Celebrate our pioneer past. The area’s snow-covered forests are ideal winter destinations for outdoor activities from soft adventures to rugged expeditions.

Enjoy not only the beautiful snowy setting we call home, but partake of thenatural scenic views, tubing, snowmobiling, skiing, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, wildlife viewing, hot-pooling -and winter celebrations -large and small.

Only One Hour From Boise

Cross country skiing, one of the most popular winter sports, continues to grow in the area. Backcountry treks are available on miles of public land with trails winding through spectacular scenery.

By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Banks. From there, take the Banks-Lowman Road to Lowman (be sure and stop in Garden Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

Since the early days of homesteading, community building and frontier taming, Boise County neighbors, Garden Valley, Lowman, Idaho City, Placerville, Banks and Horseshoe Bend have grown up and out. The County Communities extend far beyond the river valleys.

The county is home to several thousand residents, and has become a tourist destination as well for those seeking a down-home feeling while remaining central to active pursuits, services and leisure alike.

Idaho City

Idaho City Area Offers Outstanding Nordic Skiing Opportunities

All trails in this system are marked by 5” x 7” blue reassurance diamonds (blue blazes). The trails are nonmotorized during snow months. Some of the trails are groomed and some are not (see map on web - http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov). For winter use, the trails are generally rated More Difficult or Most Difficult for skiing under good snow conditions. There are some short steep sections with sharp turns requiring advanced skiing techniques.

Banner Ridge Park N’ Ski (Dogs allowed on ungroomed trails only)

If you like to crank out the miles on your skis, backcountry ski or cruise around on snowshoes either on-trail or off-trail, the Banner Ridge area is packed with opportunity and fun. It’s a pretty steep 1.3-mile climb from the trailhead to the ridge, but once you’re on top, there are many loops, big views and open bowls to enjoy from there.

The Beaver Creek Summit Park N’ Ski Parking Area Trail (Dogs allowed year-round)

This ungroomed out-and-back trail is designed especially for backcountry Nordic folks, whether on skis or snowshoes. You’ll understand how it got its name after you make your way to the top of Stargaze Point (1.5 miles one way) where you’ll find a 360 degree view of the Boise National Forest that includes Pilots Peak, Wilson Butte, Sunset Peak, Rock Creek and Scott Mountain. At over 6,500 feet, it’s the perfect Telemark skiing on many north and west facing slopes where there is deep powder most winter seasons.

The Gold Fork Park N’ Ski (Dogs allowed year-round)

The Gold Fork Park N’ Ski area provides access to two complete trail systems on either side of Hwy 21. One trail tours the Gold Fork area, the other loops the Skyline area and connects to the greater Banner Ridge/Beaver Creek trail systems. A separate ungroomed snowshoe trail tours a ridge in the Gold Fork area. There’s also a short snowshoe trail from the Skyline yurt. This is a great place to take kids for an easy, low key outing..

Idaho City

The Whoop-Um-Up Park N’ Ski (Dogs allowed year-round)

• 18m N of Idaho City off Hwy 21

• Beginner-Intermediate

• 6.6 miles

• Not Groomed

• Rocky Ridge Yurt

• Restroom

• Snowshoers with dogs love Whoop-Um-Up because this is one of the areas where dogs are welcome. Dogs are also welcome in the Rocky Ridge yurt. Be aware that the parking area is shared with snowmobiles, so you will encounter snow machines as you gear up for your adventure. Trails can be a bit rugged in this area with a few steep and challenging downhill sections along the creek trail.

After the gold rush quieted, the city became a prosperous ranching and logging community. The railroad, from Emmett up to Long Valley following the Payette River (its North Fork above Banks), was completed in 1913. However, the railroad is not currently in use.

The town’s current culture is a blend of ranching and is a growing bedroom community for Boise.

Kirkham Hot Springs

Kirkham Hot Springs is located next to the South Fork Payette River just east of Lowman, Idaho, along State Highway 21 at an elevation of 4,000 feet. Visitors enjoy soaking in popular Kirkham Hot Springs on the banks of the river and exploring the scenic Kirkham Ridge Trail.

Kirkham Hot Springs is open for DAY USE ONLY from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm and NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING. Visitors will approach a locked gate, then cross the bridge to enter the site.

Natural Features:

The area offers little shade, though a few Ponderosa pines are scattered throughout the site. The site can be very hot and sunny during the summer. Wildflowers dot the landscape.

Recreation:

Kirkham Hot Springs is located at the river’s edge. A trail leads down to the soaking pools and small steaming waterfalls. Take caution walking on rock surfaces near the hot springs. They are uneven and can be slick when wet.

Pets are welcome. Please keep them leashed at all times and away from the hot spring pools and runoff areas.

The South Fork Payette River offers whitewater rafting, kayaking and trout fishing. The Deadwood and Danskin River Access areas are nearby on the road to Garden Valley. Kirkham Ridge Trail is one of the Lowman Ranger District’s premier trails. It begins less than 1/4-mile away and stretches through beautiful country for 35 miles, connecting with many other trails in the area. It is open to hiking, mountain biking and horses. Sections of the trail are open seasonally to off-road vehicles.
