Elyse will present effective strategies for giving, including gifts of stock, charitable gift annuities, bequests, IRA charitable rollovers, IRA-qualified charitable distributions and donor-advised funds. We will also share the power of women and giving and look at creative ways to make gifts during this year’s ExtraGive event.

We’ll learn practical ways to make gifts that help now, gifts that give back, and gifts for the future. Elyse will be available to take your questions after the presentation. Get ready to learn and share.

Grace Fabian’s book, Outrageous Grace, was written from her experience of how God brought life out of death and forgiveness out of pain. Her husband, Edmund Fabian, a Bible translator in Papua New Guinea, was murdered at his desk by a man they called a friend. The chain of events that followed her husband’s senseless death transformed not only her life, but the lives of thousands of others, as translation was completed and two families now call each other brother and sister. She will share her story on Wednesday, October 5. Feel free to purchase your meal from the Harvest Table and enjoy lunch with others before her presentation.

MEDICARE PART DPRESCRIPTION DRUG PLANS

The Social Services team will provide complementary consultations for residents with Traditional Medicare who wish to review their Medicare D Prescription Drug plan during annual Open Enrollment.

Beginning October 1, you may schedule an appointment by calling Resident Services (6000). Consultations will take place in the Chapel Parlor. Please arrive promptly and bring all your medications in their original containers along with your Medicare, health insurance, and current prescription plan cards.

Please Note:

• Do not schedule a Medicare D appointment with Social Services if you have Rx coverage as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan or Retirement Benefit package. You will need to work through your retirement plan administrator or an insurance broker to prevent potential loss of benefits.

• If you utilize benefits from PACE/PACENET, it is also unnecessary to schedule an appointment with Social Services. The program will automatically assign a Medicare D plan to you.

Interested in completing your own Medicare D review but need a refresher on how to use Medicare’s website? Here are a few options to help:

1. Beginning on Monday, October 24, pick up a stepby-step paper guide to enrollment at Social Services.

2. Watch the step-by-step “Medicare Part D Tutorial” video posted in the Video Gallery on CATIE.

Garden Spot Village Social Services team will offer free, confidential, ten minute memory screens for residents on Monday, October 10. This is a part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s (AFA) National Memory Screening Program. The memory screen is a baseline for your benefit. Results will be sent with you and may be shared with your doctor at your discretion. Call Jenny Snyder (6259) to schedule an appointment.

STYROFOAM RECYCLERS

Have you ever unpacked a package and had bulky Styrofoam that just didn’t fit well in your trash? Or have you hosted a party and used Styrofoam plates? Did you know that you can easily recycle those items? Ed and Darlene Smith, Garden Spot Village residents since August 2014, established convenient drop off locations for waste Styrofoam around campus several years ago. Packaging, clean and rinsed Styrofoam cups and food service containers can be recycled here at Garden Spot Village. Just make sure that all items have the #6 recycling, polystyrene symbol on them. “We worked in plastics for years and we know Styrofoam can be recycled. There are only six locations in the United States that accept Styrofoam for recycling and one of the locations is in Leola. Why wouldn’t we recycle it?” Darlene says.

For years, Ed and Darlene faithfully transported the clean Styrofoam to Dart Container in Leola every few weeks. Earlier this year, at Ed and Darlene’s request, a team of volunteers joined them in their recycling and collection efforts. Dave Frank, Garden Spot Village resident since March 2012, Bruce James, Garden Spot Village resident since April 2021, Charlie Groff, Garden Spot Village resident since October 2017 and Carol and Bob Totten, Garden Spot Village residents since August 2020, stepped up to help. Each month a team of two volunteers gathers the Styrofoam, loads it into their vehicles and drives it to Dart Corporation’s recycling shed, located just six miles west on Route 23. Bruce, who spent 45 years in insurance and banking, says he volunteered for this position because it was an opportunity to meet new people and it keeps him engaged with his community. This is just one of the ways he volunteers at Garden Spot Village. Bob and Carol volunteered because they believe recycling is an important thing to do and they wanted to help keep the recycling happening. Carol says, “We stepped forward to help and others did too. This is a wonderful way to help the community, the environment, the world.”

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT SURVEY

Garden Spot Village is participating in a survey for U.S. News & World Report’s Best Senior Living designation Monday, October 3 through Sunday, October 16.

The Pennsylvania College of Art & Design offers a multitude of workshops for the community. Garden Spot Village is happy to collaborate in hosting three fall workshops.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING

OCTOBER 8, SATURDAY | 2-4pm, Pavilion

Teacher: Jason Ward

Plein Air painting takes us outdoors where we respond directly to what the landscape has to offer. Using acrylic paint, attendees explore, identifying a compelling composition, utilizing color, tone and atmospheric perspective to create a convincing sense of depth. Techniques for rendering specific features of the scene will also be covered.

The survey period will last for two weeks. Residents will be invited to participate in a short 10-minute survey. Results of the survey will be shared with Garden Spot Village and the public in Spring 2023.

Join us for 30 minutes of walking forward, backwards, sideways and more. Like all water exercises, water walking is easy on the joints. “The water’s buoyancy supports the body’s weight, which reduces stress on the joints and minimizes pain,” says the Arthritis Foundation “And it’s still a great workout. Water provides 12 times the resistance of air, so as you walk, you’re really strengthening and building muscle.” You do not bear weight while swimming and walking, however, so you will still need to add some bone-building workouts to your routine.
