a range of planting off the ground and facilitate built in seating, that doubles as hidden storage for outdoor tools and candles. A bespoke table uses rustic timber, creating a dining surface with character, whilst slim metal legs add to the sense of space. A matching bespoke bench provides additional seating for when friends visit. Painted horizontal cladding creates a light yet warm finish, providing a sense of continuity, despite the change in levels from house to garden.

The design has created new areas for planting, seating and storage in a way that has opened up a very difficult and previously rarely used space. The planting is subtle, using a base of shades of green to create a calming effect with a strong contrast against the boundaries.

Whilst we had a clear vision for the inside of our new home, we were at somewhat of a loss as to what to do with our small garden space. After some research online looking for a designer specialising in making the most of small spaces we found Garden Club London. We loved the look and feel of the gardens pictured in GCL’s portfolio, with the mixture of contemporary structural elements combined with the softer planting. We are so happy with the end result, we keep finding ourselves wanting to sit outside whatever the weather! Tony was able to transform our uninspiring rectangular ‘box’ into a wonderful calming place to sit and enjoy. We had very clear requirements for the garden – we wanted a contemporary look with pale tones, an outside dining area for hosting friends, plenty of low maintenance greenery to add some character as well as some practical storage. Tony incorporated all these elements in to the design, mixing formal elements with some more relaxed planting and shapes whilst working to within our budget. The end result is a relaxing, private space to sit outside and feel as though you can escape from it all! I would definitely recommend Garden Club London to friends looking for a high quality garden design service. ALEX B, FULHAM

WANDSWORTH OUTDOOR ROOM BRIEF

Previously, the garden had been landscaped in a very generic form, with a textbook design layout that offered little connection to the interior and made the garden appear a lot smaller than it is. Our client asked us to explore how we could marry the contemporary kitchen extension and large expanse of glass with the garden, in a way that would provide a more useable space for outdoor cooking, relaxing and dining. SOLUTION

Firstly, we needed to start by thinking about the space as a blank canvas and remove the numerous features included in the previous scheme. The garden had a number of attractive plants, however, because of the way the planting beds had been built, they had lost their shape or started to block the light. We presented various options for the paving in the garden and our client settled on

OUTCOME

light colours, sandstone ‘planks’ that would push the garden outwards by being laid in a stretcher bond pattern across the layout. A small area of lawn was retained for our client’s dog to enjoy and we used Namgrass Green Elise artificial lawn that provides a practical, permeable solution for ground cover. A built- in timber bench allows planting beneath to soften its appearance and provide further interest to the soft landscaping scheme. An evergreen multi-stemmed tree, planted for structural interest, hides the barbecue from the main line of sight from the house. There are delicate herbaceous perennials including Astrantia, Erigeron and Brunnera, along with flowering and structural shrubs such as Hydrangea, Garrya and Buxus balls. Our client chose a ‘Big Green Egg’ housed in a contemporary, polished concrete ‘WWOO’ kitchen unit, that we had custom built in the Netherlands, to provide a versatile cooking solution and outdoor kitchen.

From all angles of the garden and internally from the kitchen and lounge area, the new garden design is a seamless extension of the interior. A row of evergreen trees offers much needed privacy from the windows of the properties behind. With light and character, this garden has been carefully designed to provide a balance between the hard landscaping elements and the planting. It is easy to enjoy the garden with the bi-folding doors open whilst working from home or hosting dinner and drinks for friends in the outdoor kitchen area. The steps have been adjusted to allow additional cushions and seating, to accommodate for those bigger summer gatherings and special occasions.

CHISWICK MODERN CLASSIC BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Our client approached us to develop a design that would transform their garden into a series of areas for entertaining, relaxing and dining. The garden had to have character, maximise the sense of space and feel calming.

The view through the garden is broken up by planting accommodated in raised beds and at ground level. Two water features, using contemporary water blades, have been incorporated and the sound of water draws you into the garden, whilst providing a stunning lighting effect in the evening. We created a focal point with an existing sculpture and added privacy with established ‘umbrella’ trees and evergreen hedging. Each area of seating is individually considered and introduced with generous planting. A bespoke outdoor kitchen area was designed and built, with the addition of an adjacent herb garden to provide for the large barbecue.

This rear garden provides the perfect sanctuary for our clients who love to entertain and cook outdoors. Flowers fill the garden through the seasons and layers of greenery provide structure and add to the sense of calm. The series of ‘rooms’ gives each area a slightly different feel and whilst the garden includes many features from a kitchen to water features, it retains a sense of space and the view flows from the interior through to the main focal point.

Contemporary battens with a neutral finish offer an attractive backdrop and allow scented Jasmine to climb and soften the boundaries. Comfortable seating on each side of the garden enables the homeowners to take advantage of the sun throughout the day, before enjoying the dining space adjacent to the kitchen for al fresco lunches and dinner parties.

PUTNEY CLASSIC COURTYARD BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

This client’s brief was to work with the main structural elements already in place, but to explore how the terraced garden could be integrated and feel more open and inviting from the enclosed lower levels. The new garden scheme needed to be traditional without feeling dated and contain cottage garden favourites, which would also include keeping and renovating one of the established shrubs and climbing roses. Our client enjoys gardening, however, the workload needed to be minimised where possible, whilst keeping an engaging, seasonal planting palette.

The first step to making the space integrate more with the other levels was to widen and add depth to the narrow steps that made the upper level feel higher than it actually was. We used a traditional sandstone for all of the surfaces and inlaid a circle detail using smaller sandstone setts. As the garden is also viewed from above, we added curved raised beds to define the subtle circle in the scheme and to lift foliage away from the ground. A reproduction lead water trough is fed from a lead mask, providing a calming trickle of water. Traditional style trellis in soft sage green offers privacy and a support for the climbing roses. To further lighten the garden and add depth, a mirror was placed behind a section of trellis, to subtly reflect other views of the planting.

The larger format steps push the feeling of depth and widen the entire space visually, harmonising the levels. A traditional Boxwood hedge is used along the top of the brick wall introducing greenery to the lower parts of the garden and softening the view from the kitchen window. Seasonal flowers occupy the garden from early spring right through to October. A balanced structure of evergreen plants offers year-round interest from all view points, with added winter interest coming from Camellias and Hellebores.

CLAPHAM MODERN SANCTUARY OUTCOME

BRIEF

We were delighted to receive the brief for this detached property in Clapham, with a generous sized rear garden. Despite the urban location, the garden is very private and has a mature Cherry tree. Our client wanted us to explore how we could retain the tree and existing block walls without them feeling too dominant. An outdoor kitchen area, terrace and seating for relaxation were all required, along with interesting planting that would provide structure throughout the year. SOLUTION

Our proposal retained the existing cherry tree and a planting design was formulated to integrate it into the new garden by using tall grasses and multi-stem evergreen trees, creating a range of heights. To get the most from the abundant cherry blossom, we planted hundreds of bulbs in five different tones of pink and white to firmly mark the arrival of spring. The planting then mellows as the tree comes into leaf and spring turns into summer. Cream and green flower

CASE STUDY |

tones from Hydrangea, Jasmine and Allium sit proudly against natural timber and Farrow & Ball ‘Railings’ colour on the rear boundaries. We renovated and repurposed a feature wall to include an outdoor fireplace, whilst the decision was taken to remove the other raised beds and walls that made the garden feel closed in and provided little interest. A versatile outdoor kitchen unit built in cedar integrates seamlessly with the chosen boundary material and a solid granite work surface allows a practical and hard wearing work surface for the gas barbecue and food preparation. A carefully considered lighting scheme uses various types of light fitting to provide warmth and shadows around the garden, whilst allowing the homeowner to create different feature lighting moments, depending on the mood or occasion.

Looking at the before and after images of the garden shows just how much value has been added to the space, but also how we have worked with existing features to make an already generous budget deliver as much as possible for our client, without compromising on quality or aesthetic. The outdoor fireplace provides a stunning backdrop to the carefully chosen planting palette. Summer evenings can be enjoyed around a generously sized dining table, as food is prepared on the outdoor kitchen unit, before relaxing on the raised hardwood deck in front of the fire as the evening closes in and the garden lighting completes the atmosphere as dusk falls.

Tony and his team transformed my sad garden in Clapham into a year-round source of delight. Carefully chosen flowers bloom in sequences throughout the seasons, while a set of small trees brighten up the worst winter days. They tastefully redesigned the area, providing expert advice not just on plants but on material, lay out, outdoor furniture, extra features like outdoor fireplace, barbecue. Work was carried out meticulously and professionally, and we appreciated their guidance with our new outdoor space well after the project was completed. GUILLAUME H, CLAPHAM

RICHMOND URBAN OASIS BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Our client’s brief was simple, to create a garden that felt modern, yet immersed in foliage and specifically they wanted to include tree ferns. The space needed to have a good-sized entertaining space and provide a stunning canvas of year- round, visual impact from the open plan living and kitchen area. Storage for two bikes was a must.

The design uses approximately 60% of hard surface and 40% planting coverage and is laid out as a series of deck ‘pads’ varying in height to create a visual and physical journey through the garden. Varying sizes and heights of the tree ferns, Dicksonia antarctica, are used to accentuate the effect of depth through the space. Natural finish Western Red Cedar battens age gracefully to a subtle grey, giving a mellow, contemporary back drop to the dramatic planting. A practical bike storage unit is hidden behind a horizontal timber screen, seamlessly blending into the contemporary fence cladding around the garden. Reclaimed scaffold boards offer strong geometric lines for the decking and seating, whilst providing age and character to the scheme.

This previously blank space now offers an outdoor extension of the home and a practical garden for entertaining as well as storage. It is filled with atmosphere and even from the front door as you glimpse through the house you are drawn to discover the garden. The impact of the foliage provides a stunning back drop to the modern extension through the glass doors of the kitchen. In the day time, gentle breezes animate the planting and at night, soft lighting shows off the dramatic canopies of the tree ferns.

BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Set on the River Lea, this beautiful property is surrounded by water on three sides and has a generous sized garden that wraps all the way around. Our client asked us to produce a scheme that borrows from the landscape and provides different zones and rooms around the property, including a kitchen garden, flower garden, lawns and terrace.

The garden is set in a stunning position, however, the site is very angular and slims disproportionately in some areas. The design is based around a central circular lawn, surrounded by densely planted borders. In one direction an arch and winding path leads you to the kitchen garden and off to a waterside jetty, through a reclaimed clay brick path. In the opposite direction, another arch leads you to a circular terrace, enclosed by tall grasses and airy flowering perennial plants. This forms the main dining area in the garden adjacent to the kitchen. Following the path around the property you arrive at a comfortable seating area of outdoor sofas, set on a sandstone terrace overlooking an expanse of calm water.

The garden has a sense of seclusion and makes the most of waterside vistas. The planting is densely arranged to provide an abundance of summer colour, with stems and seed heads adding structure in the winter. Various zones create a sense of adventure and surprise throughout the garden and provide lots of flexible seating areas, from sun loungers to outdoor dining. The open lawn creates a sense of space and allows the planting to be appreciated in its different forms, as the light and aspect of the garden change.

URBAN DARK & LIGHT BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

A young professional client gave us an open brief for the design of this compact urban garden, with the only remit being that he needed to have plants that had impact but were easy to care for and a generous amount of seating for entertaining friends.

A scheme was developed giving the previously very tired garden a fresh look, that would be modern and low maintenance. Dark boundaries with contemporary batten fencing was used to enlarge the garden all the way around and to provide a contrasting backdrop for silver and green leaved architectural plants. The surfacing was redesigned using hard wearing, low maintenance slate. A stacking set of chairs allows extra seating, whilst being able to be hidden in the side return when not needed, to keep a simple and uncluttered feel to the garden.

The garden gives a striking yet soft backdrop from the interior of the house and the evergreen planting, including Astelia, Phormium and Olive, provides year-round interest and structure. A lighting design provides soft feature uplighting and down lighting of the more architectural plants, allowing extended use of the space in summer evenings. The slate paving is practical and can be easily cleaned after parties and barbecues, ensuring the garden will look its best for as long as possible.

I would describe Garden Club London as an exceptional business. The transformation of my garden and their creativity and professionalism would be hard to surpass – highly recommended! STEPHEN L, WANDSWORTH

BALHAM CONTEMPORARY BRIEF

For this small rear garden in Balham, we were asked to completely transform the tired and dilapidated garden area into a contemporary entertaining space, whilst ensuring it still felt warm and inviting. Low maintenance planting and plentiful seating were top of the agenda for our busy professional client. SOLUTION

The garden is small but a perfectly average size for this area of SW London. However, the rear boundary’s height is above average as the buildings behind are built on higher ground. Whereas this boundary previously felt quite enclosing, we used the space to form a crisp backdrop by using natural finish Western Red Cedar battens laid horizontally. We then continued these

OUTCOME

strong, simple lines around the whole of the garden to give the effect of a larger space, that also seamlessly integrates the changing levels. To keep on budget, we saved existing boundaries that could be repaired and painted them with soft neutral shades of exterior paint, to lighten the side return and neighbouring boundary. A simple retaining bed, constructed from block and render, supports a floating effect ‘L’ shape bench, providing flexible space for drinks or dinner parties. Evergreen planting, using different leaf colours and shapes, offers architectural interest throughout the year, including Pittosporums, Phormium and scented Trachelospermum.

The garden has been completely transformed and now provides a visually stunning exterior space from all viewpoints, including the kitchen, lounge and bedrooms. The seating is plentiful but forms a key feature that does not clutter the garden. The sawn beige sandstone and Western Red Cedar complement the period property whilst providing a warm, contemporary finish to the space.

BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

This show garden is based on a typical sized, urban rear garden, designed for clients with children in their mid-teens. Overlooked, it requires solutions to provide privacy, whilst not blocking light. A visually attractive permeable paving provides a low maintenance surface to accommodate a dining area and outdoor kitchen. The garden caters for a family wanting the opportunity to grow their own salad, fruit and veg in a compact and low maintenance format.

Viewing the garden from the glass doors at the rear of the property, a water feature, sits amongst evergreen and seasonal planting offering year-round interest. An oversized steel effect arch creates a framed view and divides the space, affording privacy to the open plan kitchen from overlooking loft conversion windows and balconies. Handmade clay bricks form permeable paving and laser cut Corten steel has been used to create a cantilever pergola structure, providing further privacy and intricate shadows throughout the dining area. A contemporary concrete kitchen and edible living wall complete the practical outdoor room and allow space to grow your own in a manageable format.

The garden design has created an intimate yet light urban living space outdoors, with lounge and dining furniture to provide a place to relax and an area for family and friends to come together, cook and dine outside. Sumptuous deep and velvety planting gives a luxurious finish to the scheme and softens the hard landscape features, with a range of heights using ornate and colourful foliage. The garden is brought alive at night with the use of lighting that casts shadows and adds a warm glow to the detail finishes in the space. This project won an RHS Gold Medal and was nominated Best Space to Grow Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show 2018.

BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Escape to the City was a show garden with a brief to provide a garden using recycled materials, encourage wildlife and use pioneering ways of growing plants and conserving water. Our garden was specifically designed for an urban homeowner who had grown up in the countryside and wanted a feel of the planting styles and materials found at home, whilst living in London.

The garden uses reclaimed timber to create a large deck for relaxing and entertaining, with access from a path made with recycled granite cobbles. A combination of nectar rich and edible plants flow across the ground level, mulched with recycled crushed brick to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Fruit, vegetables and salad spill from reclaimed galvanised farm troughs, providing a manageable source of organic home grown produce. Reclaimed box profile rusty columns, salvaged from a nearby factory, are used vertically as a privacy screen and reflect in Corten steel water cubes that collect rain water.

By using simple geometry, the design provides a number of zones that comfortably sit together, using different planting suited to the light levels in each area. The living wall helps to pack even more planting into the garden and forms a stunning backdrop to the cantilevered benches. The garden won Best in Category, Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal and Tony Woods won the RHS Young Designer of the Year Award for the design.

SHOREDITCH PENTHOUSE ROOF TERRACE BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Our clients were undertaking the renovation of their converted warehouse penthouse that included building a pavilion style extension. The extension is a fantastic highlight of the property and our clients wanted a roof top garden space that would complement the contemporary interior and flow with the architecture. A dining, cooking, lounging area and privacy were all in the remit for transforming the wrap around space.

We used a pedestal and joist system to support an oak effect, non-slip ‘Millboard’ decking, with a light finish that flows effortlessly with the interior surfaces. Working with our bespoke planter suppliers, we trialled a number of concrete-effect finishes in GRP (glass reinforced plastic), before selecting one to give a slightly industrial yet modern finish contrasting against deep green foliage and a peppering of punchy flowers. The planters were designed to hide various services on the roof at staggered depths and heights and to accommodate a range of plants that suit the various conditions around the three terrace areas.

The three areas of this roof terrace now have slightly different atmospheres, yet maintain a consistent and contemporary look throughout. The seating areas feel secluded and cosy without losing the sense of place and rooftop atmosphere. A range of plants and flowers provide year-round interest, including herbs for cooking outdoors. The hardwearing surfaces add character and depth to the space and will stand the test of time. A very special space that is a valuable addition to the client’s property and lifestyle.

BELSIZE PARK LUSH COURTYARD BRIEF

Our client asked us to transform their dark, cluttered yard and create a simple, yet visually stunning, view out of the glass doors of their small terraced house in Belsize Park. With two young children, they wanted a safe and practical surface, storage and as much open space as possible, without compromising on the density of foliage and flowers needed to make the space feel lush and green. SOLUTION

We developed a design removing all of the different levels and materials that made the space feel small and dark. Composite deck was introduced as a hard wearing surface with a natural colour. The design lays the boards diagonally to add interest and a visual feeling of space. As native New Zealanders, our clients were keen to include tree ferns, Dicksonia antarctica, which are perfectly suited to this shady spot. We planted the tree

CASE STUDY |

ferns in raised Corten steel planters to lift them off the ground, allowing space to walk past and shadows and light to bounce beneath the architectural leaves. The focal point of the whole scheme is a bespoke Corten steel wall, planted with a variety of shade tolerant foliage, with various leaf shapes and colours. Our inspiration was drawn from geometric forms and rock faces. We looked at how we could develop the idea to make both plants and a visually strong material provide a sustainable and stunning feature wall, that also plays with depth, so the space feels a little bigger. Finally, we integrated storage for toys into a large Western Red Cedar ‘trunk’ bench, that doubles as comfortable seating with lots of cushions for relaxation. The barbecue is freestanding, so that it can be moved as required.

This small urban space is now a warm and inviting extension of the interior and makes the whole ground floor of the property appear bigger and brighter, whilst providing year-round interest. The strong geometry of the feature wall is softened by the planting and creates a stunning feature when viewed from inside and out. The garden boundaries have been harmonised by using a bold paint colour and contemporary cladding.
