EARLY VOICES: IRVIN & DOT WEAVER
Through 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who knew the Weaver Family or were involved in the beginnings of Garden Spot Village. Irvin and Dot Weaver offer insight on what it was like to work for and relate to the Victor Weaver family.
Written by Avery Stauffer, Marketing Intern
Irvin and Dot Weaver moved to Garden Spot Village in May 2019 after living just 3 miles away in East Earl, for over 50 years. Irvin worked for Victor Weaver as a computer programmer and systems analyst for 27 years. He trained on the job doing the data processing starting in 1963. Irvin explains that while he did not work very closely with him daily, Victor was known to be a very caring and humble employer who made all of his employees feel appreciated. “They were the best working years of my life” says Irvin, “I really enjoyed my job.” Victor was also described as a very family oriented individual. Dot, niece to Victor, mentions how family gatherings were always important to the Weavers, especially on Sundays. Aside from their Sunday afternoon visits, the extended family would get together for reunions, multiple times a year. She remembers that when she was younger, during visits to Victor’s home, Dale Weaver would take her and the other cousins through the chicken processing plant. “It was always fun going over to the Weaver house for a meal!” explains Dot. When planning to move after retirement, Irvin and Dot knew Garden Spot Village was the right place for them. Since they lived nearby for most of their lives, they were already familiar with the location and had connections in the area. Dot’s parents moved to Garden Spot in 1996, and when visiting, Irvin and Dot began to appreciate everything that Garden Spot had to offer. “We’ve never doubted our decision to move here!” says Dot. “The whole facility is great!” adds Irvin.

23RD ANNUAL
GOLF TUESDAY, TOURNAMENT JUNE 8 APPLECROSS COUNTRY CLUB
Tuesday, June 8, will be a special day when golfers gather to raise funds for the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund in order to help residents who, for reasons beyond their control, have exhausted their financial resources. The golf outing is always popular with corporate sponsors who want to help make a difference in the lives of older adults. At the tournament, golfers will have the opportunity to play golf on, one of only a few, Nicklaus designed courses in Pennsylvania. The layout at Applecross is unlike any other in the area, offering classic Nicklaus challenges, yet remaining playable for golfers of all abilities. The course blends magnificently into a landscape with breathtaking views of sparkling lakes and rolling countryside. The fun-filled day includes lots of prizes such as winning foursomes, closest to the pin, longest drive and straightest drive. If you would like to join corporate sponsors and play at this special event, please contact Janine Ziegler (6288) for a registration form. The cost for individual golfers is $160 per person with $18 being tax deductible. The cost includes greens fee and cart, range balls, lunch, snacks, dinner and tournament gift.
You're Invited! MOHI Mission Trip February 2022

CHO OSI NG TO MOVE I N SO ONER R AT H E R T H A N L AT E R
In late 2018, Myron and Mary Ann Slabaugh joined the Radar Screen, choosing a deluxe end carriage home. As future Garden Spot residents, Myron and Mary Ann took advantage of opportunities to connect with their future community through a trip to tour Gettysburg, home repair days with Good Works, open houses, special events and more. They soon decided that they wanted to move to Garden Spot sooner rather than later! They met with Kelly Sweigart, sales associate, and realized that a move to Sycamore Springs meant they could choose their lot, their home and their move date! Since moving to Sycamore Springs in March, Myron and Mary Ann have enjoyed getting to know their new neighbors and their new community.

LARRY KNEPPER THANK YOU
Larry Knepper is a gifted artisan whose medium is wood. Looking closely, you will find many items around the GSV campus which bear his imprint. Recently Larry began making crosses which fit neatly into the palm of one’s hand. While being pre-cut with a saw, they require considerable handwork. Larry supplies crosses to the chaplains who pass them to residents who may be encountering a significant challenge. Fitting the cross neatly into one’s palm reminds us that we are nestled into the hand of God. The cross of Jesus reminds us of his offer to share the challenges of life. Thank You Larry for a tangible reminder of God’s love and care!
“JUST” THINKING...
Consider the Racial Equity Journey for African Americans in America: Slavery 1619-1865, 246 years; The Civil War 1861-1865 and Reconstruction 1865-1877; The Jim Crow Era 1880-1965 and the Great Migration 1915-1970; The Civil Rights Movement mid 1950’s - late 1960’s; Post Civil Rights Movement. For a mindful practice: Take a moment to pause, pay attention to your thoughts, emotions and reactions. This is our American heritage. What is your intentional response, rather than simple reaction? Isabelle Wilkerson’s book “The Warmth of Other Suns” provides a thorough account of the Great Migration Era. Available in GSV library.

FALL PREVENTION TIP OF THE MONTH – Medication Management
The more medications you take, the greater your risk of experiencing a fall. A dosage change can also create dizziness, confusion, weakness or sleepiness. Always ask your doctor and/or pharmacist to explain possible side effects of a new medication. Monitor your health carefully following a change in your medication regimen and report concerns to your primary care physician. The free Blood Pressure/Ask-a-nurse clinic every Monday morning from 9-11am in the Gardens West Health Clinic (lower level, next to Wood Shop) is staffed by an RN from Continuous Home Care. The nurse is happy to take your blood pressure and answer questions related to medication management.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services
CARING CONNECTIONS OFFERS OPPORTUNITY TO BE A BLESSING TO OTHERS Written by Avery Stauffer, Marketing Intern
Garden Spot Village offers a great variety of volunteer opportunities, one of which is Caring Connections. The program started in May 2004 with retired nurse, Carol Wendel as the first coordinator. Currently, Marsha Dawson and Ruthann Ware are in charge of managing Caring Connections. The program aims to connect independent living volunteers with residents living at Meadow View or in skilled nursing. Once a resident is referred by a chaplain, family member or social worker, Ruthann matches one of the volunteer connectors with that specific resident, or connectee. Connectors are asked to visit with their connectee at least once a week and oftentimes this includes time looking at pictures, books and attending events like Caring Connections luncheons. Before Covid, Caring Connections would host various parties, luncheons and activities where volunteers and their connectees could meet with other pairs and enjoy each other’s company. These activities can be anything from walks through the Village Square to see the Christmas lights and decorations to attending events like Musical Memories. Because of Covid, Marsha and Ruthann say it was almost like starting over since they could no longer host events and other activities. During this time Marsha sent out notes encouraging connectors to reach out to their connectee whether that was sending a card, writing a letter, or making a phone call. Currently, there are about 40 Caring Connections volunteers; ten more volunteers plan to join after the most recent orientation. The orientation process includes testimonies from current volunteers and presentations from the chaplains and Melody Karick, the director of Meadow View. One of the major goals for the future of the program is to have a connector for each person living in Meadow View and the skilled nursing households. Caring Connections is a great way to build relationships and make an impact on another’s life. “It’s really a great volunteer job,” says Ruthann. “Their life stories are just amazing, and oftentimes the connectees have just as big of an impact on us as we do on them.” If you would like to get involved with Caring Connections reach out to Marsha (6667), Ruthann (6851), or Volunteer Services (6204) for more information.
