5 Examples of Plant Art That Will Blow Your Mind
Introduction Art is diverse, interesting, and continues to innovate as time moves forward. Plants and nature have always been popular subjects for artists inspiring beautiful still lives, landscapes, and more. However, what about art and art installations that actually utilize live plants in their creation? Botanical art, also more simply known as plant art, is rising in popularity almost as a response to rising modernism and industrial style. Biophilic design is taking over in interior plant design, home design, and now art as well! Let’s look at 5 examples of plant art that go beyond still lives and go into real life.
1. Green Walls Green walls are wall installations that are made up completely of live plants. This can include succulents, mosses, and other types of green plants. These are common offerings for office plant services and have become common in modern and upscale office spaces. These beautiful green walls give office workers the benefits of greenery in the office (which can boost productivity and reduce stress!) while also providing something a bit different from the standard office wall art.
2. Philodendron Xanad by Ruben Bellinkx This innovative and unique plant installation by the Belgian artist Ruben Bellinkx is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. This installation must be specifically designed for each space it’s in. It looks like a standard philodendron plant placed next to a wall. However, what’s interesting is that the artist designs the wall it’s next to to allow the plant to appear like it’s growing through the wall. Check it out here. This plant art is so interesting and unique that it’s bound to start conversations.
3. EXOBIOTANICA 2 In another ambitious and interesting project called EXOBIOTANICA 2, artist and botanist Makoto Azuma created beautiful floral arrangements that were then lifted into space (yes, space!) where they were then photographed. These surreal and beautiful photos push the boundaries of art and create such an interesting dichotomy of cold and lifeless space compared to luscious and lively floral arrangements. Check it out here.
4. Into Nature: Out of Darkness by Alicja Kwade Alicja Kwade is a self-described contemporary visual artist from Germany. Many of her sculptures and installations focus on nature, time, geometry, space, and spatial arrangements of natural materials. One of her simplest, and most impactful, sculptures is called Into Nature: Out of Darkness. This features a planet-like sphere of rock in the middle of a natural path through the forest. However, the art of this sculpture is just as much the natural location with the trees, dirt, pathway, and more. The surreal look of the spherical and planetary rock clashes with the natural surroundings and again clashes with our standard belief of what a boulder looks like. Such an interesting and simple sculpture with intricate meanings, symbolism, and impact on viewers.
5. Fly Away by Rashid Johnson If you’re looking for plant art, Fly Away by Rashid Johnson is an installation that contains over 250 individual plants. This amazing plant art & installation includes a structure to contain all of the plants and includes live music alongside the sculpture. All of the pots along with the structure itself was made by Johnson. The installation includes a space for a piano and a live performance included as well. Johnson often combines music and art and says that this installation is truly meant to be an experience that makes you feel alive and inspired.
