THE GARDEN CONSERVANCY 2015

Letter from the Chairman and President 2015 was a good year—an opportunity to celebrate the many accomplishments of the Garden Conservancy’s first twentyfive years and to focus on further growth. Thanks to the hard work of the staff and the support of all of our members, partners, and donors, the Garden Conservancy is in a strong position as we move into our second quarter century. We continue to be the nation’s leader in garden preservation. In 2015, we reviewed our preservation work, improved our systems for identifying and taking on gardens, and clarified our goals for our preservation work going forward. We hired the first garden director at the Chase Garden and set strategic goals for the garden. We transferred the Rocky Hills conservation easement to the Westchester Land Trust, and supported the Atlanta History Center’s restoration of the Swan House boxwood garden and the construction of a new potting shed at The Fells in New Hampshire. We identified new preservation gardens and laid the groundwork for taking them on in 2016. Our Open Days program is the nation’s only national garden visitation program. In 2015, we opened 320 private gardens in twenty-two states and introduced Digging Deeper lectures and pop-up plant sales to complement garden visiting. Last September, Open Days was recognized by the Garden Writers Association for its service in promoting gardening in North America. Our Society of Fellows visited a variety of beautiful gardens and historic landscapes during our 2015 garden-study tours to Atlanta, the Gold Coast of Long Island, Mount Desert Island, and South Africa. In September, we published Outstanding American Gardens, celebrating the Garden Conservancy’s first twenty-five years of saving and sharing outstanding gardens across the country. The book was a huge success, quickly selling out its first two printings. In addition, the special anniversary edition of our annual report was awarded an honorable mention by the Public Relations Society of America. Late last year, we hired new dedicated education staff on both coasts, to help us build out our education program and increase the range and locations of our programming. All of these accomplishments were possible because of the support of the hundreds of individuals and organizations listed in this publication’s Report of Gifts section. To each of our members, supporters, partners, and friends across the country, thank you. Special thanks to Suzanne and Ric Kayne for their generous $500,000 challenge grant, which was fully matched in early 2015. As Sofia Blanchard of our preservation garden Greenwood Gardens often reminds us, gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow.

PURSUING OUR MISSION

Bringing Together People and Gardens Bringing together people and gardens is fundamental to our mission to save and share outstanding American gardens for the education and inspiration of the public. One of the most effective ways in which we do this is through Open Days, our signature national garden visiting program, which opens beautiful and private gardens to the public across the country from early spring to late autumn. Open Days is our most visible and effective means of igniting a love for gardening in new generations and fostering an appreciation of nature, the landscape arts, and the future of American gardening. Started twenty-two years ago, Open Days has grown in scope and stature, and has become a seasonal tradition for tens of thousands of visitors every year, from Los Angeles to Bar Harbor, Seattle to Miami, and Houston to Milwaukee. In 2015, we introduced exciting new Open Days educational programs, including a series of pop-up nurseries and Digging Deeper events, both of which proved to be very popular. We are adding more Digging Deeper programs, increasing the range of pop-up garden shops, and introducing opportunities to meet experts in the garden—all designed to enhance visitors’ garden visits, attract younger audiences, and expand our mission and reach into new markets. And, of course, to be fun as well!

Our very first Digging Deeper event was held at a June 2015 Open Day in Albion, CA, followed by a guided tour of Digging Dog Nursery (photo). In its inaugural season, Digging Deeper events proved very popular with Open Days visitors, offering them insights from garden specialists on topics such as combining edibles with aesthetics, pottery and dahlia growing, and landscape architecture and gardening.

PURSUING OUR MISSION

Preserving Inspiring Artistic Visions What makes gardens outstanding is often the unique artistic vision of their creators: the gardens become living works of art as worthy of preservation as masterpieces on canvas. We help private gardens become public, acting as an advisor and coach. We also help existing public gardens undertake projects to restore and rehabilitate aspects of their gardens, many of which embody significant and historic design styles. One example of the kinds of gardens we work with is the Chase Garden in Orting, Washington, a beautiful example of the Pacific Northwest mid-century garden style. It blends modernist and Japanese styles to create a unique, peaceful experience in a spectacular setting. In 2015, we hired the first director for the garden and worked with her to expand programming and visitation. Also in 2015, we began to develop a garden documentation program aimed at creating a visual and archival record of the artistic vision and design of gardens. Our goal is to preserve online the legacies and features behind their at-risk gardens as enduring educational resources, making them accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime. With parameters for the project in place, we began documenting two gardens in New York State: Rocky Hills in Mount Kisco and the Humes Japanese Stroll Garden in Locust Valley. The majesty of a moment in time—dramatic sunshine shining through a dawn redwood in autumnal dress at Rocky Hills in Mount Kisco, NY—was captured for the ages by photographer Andre Baranowski. We are gathering images along with historical records, maps, videos, and audio recordings for an online garden documentation project launched in 2015 thanks to the new Frederic Rheinstein Fund.

PURSUING OUR MISSION

Bringing America’s Cultural Legacy to Life Many of the emerging and established public gardens that we assist are registered national historic sites and important parts of America’s landscape design and horticultural legacy. We are supporting the Lord & Schryver Conservancy (L&S Conservancy) in its efforts to preserve Gaiety Hollow in Salem, Oregon, as a historic site and community resource. Gaiety Hollow was the home, office, and garden of Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver, who formed the first all-female landscape architecture firm in the Pacific Northwest. The firm became a major force in shaping the city of Salem and designed more than 250 landscapes in the region. We are working with the L&S Conservancy to create a strategic marketing plan and raise visibility for the garden. In the fall of 2015, we supported the Atlanta History Center in its restoration of the Swan House boxwood garden to its original 1930s appearance, as designed by one of Atlanta’s foremost architects, Philip Trammell Shutze. Late last year, we also provided funds to enable The Fells Historic Estate & Gardens in New Hampshire to construct a new potting facility as part of an overall capacity building campaign.

In November 2015, we announced a Garden Conservancy grant to help the Atlanta History Center restore the iconic Swan House boxwood garden. In preparing the area for the planting, horticulturists unearthed long-forgotten traces of the original design, a serendipitous finding that is guiding the replanting of a circle of redbud trees in Philip Trammell Shutze’s design from the 1930s.

PURSUING OUR MISSION

Showcasing Best Practices in Horticulture and Design Our preservation work helps to save many gardens that are notable not only for their design features, but also for their exceptional plant collections and horticultural practices. Peckerwood Garden in Hempstead, Texas, is a good example. In 2015, with support from the Garden Conservancy, Peckerwood began a digital documentation project to catalogue the garden’s extensive collection of oaks and other trees. At the end of the year, we also finalized and accepted a conservation easement on the garden to help ensure that the garden and its more than 3,000 species of rare and endangered plants will be protected in perpetuity. We also share best practices in horticulture and design through a variety of high-quality educational programs in key locations across the country. In 2015, for example, we featured internationally renowned garden designers Luciano Giubbilei and Arne Maynard in a series of distinguished lectures in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco. We hired an education director focused entirely on programming and are broadening our educational efforts to provide more offerings.

As part of eight distinguished lectures we offered in four locations in the fall of 2015, British garden designer Arne Maynard presented a personal account of his creative process at the Walt Disney Family Museum (photo) in San Francisco and also at the Ebell of Los Angeles. Maynard is known for his ability to create gardens with a keen sense of harmony and belonging.

PURSUING OUR MISSION

Fostering Vibrant Communities Public gardens serve as important gathering places for their communities, connecting neighbors to neighbors and one generation to another. The Ruth Bancroft Garden in California, Greenwood Gardens in New Jersey, Hollister House Garden in Connecticut, and Hortulus Farm in Pennsylvania are examples of gardens we have helped emerge as public resources and with which we continue to partner. Each of these gardens has developed robust public programming—from garden tours to musical performances to educational workshops—that draw people from their immediate communities and well beyond. The Garden Conservancy is also collaborating ever more closely with the American Public Gardens Association, which represents more than 9,000 garden professionals and more than 600 public gardens—the vast majority of them small and emerging. We are helping the APGA serve the needs of member gardens, particularly small ones, in a variety of ways. We presented a program at the 2015 annual APGA conference in Minneapolis and more collaborations are underway. Our Garden Conservancy Northwest Network (GCNN) is an association of more than twenty small public gardens, city parks, and horticultural organizations in the Pacific Northwest that promotes resource sharing, networking, and professional education among its members. The GCNN serves as a resource in the region for peer support and cross-marketing. We hope to establish similar networks of gardens in other key regions.

An Easter egg hunt at Longue Vue House & Gardens in New Orleans is an example of the many enduring community benefits of the garden restoration that we helped enable after Hurricane Katrina’s devastation ten years ago. Longue Vue’s community programs include a range of educational programs for children of all ages. Photo courtesy of Longue Vue House & Gardens.

Report of Gifts Gifts from Garden Conservancy members, donors, garden clubs, and other organizations, together with grants from foundations and corporations, sustain our mission to save and share outstanding American gardens for the education and inspiration of the public. We are deeply grateful to all of our donors for their participation and support, and regret only that we cannot name each of them on these pages. We are also grateful to our many volunteers and partners. Our efforts to save and share gardens across the country are possible only with their collaboration and support. The lists on the following pages recognizes members and donors who contributed $125 or more in cumulative gifts between January 1 and December 31, 2015.
