THE HISTORY OF
MEMORIAL DAY
Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers. During that first national celebration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.
“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”
- James A. Garfield May 30, 1868 Arlington National Cemetery
PUBLISHER Garden Spot Village OUR MISSION We will enrich the lives of older adults as an expression of Christ’s Love. EDITOR Colleen Musselman DESIGN Brandon Adams PROOF READERS Ruth Buehler, Juanita Fox ILLUSTRATIONS
This event was inspired by local observances of the day that had taken place in several towns throughout America in the three years after the Civil War. In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities observed Memorial Day, and several states had declared it a legal holiday. After World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of America’s wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States.
WHEN IS MEMORIAL DAY?
In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be celebrated on the last Monday of May. Several southern states, however, officially celebrate an additional, separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead, sometimes referred to as a Confederate Memorial Day: January 19 in Texas; third Monday in Jan. in Arkansas; fourth Monday in Apr. in Alabama and Mississippi; April 26 in Florida and Georgia; May 10 in North and South Carolina; last Monday in May in Virginia; and June 3 in Louisiana and Tennessee. Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually. MARKETING
Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer
A resident stopped me at the Business Expo and asked about the dates of the next Look & Learn. Apparently, all the flyers at the Resident Services Desk had been picked up. If I remember correctly she and her husband met a couple in a local retail store who were from Virginia. They had struck up a friendly conversation and the topic turned to Garden Spot Village. We went to the desk so I could get some more flyers and her husband asked if they could also have an information packet. They keep a packet in their car and they had given it to their new friends. Not only had they given the couple a Garden Spot Village information packet they mailed the Look & Learn flyer to them! Garden Spot has the most amazing residents. It’s no wonder so many people want to live here. A national consultant, who visits many retirement communities, was here recently for a seminar. Standing in Village Square she exclaimed, “This place is always so vibrant! I get to a lot of communities and many have large spaces like this but there is never anyone around, they are totally dead compared to here.” We tend to get so used to our environment. Everyday life for us is totally out of character for retirement communities in general. The vibrancy, the way you as residents live lives of purpose and opportunity is another reason that so many people want to live here. Thank you for being so engaged and so excited about where you live!

SOCIAL SERVICES CONTINUED A Thank You from Susan Kirby
As an Intern from Lancaster Bible College, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Social Services over the last eight months. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started, but I soon felt very welcomed and encouraged by those I’ve had the opportunity to talk with, learn from, and work alongside. I have appreciated learning how people living in retirement communities are coping, adjusting, learning and growing through all of life’s experiences. But even more, I have appreciated how friendly and encouraging everyone has been, whether meeting with you one-on-one, in a group or just saying “hi” when we pass each other in the hallway. Thank you!! I’ll be finishing my time here in May and am planning to graduate with my Master of Arts in Professional Counseling in December. Afterwards, I will be looking for a job where I can use my counseling degree. I’m not sure exactly what that job will be, but I know I can trust God to put me where He wants me. If you want to pray along with me to that end, that would be appreciated. Thank you for enriching my life, not just educationally, but personally!!
A Thank You from Mary Beth Dodson
When I was little, my dream was to be a geriatric doctor. I know that sounds like a funny dream for a seven-year-old to have but, the many experiences I had when visiting my great grandmother in assisted living, grew in me a fondness for older adults. As I approached high school and college, I realized that being a doctor would take years and years, I began to rethink my career choice. Knowing that I still wanted to be in a “helping” career, I decided to take a risk and enroll in a Social Work class at Lancaster Bible College. This class opened my eyes to the world of Social Work. I learned that my Christian values and my passion for others were perfectly in line with the six core values of the Social Work profession: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. From that first day of class forward, I knew that Social Work was a profession that I could love and thrive in, while allowing me to work with the population that I had always dreamed of! As I approach the last weeks of my internship at Garden Spot Village, I reflect on how thankful I am for a place that exemplifies the love of Christ, as well as, the Social Work core values. I am glad to have been placed in a community that stresses person-centered care. My experience has fostered a love for Social Work and for older adults. Thank you to staff and residents who have worked with me and taught me over these past eight months. You have shown me great kindness and patience as I learned the ropes of Garden Spot Village, Social Work and working in a helping profession.

WELLNESS
MAY IS ENVIRONMENTAL OR FOOTPRINT MONTH There are eight Facets in your Foundation for Wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family-Friends-Fun and Focus. Footprint: We may not think much about Environmental Wellness as part of an overall wellness plan, but the environment, and how you feel about it, can have a huge impact on the way you feel. Environmental Wellness encompasses not only your relationship with the planet and nature, but also your relationship with your personal surroundings. It is obvious that the eight facets of wellness are all interconnected. For instance, when your personal surroundings are well cared for, clean and organized, you experience a greater sense of comfort and satisfaction. It’s hard to feel good when your space is messy or disorganized. Caring for your home and other personal environments also help maintain a sense of personal care, affecting Emotional Wellness. On a larger scale, connecting with nature helps you feel more connected spiritually improving your Spiritual Wellness… Keeping the environment healthy helps other humans and other species, in turn, improving Social Wellness. And the examples of interconnectedness will go on and on forever. When you become aware of your footprint, you look at the world from a broader scale, from outside the box in which you live. It becomes hard not to get a sense of the bigger picture. The more aware you become, the more you will see. The more you see, the more empowered you become. For copies of the daily Footprint calendar, stop by the Welcome Center or Wellness Lobby.
