MESSAGE FROM JAMES GIBSON President

Dear Cherished Members,

The three words that are the core of our identity, defining what Garden of the Gods Resort & Club represents as a place and a destination, expresses a fundamental ideal we relentlessly uphold. It is the promise we make to all who come here, especially our valued Members – “Enriching by Nature”.

In particular, Garden of the Gods events are a treasured part of our community and one of many ways we aim to Enrich by Nature. We strive to create indelible memories and fun traditions for our members, their children, and grandchildren. Thus, we hope you join us this July for our Annual Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza while we happily host you and your loved ones for a relaxing, enjoyable, and unforgettable Independence Day.

For our Golf enthusiasts, the Annual Men’s Camel Drivers Invitational Golf Tournament will once again take place on our challenging 27-hole golf course. This landmark event is filled with a great deal of history, and is a special legacy gathering for our Members that we host with the utmost pride.

The sun is shining bright, and it is our commitment to shine just as bright for you during the month of July at Garden of the Gods Resort & Club.

An inductee to the Vintners Hall of Fame, Miljenko “Mike”

Grgich is a legend in the Napa Valley. Over the past 50 years, Mike’s wines, crafted in the classic Old World tradition, have won a stream of California and international prizes, establishing Grgich Hills Estate as one of the premier wineries in the U.S. and the world. Passionate and relentless in his quest for quality, Mike has also helped pioneer a number of significant breakthroughs in California winemaking techniques, including the use of cold sterilization and malolactic fermentation and the use of oak barrels for proper aging.

Mike’s most celebrated achievement came in 1976 when a Chardonnay he crafted for Chateau Montelena beat the very best wines in France in a now famous blind tasting in Paris. This event that stunned the wine world catapulted the Napa Valley into thefront ranks of the leading wine-producing regions of the world. 2023 is the 100th birthday of Mike.

LET'S LOOK AT PROPER GOLF ALIGNMENT ...IN THE SIMPLEST FORM

Even though most amateur golfers understand the importance of lining themselves up correctly on the golf course (and have a fair idea what it consists of), I still see alignment issues in the majority of players I meet.

There are 2 reasons for this:

1. They have altered their stance and address position to try and compensate for a fault in their golf swing (such as a slice).

2. They simply fail to check their alignment on a very regular basis and bad habits silently creep in.

A consistent golf swing and a consistent golf game can only be built on proper alignment. Don’t try and correct faults in your game before addressing this issue.

To check your alignment, pick a target in the distance and set up to the ball as normal. Place a club along the line of your toes, step back and see where the club points. This will give you immediate feedback and corrections can be made to assist with better alignment

RACQUET SPORTS TIP OF THE MONTH

VOLLEY CONTROL - This month’s tip is keeping your focus on volley’s. I like to teach the volley as a way for you to focus on watching the ball through the back of your strings. This is not a simple task, in that trying to do so results in keeping your head extremely still and your eyes focused on one thing executing the shot. Whether you are a pickleball or tennis player keeping your eyes focused on contact rather than where the ball is supposed to go will give you great control on your shots. Keep working on your game!

THE GOSPEL OF GOOD FORM

As fitness instructors and coaches, we often see movement patterns that aren’t exactly “textbook.”

And we love that! Why? Because it reveals the story your body has been creating since the injury/surgery/event that caused you to compensate in ways that kink your movement chain.

WEEKLY TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL CLINICS

But we preach good form as the gateway to healthy, vibrant movement because:

Good form minimizes injury. Lunges that track outside the toes, lifting that brings shoulders to ears and rotating, shifting hips when rotating the core – these movements increase wear and tear on ligaments and joints due to poor form. Those misaligned lunges? Inner and outer knee pain may ensue. Those shrugged shoulders? Tight neck, limited arm mobility and headaches may follow. Hips swivel excessively? Low back and knee trouble are likely results.

Good form maximizes strength. When joints are correctly aligned, efficient movement results. Often, increases in pain over time lead to compensating movements that misalign joints, leading to recruitment of other muscles further away to help lift/ push/rotate. The body learns “bad habits” that exacerbate the injury and create new imbalances and inefficient movement. Since muscle mass decreases beyond our fifth decade, proper movement is essential to staying strong and fully functional.

How can you achieve good form in your movements?

Check your ego - lower the resistance (weight) or speed. Practice making mistakes – experiment at light resistance to see how your range of motion can increase. Lengthening those muscles under increased resistance is the path to building real strength.

Make it pretty – does it “look right” in the mirror? What do you feel when you adjust your movement pattern - did your core engage more? Did neck tightness disappear?

Jessica Korda’s drive and Roger Federer’s backhand look right because they are mechanically excellent. Practice made them masters.

Be able to pause at any time during the movement – this is a good test of proper form. Speak with one of our trainers. We offer free assessments of your strength and movement patterns, and we can guide you through exercises that meet your lifestyle and competitive goals. You’ll get stronger as we simply correct safety errors.

GROUNDS TEAM PROTECTS WATER SOURCE

Some recent updates were made to the pumping system on 7 south pond which had been drained all winter. Last summer after 62 years of reliable service, our concrete intake pipe failed. The pipe that goes into the pond and feeds our wet well to the pump station started having issues.

In an effort to resolve the problem, scuba divers were hired to dredge down to the clogged/broken pipe. They were able to get the pipe operational to finish out the growing season with a reliable source of water.

Unfortunately, it was not a permanent fix. To repair the infrastructure and guarantee we have a reliable source of precious water for the golf course and grounds, we invested in a new system. We hired the perfect contractor to come in and install a 30” HDPE pipe with a self-cleaning box screen (below). As a result, we are moving forward with better infrastructure to keep our most valuable resource flowing.

DONALD & RINGUETTE WEDDING

Kayla & Cody had a very romantic July wedding with us in 2022. They turned our Three Graces Ballroom from a blank canvas into a romantic candlelit reception room. By adding draping and uplighting to the walls, they were able to turn their venue space into a scene from a Hallmark Movie. The setup and design of your reception space can play a big role in the type of environment you want to provide for your guests. Kayla and Cody wanted to showcase their love throughout the evening and they did just that by creating a cozy, elegant atmosphere that encourage their guests to indulge in the spirit of love!

Some great elements that will show your guests some love and appreciation are personalized favors. Kayla and Cody provided koozies for all their guests that incorparated the venue scenery and a fun souviner easy for guests to take home!

SANDRA DEE COLLINS, STRATA MAKEUP ARTIST

How did you get into this line of work?

Back in Los Angeles, I was in film school, going into set design. One time we were doing a play, the makeup artist was sick, so I stood in. And so I came out of school a makeup artist just by pure accident! Then, a very famous makeup artist, Eugenia Weston, took me under her wing for my first five years, so I started out in working film in California. I was her assistant and learned the ropes.

Why do you love what you do?

I love being busy. That’s where I thrive. I’m a very good multi-tasker. I love the happiness that it brings me, but also the happiness on my client’s faces. I did some makeup for a VIP yesterday and I also did her last year for her event. It’s all about the relationships – and that’s what I love. From the beginning to the end. And hopefully there won’t be an end. I don’t want there to be. I love it.

What do you like about working at Strata?

The team here. Everyone works together really well.We make sure our one faculty is making sure the guest or members get the best service ever. And look at where we work – we all have bad days, but you can literally walk outside here and you know, that bad day can go away. There’s so much to offer. I just feel so lucky to be working here. I really do.
