New Year’s Day
from the CEO After a hot summer and
a very warm fall, who wouldn’t be excited about the Galaxy of Lights coming and winter just around the corner? Just as it has for the past 22 years, the Galaxy volunteer crew has been hard at work designing, relighting, and setting up the best display yet! That’s exactly what makes Galaxy so spectacular and unique. We have been so fortunate that this team is committed to making the exhibit and the guest experience better, each and every year. Together with our staff, they conduct wrap-up meetings and tweak all that’s “tweakable.” Last year, with Sandy Hovde as our Galaxy of Lights Chairman and Bob Hovde as our Galaxy crew chief, it’s no wonder that we had amazing results. Together, they tackled the impact of the new Propst Guest Center and maximized all possibilities, making the walking nights beyond our expectations. We hosted 35,454 guests, a 43% increase over the previous year, PLUS 2,072 dogs on the two dog walking nights! Much to our surprise, three of those nights had more than 5,000 guests. As always, we are committed to providing the best guest experience for all, so this year we have set up the ability to presell tickets for our walking nights. As a member, you have the opportunity FIRST to select your choice evening and buy tickets before you come. We are asking all guests to do that as well, to alleviate the ticket lines and control the number of attendees each night. The walking nights are a special experience and we don’t want you to feel overcrowded as you enjoy your stroll through the lights. There are more details on the website. Remember the Shoppe at the Garden as well as gift memberships for all those on your list. I also want to thank you personally for your support throughout this year as we have worked through many changes together to make the Garden the very best it can be! We hope that you make us a part of your season’s celebration and have a Happy New Year!

horticulture Winterberry Holly
notes from the garden
garden calendar things you could or should be doing in your garden… NOVEMBER Plan fruit and nut tree plantings. Start mulching strawberries and other tender perennials. Now is the time to plant shrubs, trees, and vines. Use pre-emergent herbicide to prevent germinating winter weeds in established beds and lawns. Get spring-blooming bulbs in the ground. Make indoor plantings of amaryllis, callas, and gloxinias.
DECEMBER Plant young pecan and other deciduous fruit trees and grapes. Start dormant pruning of established fruits. Protect all young trees from rabbit damage by placing wire around the base of the tree. Put on dormant oil spays for scale. Mulch all plantings. Shrubs, trees, and indoor plants make excellent gifts.
JANUARY Plant apples, peaches, pears, and grapes. Prune dormant trees. Continue planting shrubs and trees, both evergreen and deciduous. Spray all deciduous shrubbery with a dormant oil to control diseases and insects. Soil test lawns before setting up fertility program. Check stored bulbs and discard rotten ones. Plant lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli in cold frames.
Winter is a wonderful time to visit the Garden, get out of the house, take a break from the holidays, and shake off that cabin fever. Our large variety of berried plants attract many species of birds to our Lewis Birding Trail. Winter is the best time to look at evergreens as the ‘bones’ to your garden. Visit the Garden, your community Garden, to see all the varieties of evergreens that can be used in your home garden. It is also a great time to see structural elements of plants such as interesting bark and sculptural plant shapes. Do not forget, the Garden is still blooming during the winter months with camellias and fragrant winter witch hazel and more. Visit our website HSVBG.org to see listings of plant identification classes to learn more about the plants and varieties.
Berries and Birds
The native deciduous hollies, Possumhaw (Ilex decidua) and Winterberry Holly (I. x verticillata) provide beautiful red or yellow berries and food for our feathered friends. Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) is an evergreen native holly with an abundance of very clear red berries that provides both food and shelter for birds. Many other plant species make HBG welcoming to birds in the winter. Did you know Alabama actually has more birds in the winter than in summer because of migratory birds overwintering in our mild climate?
Evergreen Trees and Shrubs
The garden is home to thousands of evergreen tree and shrub varieties. One of the newer varieties, Gem Box® Inkberry Holly (Ilex glabra), is an excellent native alternative to boxwood that is great for low hedges. It looks similar to boxwood, but it is very resistant to disease and rarely requires pruning to maintain its dense, rounded shape. It grows 2-3 feet tall in zones 5-9 and tolerates moderate to poorly drained soils very well. Gem Box® Inkberry Holly is in the Proven Winner Series of shrubs that have been bred to produce more compact, disease resistant and longer blooming plants.
Bark
Many small trees such as Coral Bark Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’), Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum), American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana), and Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa) all have interesting colored and textured bark.
Blooms
Fall (Camellia sasanqua) and winter (C. japaonica) camellias start blooming in late October and bloom well into the following May. The native American Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana) begins blooming in the fall followed by the hybrid witchhazels (H. x intermedia ‘Diane’), and the Vernal Witchhazel (H. vernalis) which blooms in January. Our hardy and deer resistant Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis) is an excellent evergreen dry shade perennial that flowers throughout the winter months.

garden impact WHAT IS AND HOW DOES IT WORK? Huntsville Botanical Garden’s iNaturalist project is here to help budding naturalists survey the amazing diversity of plant, insect, and animal life they may see while visiting the Garden. »In 2008, the California Academy of Science launched the online app iNaturalist connecting naturalist, citizen scientists and biologist to a new concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe. Access the website on a computer or other mobile device www. inaturalist.org »Database of observed species that is accessible by everyone »Findings are shared with scientific data repositories like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) »iNaturalist allows you to observe a species, take a picture, and upload/share it on your computer or mobile device. »iNaturalist helps users keep track of living organisms they see, get help with identifying something you find and learn about nature. Contribute to the data collected about the plants and animals we find in the Garden to the projects we have posted on the official Huntsville Botanical Garden account. For more information go to www.hsvbg.org and click on the Learn tab. »Be a Citizen Scientist! »Do it every month! »New list every month of species to look for and record! »The more people participate regularly the better data we can collect!
GREEN POWER
HBG supports TVA’s Green Power Switch (GPS) for a cleaner environment. It is through this spirit of community and conservation that the Huntsville Botanical Garden inspires visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature while encouraging preservation of the natural environment through clean energy generation. Green Power Switch (GPS) gives TVA’s electric customers an opportunity to support renewable energy generated by sources such as wind and solar, and Huntsville Botanical Garden has been a Green Power Provider (GPP) for the Green Power Switch program since 2011. The Garden opted to go green by unveiling a 23-kilowatt capacity solar panel array that generates about 30,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually equal to generating enough power for 2-3 households in the Tennessee Valley.
Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, November 27, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. This is the perfect time to donate to the Garden to help our mission of Education, Conservation, and Growth. Follow us on social media to find out more about #GivingTuesday and what it means to the Garden! is for Volunteer
When you see the “V” at the top of a page, it means that volunteers are needed for those specific activities, festivals, or exhibits. For a complete list of volunteer opportunities, please visit hsvbg.org/volunteer. For more information, contact Cookie Adams at volunteer@hsv.org or 256.830.4447 ext 238.
bird’s eye view The Scarlet Tanager BY HERB LEWIS
During Spring migration, one of the most stunning and beautiful birds of North America may be seen in the Garden. The male Scarlet Tanager is the only North American bird that has a combination of a radiant red body and glossy black wings. Wintering in the tropics of South America, in March they begin their northern migration flying mainly at night including a 500 mile non-stop flight over the Gulf of Mexico. By April they reach North Alabama. They may be seen feeding in the Mathews Nature or Bush Azalea Trail tree canopies, in shrubs and on the ground with the water channel offering an exceptional opportunity to possibly view the birds bathing or drinking. Since they fly at night, the best opportunity to see these tropical colored birds is in the mornings when they are actively searching for food and water. Obtain a map of the birding trail at the Visitor Center to locate the areas along the water channel starting at the Fern Glade.

The Butch Damson 2018 Volunteers of the Year
Our 2018 Volunteers of the Year are a couple—two outstanding individuals who love the Garden and who have devoted close to 10,000 volunteer hours over a period of 10 years. Bob and Sandy Hovde have worked together and separately—Sandy as Admissions Desk and Gift Shop volunteer and Galaxy of Lights Chairman; and Bob as guiding and directing the Galaxy Crew, something he will do again in 2019. When Galaxy lost its founding leader, Bob took over this very important position. With the help of his wife and fellow Galaxy volunteers, a smooth transition was made possible. He continues the excellent work of his predecessor, engineering and overseeing the designs and displays from start to finish. Sometimes you will find Bob installing lighting for seasonal exhibits or special events such as Fresh From the Garden. When Sandy is not involved with the Galaxy management team, she can be found working at the Admissions Desk assisting guests and sharing Garden information. As an active member of the Garden Guild, she also served as a board member and on numerous committees including Spring Plant Sale. Bob and Sandy, congratulations on your selection and thank you for all that you do for Huntsville Botanical Garden!

Engineering Christmas It began when he was eight years old, with a single strand of Christmas lights and a controller box purchased at the hardware store, and quickly turned into a passion. Since then, Steven Byrd has been creating animated holiday light displays and setting them to music and each year the displays have become more elaborate. “I just kind of took it and ran with it,” says Byrd, a sophomore computer engineering major at UAH. Three years ago, he brought his passion and talent to Galaxy of Lights. “I’d been coming to Galaxy since I was five years old and I always loved it and wanted to be a part of it someday,” he says. He sent the Galaxy crew a video of the shows he had created in his neighborhood and immediately won them over. As a Galaxy volunteer, he works on sequencing light displays and setting them to music. This year, he introduced a new technology called RGB that allows him to program and control individual bulbs, instead of entire strands of light. “It allows for some really neat effects,” he says. Though the name SAM (for Sound and Music) 3A doesn’t sound like much, Steven’s upgraded display will play four different songs, all coordinated to intricate light animation, and is sure to dazzle Galaxy of Lights visitors. Steven looks forward to continuing to bring new technology to Galaxy of Lights in the years to come. “I plan on being here as long as I possibly can. Who knows? This could be a lifetime thing,” he says about continuing to volunteer. “[The Galaxy crew] feels like an extended family and I don’t ever want that feeling to go away.”
