CAMPUS SERVICES

Scott Ruth, Director of Campus Services

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US ON THE CAMPUS SERVICES STAFF!!! This is our first contribution to the Garden Variety since Scott Weaver retired in September 2019. As the new Director of Campus Services, I would like to thank everyone for your warm welcoming embrace since starting just after Labor Day 2019. I would particularly like to thank Steve Muller and Scott Weaver for allowing me the privilege of working closely with them for the first month of my employment. Scott Weaver could not have been more gracious in his sharing of time and knowledge to help acclimate me with Garden Spot Village, making the transition for residents and staff flow very smoothly. Steve Muller was equally gracious in sharing his excitement and passion for continuing to want to make Garden Spot Village a wonderful place to work and for our residents to call home. Campus Services will continue to contribute to the Garden Variety monthly, providing pertinent seasonal information. Snow Removal is likely to be a topic on the minds of a few of you! • Snow removal efforts and procedures will continue to be the same as in previous years. • The Campus Services staff has all our snow removal equipment ready to go, and by the time of this article, we will hopefully be in the possession of a new Salt Spreader for our largest dump truck. • We will be working with Burkholder Excavating and Lincoln Line Painting to keep the Campus safe during winter weather events. • As a new Director, my hope is after an event or two, I will be able to offer a few suggestions to improve efficiencies in the clean-up procedures. • Please be aware of the use of CATIE messages before, during and after winter weather events to keep you abreast of scheduling operations and pavement conditions. Be grateful we are able to observe the changing of seasons. Slow down and enjoy subtle surprises that winter has to offer. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your new Director of Campus Services. Looking forward to 2020!

ANGEL TREES 2019

Many thanks to all who participated in the Angel Tree project. This year, more than 200 angels adorned our trees in the Chapel Lobby, with the proceeds from those donations going to the Benevolent Fund. Thank you for choosing to remember your loved ones in this manner.

Tom Tillett, a retired public school history teacher and former Chief of Staff for Congressman Joe Pitts, presents a program honoring the 75th Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation Day. Since Mr. Tillett's most recent visit to Auschwitz in 2015, he has been particularly concerned that while it is a museum, Auschwitz uses the term authentic experience while visitors are exposed to nonauthentic experiences. As we approach this subject, we need to be scrupulously accurate. Has the pressure of mass tourism changed the way history is revealed? This event is free and open to the public.

OPENING WINDOWS TO WORSHIP: TAIZE Sunday, January 19 – 5:30pm, Garden Towers

Taize is both a form of chant and a place in France. Once a small village, Taize is now home to an ecumenical community of more that a hundred brothers from 25 countries of Protestant and Catholic traditions. Its founder, Brother Roger, began the ministry in 1940 as a place where the ways of trust and reconciliation could be opened for the whole human family. The songs of Taize are known and sung around the world. They were written explicitly for all Christians, Protestant and Catholic, to pray the scriptures with simple repetitive chants. Today, in the United States and elsewhere, simple Taize worship is becoming a welcome addition to services in many Protestant churches. It is used frequently in Bible study groups and on retreats. Brother Roger’s vision has grown into a place of pilgrimage primarily for youth. High school and college students flock to Taize every summer to experience Christianity in its most ecumenical form, to make friends from other countries, and grow in their own religious lives through the spiritual practices of prayer and chant. Taize music is a refreshingly new voice while remaining rooted in very old sources of scripture and prayer. It is characterized by melodic, harmonic simplicity, and repetitive refrains. Even non-singers can experience the meditative quality of these prayerful chants that have an essentially timeless quality about them. If you are planning to attend a Taize service, you can expect to sing four or five chants occurring between one or two scripture readings and prayers. Except for possibly rising to light a prayer candle, you will remain seated for the service. Some congregations offer communion, stand in a circle for a closing benediction, or offer tea in a time of fellowship afterward. Generally a Taize worship will be offered later in the day, sometimes in conjunction with vespers or compline, and will last about 45 minutes. To learn more about the community of Taize, you might want to Google or see www.gotquestions.org/Taize-worship.html

VILLAGE FIRSTS

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

Through 2020 we plan to highlight people at Garden Spot who are “f irst” at something – whether they are the f irst to move into an apartment wing or the f irst person to discover something new.

ANNA WEAVER:

1 to sign a contract on an apartment in Gardens East st

written by Juanita Fox, GSC Storyteller

Anna Weaver, Garden Spot Village resident since May 2003

As a child, Anna Weaver loved to draw. She grew up on a dairy farm in Springville, Pennsylvania, and helped her parents with farm chores. When she married, she and her husband Russel moved to New Holland and worked in the Ix Silk Mills. It was hard work and she was looking for a change. She took a secretarial correspondence course and soon secured a job working in an insurance agency in New Holland.

She became very active in the New Holland community, leading the Professional Women’s Club, serving as the President of the New Holland Business Club and helping to start the Inter Service Club (a club that connected the various clubs in New Holland). After Anna’s husband passed away in 1987, she and a few friends took a painting class at Trinity Lutheran Church. She welcomed the opportunity and was soon painting as often as she could. She and her friends even traveled to New York City and West Virginia several times to take additional lessons. Because she lived and worked in New Holland her entire adult life, she knew she eventually wanted to move to Garden Spot Village. When she learned Gardens East was in the plans, she was the first to sign a contract and choose her apartment! Her apartment is full of her original works and she blesses her friends and family each Christmas with a new hand-painted Christmas card design. Her grandson, who works at a local print shop, takes her painting and transforms it into a greeting card each year. She sends out about 80 of these highly anticipated cards each year. “I always get a call from friends when the card goes out. Everyone looks forward to it,” Anna says.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 14

SOCIAL SERVICES CORNER

Sherilyn Lapp, Director of Social Services

WISHING EACH OF YOU A HAPPY, HEALTHY, SAFE YEAR!

While some things are out of our control, there are decisions that each of us can make that will aid in our ability to look back on 2020 as a positive year. May I suggest two resolutions I have on my personal list that you may also wish to consider? In 2020, I will continue to be Scam Smart In 2020, I will continue to exercise Document Diligence

SCAM SMART

The Social Services team continues to receive frequent reports of scam attempts. Let’s all commit to exercising extreme caution when dealing with any communication via computer, mail or phone requesting personal information or urging immediate action. Scams are ever evolving in approach and sophistication. It is important to recognize that we are all vulnerable in this area. Thinking I would never fall for a scam only lowers personal ability to stay alert and aware. A recent article by Sarah Krouse in The Wall Street Journal entitled Robocall Scams Exist Because They Work, details the story of Ms Belis, an oncology nurse in her 60s, who lost $340,000. A caller impersonating an FBI agent convinced the normally astute nurse that her personal identity had been compromised and crimes had been committed in her name. The FBI agent promised to help her transfer her savings to safe government accounts. Over the course of several days, the fake agent gave Ms Belis detailed instructions on how to bypass bank teller’s questions, meant to screen for fraud withdrawals. They convinced her not to share with family what she was doing. Read the article for a new understanding of how scammers gain trust. The true story above is an example of a Confidence Scheme: taking advantage of societal willingness to trust an “authority figure.” Ask for credentials. Let family members or friends know what you are experiencing. Be skeptical of any conversation that creates a heightened sense of emotion – either fear or excitement (think: being promised a prize or large amount of money). Many protection suggestions are now familiar, such as not answering phone calls from unrecognized numbers, awareness of number spoofing, avoiding isolating yourself from family and financial advisors, awareness the IRS or Social Security will not threaten you and rarely calls customers, etc. Join me in adding this caution to your mental checklist: I will not dismiss falling for a scam as impossible. I will stay informed and alert.

DOCUMENT DILIGENCE

January is a great time to grab a favorite hot beverage and review important personal documents. Check for information accuracy and that each document continues to reflect your wishes. Schedule an appointment with your lawyer for necessary changes to legal documents. There is confidence that others will know how to assist during a difficult time if documents are upto-date. A copy of any revised form (with the exception of your Will) should be given to your GSV social worker. 1. GSV Emergency Sheets Located in your master bathroom cabinet, utilized by staff and EMTs during emergencies in your home. Make changes on one sheet and forward to your social worker (only necessary if there are changes). 2. Durable POA Legal document naming who will handle your financial affairs if you are not able, consider updating if older than 2014 3. Healthcare POA Legal document naming who will carry out/make healthcare decisions if you are unable 4. Living Will Notarized document expressing your wishes for medical treatment 5. Will Legal document instructing others of your wishes for estate distribution, also names whom you have chosen to carry out your plan (Executor)

Watch for information in the February Garden Variety about a special Advanced Medical Directive called a POLST (Pennsylvania Order for Life Sustaining Treatment).

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services TERRY ZIEGLER: AN OPEN AND WILLING HEART

“If I’m available, I always respond, ‘Yes, I’ll try that!’” Terry Ziegler says. “You don’t know if you are going to enjoy something until you try it.” Her open and willing heart means she gets involved in lots of different things at Garden Spot! Terry, who moved to Garden Spot in April 2016, volunteers in Share & Care and Linden, serves on the Cottage Council, helps as a substitute mail sorter and deliverer, checks clothing and bags in and out during the marathon and helps with other one-time events. For example, she’s served as a Business Expo Greeter, Train Room Open House Greeter and helped with the Angel Tree project. “It’s all fun, not work!” Terry says. The volunteer opportunities she enjoys the most involve music and administration. As an outreach of the Community Church of Garden Spot Village, Terry leads a Monday night hymn sing in the Skilled Nursing households. “After the hymn sings, I always go home uplifted,” Terry says. “Even when people can’t participate by singing, I can tell by their faces that they remember the songs and that makes me feel like I have done a little something to encourage them and brighten their day.” As the Music Librarian for Village Voices, Terry catalogs and files (with the help of other volunteers) every piece of music the Village Voices uses. It’s a big job, but she enjoys it. In addition to volunteering at Garden Spot, Terry and her husband, Lloyd, volunteer in the local community. Together they deliver food for Meals on Wheels. She serves as a board member for the New Holland Summer Arts Program, which means she helps at the summer-long concert series, Arts and Crafts Show, and the Fiddler’s Picnic. Wherever and whenever she’s volunteering, Terry takes advantage of the opportunity to know more people and support the work of Garden Spot. She encourages others to join her saying, “Try volunteering! If you don’t think you can do it or you don’t like the assignment you’re given, you can try something else. You will soon learn what you are comfortable doing and you’ll get to know more people.”

WELLNESS

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

2020 IS THE YEAR FOR YOUR WELLNESS VISION

Set your purpose, reach your goals. A Wellness Vision is a compelling description of your best self. Creating and using a Wellness Vision helps you focus on your priorities and move your values into actions. Use these three steps to create your Wellness Vision and mission statement: 1. WRITE IT. What does wellness mean to you? Think beyond health behaviors such as diet and exercise. Also think about what you want in your relationships, spiritual life, career, selfcare, and personal growth and development. Consider your own values — what you stand for and devote your time and energy to — what is going well in your life and how you see yourself in the future. Focus on what you want rather than emphasizing your weaknesses or what you don't want. Think about these questions as you craft your statement: • What are your values — what's really important to you? • How are you putting your values into action? • What do you like about yourself and your life as it is now? • What do you want your life to look like that isn't part of it now? • What results would you like to see? • What energizes you? When do you feel most alive? • How will you feel as your best self? • Who is there with you? • Is there a place that comes to mind when you feel at your best? Have fun with this, and keep an open mind. Whether you end up with a paragraph, a sentence, an acronym or even just one word, if it energizes you then you are on the right path. 2. VISUALIZE IT. Sit in a quiet place and get comfortable. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. In your mind, picture yourself in your ideal state of wellness. Engage your senses so that you can feel what it's like to be at your best. How do you look and feel? What activities are you doing? Next, see if you can find or create a picture or pictures that will help you remember and be motivated by your vision of wellness. Maybe it's a Pinterest board or just a sketch you draw. 3. REFINE IT. Perhaps you created a Wellness Vision at one point, but it's been a while since you looked at it. Maybe your vision just doesn't give you the energy that it once did. Look at the statement with fresh eyes and consider editing it. Refer often to your mission statement to check if your actions are in line with your vision. If you're living it, you should see returns on your investment in yourself.

MARSHA DAWSON: New Memories in Adventure “Snow tubing is something I would never do on my own. But it was so much fun!” says Marsha Dawson, Garden Spot Village resident since August 2016. Marsha admits she was a little nervous about going, but Ski Roundtop staff was helpful. “There were handles in the tubes and with the lanes, I didn’t have to worry that I was going down backwards. I knew I was going to stay in my lane. Plus, there were two lines of people to catch us at the bottom.” She continues, “I love to go on the Wellness Adventures because I know the Garden Spot Wellness staff is there to help, if we need it. They station themselves throughout the adventure so they are readily available.” She adds that the Ski Roundtop lodge with fireplace, food and great hot chocolate, was another highlight. “It was fun to watch the skiers and just relax.” Throughout 2019 she has participated in zip-lining at Refreshing Mountain, tubing on the Brandywine, as well as other adventures. As often as she can, Marsha participates in the Wellness Adventures. “I enjoy the trips because I meet new people and it’s really, really fun.”
