EARLY VOICES: DOTTIE EDRIS
Throughout 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who helped to shape Garden Spot Village. Dorothy Edris and her husband, Lloyd, moved to 3 Weaver Boulevard at Garden Spot Village on the first day of spring in 1997. Their backyard was an open courtyard stretching all the way to Gardens North, and they could see all the way to the Welsh Mountain from their back porch. From Lebanon County, the Edris’s were actively searching for a cottage in a retirement community when they discovered Garden Spot Village. The timing was right, so they moved to Garden Spot Village just one year after the first residents. The location of their cottage was very convenient, Dotty explains. She had a short walk to the community restaurant, the post office and common spaces. She enjoyed playing card games and mahjong with her neighbors and taking Esther Sideman’s exercise classes. “We were all compatible with each other; we tried to take advantage of everything that was going on at Garden Spot Village,” Dotty says. Dotty and Esther also enjoyed traveling, taking a trip up the Mississippi River as well as an Elderhostel Tour of New Orleans. They also traveled to Scotland and Washington, D.C. She and Lloyd connected quickly to their next door neighbors, Bob and Anna Anton, who introduced them to Bangor Episcopal Church. Through this connection, Dotty and Lloyd made other friends at Garden Spot Village. “The people at Bangor were just so lovely to me, I simply kept attending over the years,” Dotty explains. She now attends the Community Church at Garden Spot Village and appreciates the devotions that pastoral staff Chet Yoder and Karyn Nancarvis lead throughout the week. Over the years Dotty volunteered in a variety of ways at Garden Spot Village. She helped to sort mail two times a week and delivered the mail to mailboxes in Gardens West once a week. She continues to volunteer her time, knotting comforters for Mennonite Central Committee and knitting scarves to donate to CrossNet Ministries. Dotty now lives in Mountain View and has connected with the staff and her new neighbors. A highlight for her over the past summer was Diane Pechart’s butterflies. Diane collects milkweed clippings and displays them in a glass box in a common space in Mountain View. Over time, the tiny monarch larvae that live on the milkweed clippings grow into fat caterpillars. The caterpillars create a chrysalis, and 1014 days later, the monarch butterflies emerge. “It’s a miracle to watch,” Dotty says. “It was the first time I experienced it. I was awestruck.”

JUST THINKING . . .
THE RACIAL EQUITY JOURNEY We did not cause the well-documented disparities between Blacks and Whites discussed earlier in this space. Assuming we all believe that all persons, regardless of race, should be treated the same, should we be giving further thought to these disparities? Isabel Wilkerson, in her book “Caste” puts it as follows (paraphrased). “America is like an old house, built many generations ago. We are like the current occupants of a great house but it has stress cracks and some fissures built into the foundation. While we did not erect this grand old house, its structural problems are ours to deal with now. Any further deterioration is on our hands. The problems will not go away by themselves.” Do you agree with this analogy? Why or why not? After several months of “just” thinking, where are we on this racial equity journey and how do we continue the journey? We (Chaplains Chet and Karyn) are interested in learning your thoughts about this.
HOLIDAY: CHEER, FEAR, OR TEARS?
THURSDAYS, DECEMBER 2, DECEMBER 9, AND DECEMBER 16 10:30AM, GARDEN TOWERS
The approaching holidays may include times when our emotions seem to be at crosspurposes. We experience the joy of gathering with loved ones along with the sadness of missing those no longer with us. We embrace the thought of meaningful experiences, along with the fear of how we will survive. Many times we will experience seemingly opposite emotions at the same time. Ladies, you are invited to join Jeanne Jensma for a time of exploring our emotions: the gift that it is to possess emotions, how to navigate and redirect painful emotions, and how our emotions and spiritual life fit together. We will focus especially on anxiety, grief, loneliness, and depression. Jeanne Jensma spent over a decade in Brazil as a missionary, mostly teaching in a school for TCKs (third-culture kids) and also assisting with churchplanting. Mid-life, she pursued training in counseling and then founded a retreat center for missionaries and pastors with a counseling ministry at the core. The ministry, named Alongside (www.alongsidecares.net), is located in Richland, MI.

Tutoring sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-5pm, start date TBD. A commitment to consistent involvement is required. VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services
THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The shops at Garden Spot Village offer a delightful shopping experience, where you can find a variety of items for yourself and your home. Volunteers staff the stores to keep overhead costs low. Plus, it always feels good to shop at Garden Spot because proceeds from the stores benefit the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund.
Linden
Linden offers a unique collection of quality gifts, accessories, clothing, jewelry and essential items. Where else can you pick up a new blouse, a gift for the grandkids and a pint of Fox Meadows ice cream? While Jodi Lefever and Amanda Feeg, Volunteer Services, offer leadership to Linden, the store really runs on volunteers! Volunteers work two-hour shifts Monday through Saturday, covering all of the hours the store is open. In addition, a team of residents helps to stock Linden with the essentials. Ed and Darlene Smith purchase health and beauty items for the store as well as, light bulbs, soap, candy and bulk items. The Smiths regularly check expiration dates on the milk and other perishable items and on Monday and Wednesday mornings they shop for bananas.
Share & Care
The Share & Care Thrift Shop at Garden Spot Village is one of the best kept secrets in New Holland. The shop offers quality used items—from lamps and dishes to linens, purses, jewelry and furniture—at incredibly affordable prices. E.J. Rittersbach, Shirley Wenger and Janice Ford co-manage Share & Care. A team of volunteer residents work in two-hour shifts Monday through Saturday. In addition to volunteering, Garden Spot Village residents can support Share & Care by shopping and donating. EJ says, “We always want to look at furniture before it’s dropped off, but everything else is welcome. Working coffee pots, toasters, flat screen TVs, knick-knacks, baskets—we welcome everything but clothing. If we get something we can’t sell, we just pass it along to another thrift store.”
Christel Huxley volunteers in both stores. “When someone walks into Share & Care or Linden I always say, ‘If I can talk you into anything, just let me know.’ They turn and laugh and by that time we’re friends,” says Christel. She enjoys the interaction she has with customers and the opportunity to serve her community.
Volunteer Services is currently seeking seasonal volunteers to help in Linden and Share & Care
during the Best Kept Secrets Tour and the holiday season (through December). To learn more or volunteer, stop by the Volunteer Services office or call (6098).
