NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR “Universality, I think, emerges from truthful identity of what is.” This comment was made by Lorraine Hansberry in a radio interview with Studs Terkel in 1959 while discussing why A Raisin in the Sun, while obviously being a groundbreaking Black play, managed to transcend the racial divide and reach a much wider and diverse set of theatergoers. More than anything, perhaps, it is this need to ensure this production is a ‘truthful identity of what is’ that has guided my hand in putting it on the Garden stage. What was true in the 1950s setting the author crafted? What is true today? Where are those truths the same, and where have they differed? What does the universality of these characters still have to say to us, and make this not only a pertinent piece for presentation in 2021, but also a catalyst for change so desperately called for in ever-increasing volume in these turbulent times? I resonate with these characters and their stories, not because I share any particular character’s background (as Ms. Hansberry herself freely admitted to as well), but rather because these characters all have dreams. Individual dreams. Family dreams. Dreams of a better life for themselves and their children. Dreams wherein the “American Dream” was both attainable and relevant. This production is a dream for me – the first Black female director to produce the first production written by a Black female playwright on a major Central Florida stage. I admit it gives me hope. Hope that issues long left ineffectively addressed in our industry (and elsewhere) will

be drug out into the light of day. Hope that empowerment and equality will allow all to be evaluated on their merits and achievements, as opposed to their color or sex. I unashamedly tell you I wept this year at the inauguration as I was able to honestly say to my daughters for the very first time, “See, you can become whatever you choose to become.” This is what the characters in today’s play were striving for in their hoping and dreaming as well; and it is in this truthful identity and owning of ourselves and our personal hopes and dreams that we imbue these characters we portray with the universality this play deserves. Today we celebrate our stories, and joyfully draw the circle wide enough to include each of you as we acknowledge your inclusion in the celebration. It is a dream come true. It is the hope so many of us have longed for. And, it is freeing. In discussing A Raisin in the Sun with the New York Times Ms. Hansberry said that “one of the reasons I feel so free is that I belong to a world majority, and a very assertive one.” That was over sixty years ago, and much like Mama Younger she likely knew she would never see all her dreams fulfilled. It is likely I might not either. Yet, perhaps for my daughters it will be. That is why this play matters. That is why these characters matter. That is why we each matter. It is our truthful identity, and I thank you for pondering that as you witness today’s production. Roberta Emerson, Director

Who’s Who in The Cast BOBBIE BELL (Karl Lindner) is happy to again serve the Garden Theatre. His previous work here was directing 1984 and performing the role of Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Bobbie has worked for the past 38 years in Central Florida as a director, actor, playwright, composer, and teacher. His most recent work elsewhere was acting in Jeremy Seghers’ The Bacchae and composing three hours of original music for Mad Cow Theatre’s The Women of Pompeii project. He dedicates his work to friends and mentors Dr. Annye Refoe and Dr. Stephen Wright with a special shout out to young Noah for whom the world awaits. AMBRIA M. BENJAMIN (Beneatha Younger) is a senior in the Montverde Academy Theatre Conservatory. Whether collaborating with a cast on stage, or a creative team behind the scenes, Ambria treasures the opportunity to engage in theatre any way she can. Of the many roles she’s played, her favorites are: the title character in The Drowsy Chaperone, Jovie in Elf: The Musical, Francine/Lena in Clybourne Park, and Minnie Fay in Hello, Dolly! (Garden Theatre). DURELL R. BROWN (Walter Lee Younger) started his journey back into the world of theater in November 2019 at the Playwrights Roundtable in Orlando acting in Sheba as the title character and in The Satin Worshippers as Buster. Not long after, Durell was cast in the film Unity: Bittersweet Symphony playing Deacon Rogers where he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Orlando Independent Film Festival. During Halloween 2020, Durell played Sarge at the Tunnel of the Damned Haunted Experience. Once a month, Durell can be seen playing a different character in Something New Studio’s murder mystery shows. So far Durell has played Mayor Holland Opus in Calling Elizabeth, Chuck Salvadorin in The Ferry Boat, and Vito Marscapone in A Family Affair. Durell’s most recent work was playing Felix/Moriarty in The Game’s Afoot and Dale in Outpost. He is extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of A Raisin in the Sun. DA’ZARIA HARRIS (Ruth Younger) Da’Zaria Harris (formerly known as Danielle Harris) is a Florida-based actress. After graduating from American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC she has performed in many productions. Some performances include Once on This Island at Theater West End, Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees at Universal Studios Orlando, Brightstar Touring Theatre’s Black History National Tour, her recent performance as Truvy Jones in St. Luke’s Theater production of Steel Magnolias, and her latest appearance as Julia Felix in Women of Pompeii, a production by Mad Cow Theater in partnership with the Orlando Museum of Art and Orlando Science Center’s exhibit “Pompeii: The Immortal City.” She is beyond grateful to be back on stage in her debut performance here at Garden Theatre and honored to tell such a powerful story. continued on page 9

Who’s Who in The Cast JADE L. JONES (Lena Younger) is a singer and actress. With a passion for entertainment, she rejoined the community theatre family with Cultural Fusion’s production of Crowns. She has successfully portrayed Celestina Warbeck in Universal Studios’ Diagon Alley. Jade debuted her first lead role with Athens Theater in Deland as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act. This UCF graduate is a native Floridian with a passion for the arts, and seeks to make a positive impact in the entertainment community. She was recently named among Matt Palm’s Best of 2020 actresses. After spending most of 2019 with Garden Theatre, Jade is happy to be back home! KADESH LEWIS (Bobo / Mover) is so pleased to be returning to the Garden Theatre stage in this amazing production of A Raisin in the Sun! You may remember him in a few past productions, such as Matilda and Hello, Dolly!. When he is not on stage, you can be sure he is working diligently in the wings. Kadesh spends his days building the sets for Theatre Winter Haven shows and as a scenic carpenter for entertainment complexes across the country. He would like to give a special thanks to Roberta, Joe, the production staff, and the Garden Theatre for giving him this opportunity, along with the cast and crew for being truly amazing! Enjoy the show! OMARI PERNELL (Travis Younger) is very excited to be a part of this production of such an instrumental play. He is a fourth grade, straight A student at Renaissance Charter School at Crown Point. Omari has been seen around Central Florida in productions of Mary Poppins as Michael Banks, Big Fish as Little Will, The Lion King as Little Simba, Children of Eden, Aladdin Jr. as Iago, and Seussical Jr. as the Mayor. He also enjoys reading, dancing, and playing video games. Omari would like to thank his parents and Grammy for all of their love and support. MACKENLEY RIA (George Murchison / Mover) is currently a senior at the University of Central Florida in the B.F.A. Musical Theatre program. This is his Garden Theatre debut! He was last seen doing a virtual reading in UCF’s production of How to Catch Creation. Other theatre credits include Singin’ in the Rain (Sound Engineer/Ensemble), Kill Move Paradise (U/S Daz, U/S Tiny), In the Heights (Ensemble), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Twimble/Wally Womper), and more. Other than being a triple threat, Mackenley has also been honing his craft in piano and music composition. He hopes to one day gain another degree in music production and create his own songs.

Who’s Who in The Cast MATTHEW ZENON (Joseph Asagai / Mover) is a theatre student at UCF and is thrilled to be back at the Garden. Asagai is a dream role for Zenon. This is because of the character’s complexity and what Asagai symbolizes in terms of the struggle. Zenon would like to thank his friends, family and God for always supporting him - even when he’s acting a fool.

Who’s Who in The Production Team ROBERTA EMERSON (Director) is a Director, Actor and Producer, and teacher among many other hats she proudly wears. She is a graduate of both the University of Minnesota with a B.F.A. in Acting and Theatre Management and New York University with an M.F.A. in Acting. She has worked as an actor and director in many regional theaters around the country, has done extensive voice over commercial and film work, and has been a teaching artist both stateside and in Europe. She is currently the Director of Theatre for Montverde Academy’s Theatre Conservatory and is repped by Lock Talent. TRAMAINE BERRYHILL (Scenic Designer) is a Miami native with 15 years of creating live experiences. His recent design work has been in the live meetings and corporate events industry. “I am looking forward to being back in the Theatre. I like to think of scenery as building playhouses out of the ideas of playwrights, directors, and designers. We create a three dimensional, functional space for us to play in. A space where as we play, artists further develop and analyze the relationships, economics, injustices, happiness, and pains that we experience in our communities. As an active member in my community I want to have a direct effect on the advancement of our craft, because of its power in the community.” KATHY WIEBE (Lighting Designer) is a contracted Technical Director for Norwegian Cruise Lines show Elements and Blazing Boots in the Star Dust Theater. Past credits: Technical Director for Montverde Academy, Lighting Design for Jolly Holidays in the round at Walt Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Lighting Design for the Polynesian Luau at the Walt Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Technical Director, and Lighting Designer for Orlando’s Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance of Back to Broadway. Kathy is very excited to be part of this relevant show at the Garden Theatre! KAT HENWOOD (Costume Designer) is delighted to be working on her first production at Garden Theatre. Her work was most recently seen at Mad Cow Theatre in Last Train to Nibroc and The Spitfire Grill. Some of her favorite productions include The White Snake with ReAct Theater, Clybourne Park at Montverde Academy, and Pippi Longstocking with Bellevue Youth Theatre. She looks forward to many more productions with Garden Theatre in the future! ANTHONY NARCISO (Sound Designer / Original Music) is a Sound Designer and Composer based out of Orlando, FL. Who’s Who in The Production Team designer. He previously served as sound designer for the Texas Shakespeare Festival from 20132018. Recent credits include Vote? and Pete the Cat at Orlando REP; Children of Eden and Mary Poppins at St Luke’s; Hello, Dolly! and Ugly Lies the Bone at Garden Theatre; and Bring it On the Musical at Auburn University. Anthony is a proud member of United Scenic Artists. ANTHONY MARSHALL (Associate Sound Designer / Original Music) is a sound engineer and designer from Orlando, FL. He is part of the Orlando Repertory Theatre staff as the Lighting and Sound Coordinator. In addition to The REP, Anthony has worked with Valencia College, Theatre at St. Luke’s, The Master’s Academy, and Loxen Productions. Recent credits include In the Heights, Mary Poppins, and #ENOUGH. ERICA FELTON (Properties Master) got her start in theatre as a scenic carpenter apprenticing at Ocean State Theatre Company in Rhode Island and Hartford Stage Company in Connecticut. She also graduated locally from Dr. Phillips High School in 2016 under the direction of Roberta Emerson. She has accomplished internships with Cirque Du Soleil, Walt Disney World, Universal Creative, and more and is excited to be back home in Orlando! KALI PIERCE (Assistant Stage Manager) is thrilled to be joining the team at the Garden Theatre! Recently Kali has been the resident Stage Manager at Theater West End since summer of 2019. She has also enjoyed working at the Norwegian Cruise Line Creative Studios, the Orlando Repertory Theatre, SeaWorld Orlando, and Walt Disney World. DAVID CLENNEY (Master Electrician) has been a part of the Garden since La Cage aux Folles, and is working on his 32nd show with the company. Who’s Who in The Production Team JUSTIN HARMON (Carpenter) is excited to build another set for the Garden Theatre! Justin graduated from Valencia College’s Entertainment Design & Technology program in 2018. Justin also freelances around Orlando, working many shows at multiple venues and music festivals. In his free time, Justin enjoys bowling and playing video games. AMBER TEICHER (Scenic Artist) has been a scenic artist in Orlando for the last 10 years. Her work can be seen at many theaters throughout Florida including the Orlando Repertory Theatre and Orlando Shakes, as well as Universal Studios and Disney. She recently painted a mural for Atlanta Aquarium and worked on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This is her first show at the Garden and she is excited to be here. GABE GUTIERREZ (Costume Crew Chief) This is Gabe’s third production at the Garden Theatre! Other dresser credits include Hello, Dolly! and Matilda (Garden Theatre) and Pete the Cat (Orlando REP). Gabe works full time at Universal in Entertainment Costuming while studying at Valencia College for an Entertainment Production Design degree.

Rebecca Roper Proscenium Arch There is a physical space in the theatre that serves as a bridge between the audience and the actors. It is called a proscenium arch - a gateway and connector. The proscenium of the Garden is named in honor of our Founding Board President’s 18 years of volunteer service, leadership and a passion for the arts that changed a community.

Seating policy – All late seating will be at the discretion of the House Manager and cannot be guaranteed. Please arrive early. House Rules – Any photography, audio, or video recording of this performance is strictly prohibited. House management reserves the right to remove disruptive guests. No outside food or drink; no concessions will be offered at this performance. Accessibility – Kindly arrange any special needs, including wheelchair accessible seating, with the Box Office staff. House management will provide assisted listening devices and large print playbills upon request. Returns and Exchanges – There are no refunds on tickets to Garden Theatre events. All sales are final. There is a $5 exchange fee on ticket orders. Ticket exchanges must be made at least 24 hours prior to the performance. No credit will be given. Subscribers are exempt from this fee. Restrooms – Restrooms are located on the second floor via the grand staircase through the double doors near concessions.
