Ugly Lies the Bone
Note from the Director This season at The Garden the theme is home. Ugly Lies the Bone follows Jess, a female Army veteran who has been severely burned and wounded in the Afghanistan War, as she returns home to Titusville, Florida with hopes of fitting back into the life she left behind. But at home everything and everyone has changed, almost as much as she has. As she submits to virtual reality game therapy, designed to treat veterans with acute pain, she realizes that as difficult as it is to heal on the outside, the harder work is the emotional healing she must do on the inside. The playwright Lindsey Ferrentino believes “it’s important to see plays about our time in our time” and I couldn’t agree more. Like many U.S. veterans today, Jess wages a heroic battle as she fights her way back into a new identity of herself in the place she calls home. I want to thank Joseph Walsh and the entire Garden team for doing this play right now and for inviting me in. Currently our days require extraordinary care and this Garden Theatre design and production team and this cast and crew have worked diligently to transform this script to the stage. Their commitment to honor Jess and through her the story of U.S. veterans of all ages and wars, is inspiring and apt. I want to say a special thank you to Ryan Darley, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, for your service overseas and for sharing some of those experiences and insights with us. You opened my heart to the reality of being a veteran of those wars and it’s my hope this play will do the same for our audience. Theatre exists in the spaces between actors and audience so thank you all for being here especially now to experience this journey with us. It wouldn’t be happening without you. Sincerely,
Trudy Bruner, Director SPECIAL THANKS Garden Theatre would like to thank these extraordinary partners, without whom this production of Ugly Lies the Bone would not be possible: Katrina Ploof; Ryan Darley; Orlando REP; Winter Garden Pizza Company; Gary Sinise Foundation; Camaraderie Foundation; FX Design Group; 1st Choice Door & Millwork; Toole’s Ace Hardware; Signing Shadows; and the City of Winter Garden.
