YOU ARE INVITED TO AN EDUCATIONAL SESSION Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, QCDs Can Be a Valuable Giving Tool for Those Over 701/2 Patrick Carney, CFP®, Financial Planner with Rodgers & Associates
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 11:45AM, CONCORD ROOM (LUNCH INCLUDED) To register call Resident Services by Friday, September 20 (space is limited) As a result of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the vast majority of taxpayers began taking the increased Standard Deduction. Because of this, most taxpayers will no longer get a tax benefit from their charitable giving. What do you do if you’ve always enjoyed the double thrill of giving to your favorite charity while reducing the amount of tax to Uncle Sam? One possible giving strategy is to complete a Qualified Charitable Distribution or “QCD” to the qualified charity of your choice directly from your IRA. A QCD allows you to take some or all of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA and not have it counted as income. Join us for this educational session to learn more about how QCDs can be a valuable giving tool.

BELL RINGERS
written by Amanda Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern Maybe you’ve heard them at Christmas on Main, or maybe you’ve gone to one of their concerts in the spring. The Garden Spot Village Bell Ringers are active September to June, giving many opportunities to practice and perform throughout the year, and still have a summer break. The Ringers celebrated their 5th annual spring concert this year, with patriotic selections and others with accompaniment from the piano, flute and hand chimes. This month, the Ringers begin their 6th year of handbells with requests coming in for church programs, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Service and Christmas programs. Fran Rapp started the Ringers club in 2014, with the generosity of St James United Church of Christ, Limerick. They had a set of four-octave handbells that weren’t currently in use and allowed the club to borrow them and help with their debut. Buying a four-octave set of handbells would've been expensive, and the handbell choir wouldn't have been able to start if it hadn't been for the benevolence of St James. Every year as thanks, the Ringers perform for the church. Fran started playing handbells in the late ‘80s. He directed and taught handbells at a school in Montgomery County, and even was the President of the Regional organization. Fran had expressed a desire to start a handbell choir and was able to do so, with the help of GSV Life Enrichment and St James. Fran says, “You don't have to play to enjoy handbells. People enjoy listening and recognizing songs that we play.” Some may think you need to be able to read music, or have years of prior experience in order to be able to play handbells, but that’s not the case. While being able to read music helps, it’s not crucial. The notes are color coded to specific bells, depending upon the difficulty of the arrangement. There are two Ringer groups, one for beginners and one for the more experienced. Each group needs 12 people in order to have four octaves. Many people have contacted Fran and tried the handbell choir, meeting every Monday morning for an hour. Currently, the choir has 18 members during the winter season and 12 members during the spring season. The group plays for concerts, Towne Hall Meetings and other special events, like the Great Christmas Ring. If you are interested in joining the GSV Ringers or have any questions, contact Fran Rapp at 717.355.6511 or franrapp@frontier.com

READING TO AND WITH YOUR GRANDKIDS OR OTHER CHILDREN IN YOUR LIFE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. It deepens your relationship with them and creates lifelong memories, in addition to all the developmental and learning benefits. In many respects, outstanding grandparents become superheroes for their grandkids when they intentionally work to be a positive influence in their lives. In the upcoming edition of Destination magazine you will find a story on page 49 that you can read to or with the children in your life. At the end, you’ll find a couple of fun and engaging questions to spark a conversation. Destination magazine now crosses intergenerational boundaries and includes a section that hopefully both you and your grandkids will look forward to reading.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2019 Speaker: Val Dunham, GSV resident | Topic: The Apple Jack Raid Book: Allegany to Appomattox; The Life and Letters of Private William Whitlock of the 188th New York Volunteers
September Fest SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 5-7PM, PAVILION
It’s oompah time with the Heidelberg Brass Band, birch beer, hot dogs and soft pretzel sticks. Enjoy the cool autumn weather at the outdoor Pavilion. Bring a dessert to share. Bring a comfortable lawn chair. But, most of all, bring a GSV friend or neighbor.
Author: Valgene Dunham, Syracuse University Press, 2013, Foreword by Bill Potter On September 7, 1864, William Whitlock, age thirty-five, left his wife and four children in Allegany, New York, to join the Union army in battle. More than one hundred years later, the letters he wrote to his wife were found in the attic of a family home. These letters serve as the foundation for Allegany to Appomattox, giving readers a vivid glimpse into the environment and political atmosphere that surrounded the Civil War, from the perspective of a Northern farmer and lumberman. Whitlock’s observations tell of exhausting marches, limited rations, and grueling combat. In plainspoken language, the letters also reveal a desperate homesickness, persistent expressions of concern for the family’s health and financial situation, and requests for news from home. Dunham’s detailed descriptions of the war’s progress and specific battles provide a rich context for Whitlock’s letters, orienting readers to both the broad narrative of the Civil War and the intimate chronicle of one soldier’s impressions.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUPS
These groups offer a free opportunity to learn from each other, find supportive understanding, be encouraged, and learn new educational information and life skills.
SEPTEMBER 4, WEDNESDAY Living with Loss Group Facilitator: Marcia Parsons | Topic: Strength-Based Grieving 10am, Prayer and Meditation Room
Grief is not a problem to solve or an illness from which to recover. What would happen if we started viewing grief as something normal that we will all experience? What if we recognized that we all have strengths and resources, both evident and hidden, which will accompany us as we grieve? (taken from Elizabeth Pomeroy & Renee Garcia) The Living with Loss group is for individuals who are grieving the death of a loved one, and is open to individuals in various phases of grief who desire the support of others. The group provides information and resources, as well as emotional encouragement and support. Contact Marcia Parsons (6239) for more information.

FREE CONFIDENTIAL MEMORY SCREENINGS
A memory screening is a simple and safe healthy brain checkup that tests memory and other thinking skills. (Alzheimer’s foundation of America, 2019). So why is it important to get a memory screening and why should I get one? According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, screenings are a significant first step towards finding out if a person may have a memory problem. Memory problems could be caused by a number of medical conditions including vitamin deficiencies, thyroid issues, and depression – all of which are treatable. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or Mild Cognitive Impairment can also improve one’s quality of life by allowing the individual an opportunity to take advantage of treatments that may slow the changes in memory and thinking skills. (Alzheimer’s foundation of America, 2019).
INTRODUCING INDEPENDENT LIVING SOCIAL WORKER, LISA MORGAN
Lisa is a native of Lancaster, having grown up in Lancaster near the old St. Joe’s Hospital. She is a graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School and Millersville University. Lisa is married to Erik, also a Lancaster native and a small business owner. They have two sons, Joshua, working in Lancaster, and Garrett, a sophomore in college in South Carolina. Lisa was home for many years helping to raise her sons. Upon re-entering the workforce, she focused again on her interest in older members of the community. She very much enjoys helping all to live to the fullest potential no matter what the age. This philosophy, and the focus on service in Christ, is what sparked her interest in working at Garden Spot Village. Lisa has experience working with seniors at various levels of care. She enjoys helping residents age in place and stay as independent as possible with the proper supports in place. In addition to spending time with her family, Lisa loves to spend time at the beach or anywhere near water. She loves to kayak and enjoys the outdoors, or taking her 12-year-old German Shepherd for walks. Lisa also loves to listen to the life stories of others. She looks forward to getting to know the residents and staff at GSV. Lisa will be on campus four days a week (M, T, Th, F). You can reach her at (6171). While Jenny Snyder cares for her new baby (Sept, Oct, Nov) Lisa will be the primary contact for residents in Sycamore Springs and VSA. She will also serve as primary contact for residents in Gardens East, assisting Mary Beth to cover GN, GS, and GW. Stop by and introduce yourself to Lisa. Her office is in the Social Service Conference Room.

WELLNESS SEPTEMBER IS FOCUS MONTH / INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS There are eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family & Friends, Feelings and Focus. Pick up your copy of the Family & Friends Calendar at the Wellness Lobby or the Apartment Suites Welcome Center. Definition of Intellectual Wellness Intellectual Wellness encourages us to engage in creative and mentallystimulating activities. These activities should expand knowledge and skills while allowing you to share knowledge and skills with others. Intellectual Wellness can be developed through academics, cultural involvement, community involvement and personal hobbies. As Intellectual Wellness develops, you are able to develop personal resources that work together with the other realms of wellness, in order to achieve a more balanced life. WHY IS INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS IMPORTANT? Intellectual Wellness encourages learning. It is important to explore new ideas and understandings, in order to become more mindful and better-rounded. Having an optimal level of intellectual wellness inspires exploration. Intellectual Wellness also stimulates curiosity. Curiosity is important because it motivates you to try new things and develop an understanding of how you see the relationship between yourself, others and the environment. The Route to Intellectual Wellness In order to begin the route to Intellectual Wellness, you must remember to be open-minded. Be open to new ideas, new cultures, new knowledge, new skills and new environments. When you have an open mind, the world is truly yours. This allows you to explore issues relating to problem solving, critical thinking, learning and creativity. Below is a list of suggestions to adopt in order to enhance Intellectual Wellness. • Be open-minded. • Listen. When participating in active listening, you are able to fully comprehend the information that is being given. • Pick up a hobby. Hobbies are great ways to increase skills. They can also be fun! • Travel. The best way to gain knowledge, as well as an appreciation for another culture, is to experience it personally. • Express your creative side by exploring different avenues of creativity and artistic expression. Intellectual Wellness Resources There is no single way to enhance Intellectual Wellness. Intellectual Wellness can be developed through a multitude of activities. Below is a list of UC Davis and outside organization resources to help start a route
Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness
toward Intellectual Wellness.
WELLNESS HIGHLIGHT: DANCE!
Scottish Country Dancing: Tuesdays 1:30-3pm, Fitness Room
Scottish Country Dancing is a form of social dancing or, the ballroom dance of Scotland. It is not to be confused with Highland Dance where a solo dancer performs to bagpipe music. It is the forerunner of the American Square Dance; it is dancing in groups or sets of 3 or more couples. There are about a dozen basic figures, quick time dances such as reels, jigs and a slower tempo Strathspey. Studies have shown that Scottish Country Dancing is a valuable activity for maintaining both physical and mental health. Join the fun – no partner or experience needed, just a pair of soft soled shoes.
Line Dancing: Wednesdays 2-2:45pm, Fitness Room
Line dancing presents itself as the perfect form of exercise because it provides the benefits of an aerobic workout, which helps maintain a healthy heart, and also provides a platform for getting involved in a social environment, which is great for mental wellness.
