A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR ON THEATRE ETIQUETTE AND BELONGING Come on in the room. You, belong here. This theatre. This shared sacred space. A place for viewing. To bear witness and to feel. I invite you to first - feel free. Free to bring your whole self into this room. We hold space for your laughter and your delight / your grief and your healing / your introspection and your deep breathing. I encourage you to give in to the rhythms of a collective breath. We hold space for any needed sighs, moans, and “amens”. This story is both Sunday morning Baptist pew and Friday night jook joint. You have permission to sway, rock, clasp or lift your hands in agreement. There is freedom in movement. This work is somatic abolitionism. But know, your freedom should not disrupt the art. Live theatre is where our storytellers, our griots appreciate the energy but not the distractions. With that in mind, please no policing of others. Your neighbor has the right to experience this work in a way that is authentic and inherent, just as you do. This is the culture of our community. You, all of you are WORTHY of this space and everything that it has to offer. Belong, here. With Love and Liberation, Felichia Chivaughn

My unending gratitude to playwrights Dominique Morisseau for bravely initiating and communicating rules of engagement to her audiences and Erika Dickerson Despenza who followed suit, inspiring me to create my own.

SPECIAL THANKS Garden Theatre would like to thank these extraordinary partners, without whom this production of The Mountaintop would not be possible: Abby, our Protectress of Health; FX Design Group; 1st Choice Door & Millwork; Toole’s Ace Hardware; and the City of Winter Garden. There will be no intermission. Please note that this production utilizes strobes. As a courtesy to our performers and audience members, please mute and put away all cell phones and other personal electronic devices during the show. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited within the building. Please keep your belongings out of the aisles as actors may be entering or exiting through the house. To best protect the health and safety of everyone at the Garden, masks are required to be worn at all times inside the building. When in public areas such as the lobby and restrooms, please distance yourself from other guests.

The Garden Theatre acknowledges that we occupy the ancestral lands of the Timucua and Seminole people, who are the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live, and recognize their continuing connection to the land, water, and air that Garden Theatre consumes. We pay respect to the Timucuans, Seminoles, and to their elders past, present, and emerging.

DANIEL MILLS APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM Garden Theatre is honored to house the William Daniel Mills Apprenticeship Program. Harold and Rosy Mills selected the Garden to launch this new apprenticeship program for young diverse artists ages 13 through 22. This generous gift and program was created to honor the memory of their beloved son Daniel Mills, who tragically passed away in 2020. The program, which launched this month, will potentially expand to other arts organizations in Central Florida. For the 2021-22 Season, the Garden accepted 30 apprentices in areas of performance, directing, design/tech, playwriting, stage management, and education. Apprentices take Garden Theatre Education masterclasses, camps, and classes at no cost, in addition to attending rehearsals, performances, and other events also at no cost. Apprentices will also be considered for paid opportunities working on Garden Theatre mainstage productions. “Theatre brought joy to Daniel’s life, and the study of theatre was his passion. He committed himself to learning techniques, styles, and ideologies. He was a true student of the trade. This program’s education and experiential learning focus is a wonderful way to honor our beautiful Daniel,” says the Mills family. The Garden would like to thank the Mills Family for entrusting us to keep Daniel’s legacy thriving in our arts community. The Garden Theatre’s apprentices will be led by Education Director Nick Bazo, Associate Artistic Director Roberta Emerson, and Artistic Director Joseph C. Walsh.
