EARLY VOICES: ESTHER SIDEMAN
Throughout 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who helped to shape Garden Spot Village. Written by Samantha Stone, Marketing Intern
Esther Sideman recalls her first few years at Garden Spot Village with a special fondness. She moved into one of the six cottages located on Lilac Court, February 1996, and she shares very affectionate memories of the personable residents that moved into the surrounding cottages, happily ending her three-week stretch of living alone as the sole resident of Garden Spot Village. The time that Esther and her new neighbors spent together was invaluable to her- Memorial Day and Independence Day were celebrated with lively neighborhood picnics, and everyone would regularly check in on each other, enjoying time together over meals, games and conversation. Esther loved her beautiful cottage, the active staff members and the overall welcoming nature of Garden Spot Village. She also began to teach exercise classes three days a week, encouraging residents to walk, march, swim and play their way into a healthier lifestyle. After nearly 30 years as a nurse, Esther was no stranger to caring for people. “I had never taught an exercise class before,” she says with a laugh, “but I went for it anyway.” Residents were always approaching her and sharing their appreciation for her enthusiastic approach to wellness. Esther’s active involvement extended beyond wellness classes- she became a member of the Cottage Council, and throughout the years became involved in the arts, with a special place in her heart for beautiful, handmade quilts. One memory that is particularly special to Esther is that of the day she spent with the mayor of New Holland. The two of them sat down for breakfast together, then visited the New Holland waste treatment plant (“It’s more interesting than you’d think!” Esther reports) and the county jail. The day ended with an exciting ride home in a police vehicle, sirens wailing and lights flashing. She remembers all of the neighbors peering out of their windows and wondering what sort of trouble Esther had gotten herself into. The friendly nature of this close-knit community created a wonderful atmosphere that welcomed those moving into retirement. “I was very happy that I’d decided to move here. I made lots of friends, and we always had a good time. We were like a bunch of kids.” To those who have spent valuable time with Esther- nurse, teacher, mother, grandmother, and friend- it is obvious that she lives her life by a remarkable philosophy: “I may not have set the world on fire, but I hope I leave a spark.”

DEVELOPMENT
Linda Dodge, Director of Development
A CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY MIGHT BE FOR YOU As a resident of Garden Spot Village, you know how special it is to be part of an active, friendly and loving community. I have heard from residents how grateful they are to be living here and that it is important to give back, making a difference in the lives of others. One way you can give back with a legacy gift is through a Charitable Gift Annuity. Depending upon your age and other factors, you receive guaranteed, fixed payments for life. You can elect to receive these on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. A portion of these payments are also tax free. The year you submit your application, you receive an immediate tax deduction for a portion of your gift’s value. The minimum amount to start a Charitable Gift Annuity is $10,000. You can write a check, but you might find it beneficial to fund the CGA with appreciated stock. To learn more about Charitable Gift Annuities and to see a specific example based upon your age or the ages of you and your spouse, please contact Linda Dodge, Director of Development (6215) or 717.355.6215.
RESIDENT EXPERIENCE SURVEY We recently partnered with WeCare Connect for resident satisfaction surveys. On the anniversary of your move-in date, you will receive a survey via email. We appreciate your feedback, comments and involvement in this process. The survey will come from: NoReplyFeedback@gardenspotvillage.org The subject line will be: “Garden Spot Communities Survey is Ready for You.” We will also send text message and phone call reminders. For more information regarding the surveys, check the Resident Documents folder on CATIE.

T EMPORARY MOVES OFFER OP PORT UNI T Y TO EXP ERI ENCE G A R D E N S P O T V I L L AG E S O O N E R . Because the real estate market is so strong right
now, a number of people are exploring the opportunity to move temporarily to a Garden Apartment while they wait for a cottage, carriage home or VSA apartment. Our process for temporary moves has changed in recent years, so we want to make sure you are equipped with the most up-to-date information to share with your friends considering this type of move. • Taking a temporary space does NOT give you resident priority access to the home of your choice. • You do NOT have to pay the transfer fee when you move to your permanent home. • A temporary space is offered in as-is condition. The space will be professionally cleaned, including the carpets. • You will receive a full renovation when you move to your permanent home. Sales Associate Kelly Sweigart maintains a temporary radar screen for studios, one bedroom apartments and one bedroom apartments with a den. People who plan to move permanently to those spaces are offered the space first, but she has been able to accommodate temporary moves for a number of people over the past few months. Many times, people find that it’s great to be at Garden Spot Village in a temporary space because they can experience the abundant opportunities they have living with purpose in community and make connections with their new community, sooner. Occasionally, temporary moves become permanent as people enjoy the benefits of living in a smaller space and engaging more fully with the community.

JUST THINKING. . .
Racial Equality – Unity. There are many themes one could follow in discussing racial equality, unity being one of them. Three quotes on unity: 1) From a prayer by Erwin W. Lutzer (1941- ), Evangelical Christian pastor, teacher, author: “We pray that Your church, comprised of all races and backgrounds, may unite in singing Your praises and giving thanks to Your name. Teach us to love one another and to display the oneness for which our Savior prayed.” 2) Howard Thurman (1899-1981) Author, Philosopher, Educator, Civil Rights Leader. “To be in unity with the Spirit is to be in unity with one’s fellow people. Not to be in unity with one’s fellow people is thereby not to be in unity with the Spirit.” 3) Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
FALL BIBLE STUDY – SIGNIFICANT SCRIPTURES

These studies will be recorded weekly on Mondays at 10:30am and then replayed on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. All are welcome to join us in the Chapel for the live recordings as we envision that this study will be very interactive. VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services
Through 2020, despite a pandemic, 400 Garden Spot Village residents volunteered a total of 39,000 hours. Their commitment to volunteering, whether it be folding laundry, making quilts, helping the chaplains, delivering mail, driving the Jolly Trolley, proofreading Destination or helping customers in Linden or Share & Care, has made a significant impact on the community at Garden Spot Village. Garden Spot Village’s community culture encourages people to give selflessly of their time and talents. New residents regularly stop by Volunteer Services and say, “How can I get involved with volunteering?” They recognize the purpose they experience when they offer their time. The bonus? Volunteering at Garden Spot is fun! It’s an opportunity to meet new people while learning something new and doing something you love! Volunteer Services works to connect volunteers with meaningful volunteer assignments. Volunteer Services also works with departments throughout Garden Spot Village in order to create new opportunities for volunteers. As Garden Spot returned to hosting off-campus trips in 2021, Life Enrichment Director Colleen Musselman began to rethink the way her department supported local trips. As a result, she partnered with Volunteer Services to identify volunteers who may want to serve as the escort on local trips such as the Ice Cream Trail, Lunch Bunch and concerts. The new program has been a huge success!
Volunteer Services team includes Daryl Groff, Jodi Lefever and Amanda Feeg. Daryl says, “Because of the confident and competent work of Amanda and Jodi, my transition to the role of Volunteer Services Director went smoothly as we continue to expand and offer new opportunities to residents.”
In addition, when a resident approached Volunteer Services with a desire to help Campus Services, Daryl Groff, the director of Volunteer Services reached out to Scott Ruth, the director of Campus Services to find an appropriate assignment. As a result, the volunteer has taken responsibility for keeping the sidewalks around the main building clear of mulch and other debris. Another new volunteer opportunity is the Technology Assistance Group, or TAG. Through the leadership of Dave Starnes, a resident since March 2018, the group partnered with information technology (IT), to offer basic trouble shooting services to their neighbors. For example, if a resident calls and says, my TV isn’t working properly, IT will reach out to TAG and a member of the volunteer team will respond to the request. Daryl, who started at Garden Spot Village in December 2020, says, “Volunteer Services continues to expand. We are open to people offering suggestions and the opportunities we offer are driven by residents’ interests, passions and abilities.” “We are actively seeking to partner with other departments in order to offer new opportunities. Our An Evening With… Series is an opportunity for us to partner with other departments and showcase the ways residents can volunteer with those departments. We are here to serve the residents and Garden Spot Village and we continue to look for opportunities to do that,” Daryl adds. The Volunteer Services team also helps to oversee Linden and Share & Care. It constantly looks for new ways to build sales in the stores to increase giving to the Benevolent Fund. For example, introducing new product offerings and new opportunities to drive traffic to the stores.
