Wellness HISTORY
Twenty years ago, the Pool and Fitness Center at Garden Spot Village opened its doors. A luau was held to celebrate, organized by Colleen Musselman, who previously had overseen the area. At the same time, the position of Wellness Director was advertised, and Lauren Graber had her first interview with John Farber and her second interview with Steve Lindsey. She was offered the position and started on February 4, 2002. We started with a staff of 2 and offered 5 aqua classes and 5 wellness programs per week. Over the years, more staff and programs have been added. Today, Wellness has 8 staff members and offers 16 aqua classes and 30 wellness programs per week. Over the years there have been several other luaus, including one that celebrated our 10th anniversary.
EARLY VOICES: ANNA WEAVER
Throughout 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who helped to shape Garden Spot Village. Anna Weaver celebrated her 105th birthday in mid-October. As a lifelong resident of New Holland, she offers a unique perspective on how the community has changed over the past 100 years. Anna grew up in a stone farmhouse built in 1723 on the other side of the Welsh Mountain, in a small community called Springville. She recalls walking to a one-room school that she attended with 30 other students from first through eighth grade. “The little ones sat up front,” she remembers, “And we had an outhouse – one for the boys and one for the girls. A lot of changes,” she reminisces. Her father got up at 5am each morning to milk their 20+ cows, and they went to bed at 8pm, tired. “We worked hard,” she says. She attended Pequea Evangelical Congregational Church (now Pequea Church) in White Horse, where she sang in the choir and enjoyed summertime children’s classes on Sundays. At age 17, she began to work in nearby New Holland at the Ix Silk Mill. “New Holland was amazing,” she says. “The town was really booming.” She remembers New Holland Machine Company, a stocking factory, a sewing factory, Donald’s Restaurant, Stauffer’s Drug Store, Zausner’s Food, the stockyard and more. The movie theater on Main Street played movies and the trolley went right through the middle of Main Street. She met her husband Russell, at work. He invited her to a movie and the rest is history. On Saturday evenings throughout the summer, they enjoyed attending festivals in nearby towns. When they married, they moved to Custer Street and continued to work in the silk mill. Working in a silk mill was hard work and she was looking for a change. She took a secretarial correspondence course and soon secured a job working in an insurance agency in New Holland. She became very active in the New Holland community, leading the Professional Women’s Club, serving as the President of the New Holland Business Club and helping to start the Inter-Service Club (a club that connected the various clubs in New Holland). After Anna’s husband passed away in 1987, she and a few friends took a painting class at Trinity Lutheran Church. She welcomed the opportunity and was soon painting as often as she could. She and her friends even traveled to New York City and West Virginia several times to take additional lessons. Because she lived and worked in New Holland her entire adult life, she knew she eventually wanted to move to Garden Spot Village. When she learned Gardens East was in the plans, she was the first to sign a contract and choose her apartment. Her apartment is full of her original paintings and for many years she blessed her friends and family each Christmas with a new hand-painted Christmas card design. “I always received calls from friends when the card went out. Everyone looked forward to it,” Anna says.

When prospective residents visit Garden Spot Village, they are thankful for the opportunity to tour homes that have floorplans that meet their needs. Tours are picking up again, now that our campus is open and we’ve been able to host Look & Learn in-person. As a result, we are in need of more volunteers who are willing to allow people to tour their homes. We are not looking for showcase homes; lived-in, tidy homes are more authentic! And, you can pick and choose opportunities that are convenient for your schedule. We specifically need people willing to show their studio, one bedroom and one bedroom with den homes. JUST THINKING . . .
As we continue to think about the journey toward racial equality, we probably all agree that divisiveness is a bad thing, under most circumstances (Jesus on occasion was a divider). Diversity, on the other hand, is often referred to as a gift from God. (What does this imply about a “color-blind” approach to racial equality?) Can we agree that the “heart and mind” concepts of justice/fairness, mercy/kindness, humility and love of the Lord, myself and my neighbor provide a firm personal foundation for addressing racial equality? Are there additional key concepts you would add? How do we jump start these concepts into action either personally or as a community? Or do you feel there is no need to consider taking any action?
ADVENT TAIZÉ SERVICE
Join us for an Advent service in the Taizé tradition on November 28, 6pm in the Chapel. The style of Christian worship practiced in the Taizé tradition is characterized by the repetitive singing of simple harmonized tunes, often in various languages, interspersed with readings, prayers, and periods of silence. The invitation is to join with God in prayer – in song and in silence – in candlelight and community. The invitation to offer respect to one another – honoring the linguistic, ethnic, religious and racial diversity among us. The invitation to be in deep communion with the living Christ in the spirit of the Advent season.
