The Finn Panton case

Punk songwriter, guitarist, vocalist and frontman. Formed Seeds Of 77, was one of the founding members of D'Ska Assassins and a member of non-nonsense Punk band Menace. He helped out so many bands by putting them on for their earliest proper gigs; Snuff, The Levellers and Creaming Jesus among others. Finn has always been described as a fantastic player and gave his all in every performance. A brilliant front man, one of the best frontmen in the punk rock business.

Unfortunately, Finn passed away last year (August 2022) and Gardiner Houlgate are pleased to offer a selection of Guitars and Equipment used by Finn (live and in the studio) on behalf of his Family.

*Acquired by the vendor from Micky Moody, via his father Bob Lewis, a Twickenham musician best known as 'Doctor Bob and the Nurses'

Many musicians guested in Bob's band including Scott Gorham from Thin Lizzy. Bob was well acquainted with many musicians including The Strawbs, Ray Majors of 'Mott' and John Edwards (Status Quo). Micky Moody connected with Bob when he was looking for an amp for his son as a young gigging guitarist and it is understood that Micky sold the amp as, by then, he was only using it for warming up offstage

Interestingly, the amp is the same model that Bernie Marsden used in the studio with Whitesnake on the 'Saints and Sinners' album. This amp was offered for sale at Gardiner Houlgate, ex-lot 524 - The Bernie Marsden Collection, on 10th December 2022. Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden were both guitarists on this album and it is likely that Micky acquired and used this amplifier around a similar time £1000-2000

Chris Rea - studio used and stage played 1976 Fender Hardtail Stratocaster electric guitar, made in USA, ser. no. 714655; Body: threetone sunburst finish, many dings to edges and contour arm wear as to be expected for a used guitar of this age; Neck: maple, minor ding to back; Fretboard: maple; Frets: mild wear with visible indent wear to first position; Electrics: working, replacement switch (original retained); Case: early 1960s Selmer hard case (missing covering and other damages); Weight: 4.41kg; Overall condition: good for age

*Purchased new by Chris Rea from Hamilton's Music Store in Middlesbrough, circa 1977 and used extensively to recording his first two albums 'Whatever Happened to Benny Santini' (1978) and 'Deltics' (1979). Chris played this guitar in an E tuning, mostly with a slide, which worked particularly well with this guitar due to the maple neck and out of phase toggle position which gives a tighter sound. During the recording of Rea's third album 'Tennis' (1979), he acquired his pink 1962 Fender Stratocaster from John Deacon of Queen. The 1976 Fender Stratocaster was then used by Chris' guitarist at the time, Dave Burton, who recorded with the guitar on the Tennis album at Chipping Norton Studios. Chris can be seen using the guitar at the Theatre de l'Empire, Paris, April 1979, alongside Dave Burton, his live guitarist at the time. Dave is later seen using the guitar in the video for 'Tennis', that the band recorded for the German TV show 'Rockpop' in 1979, where by now Chris is using his 'new' pink Fender Stratocaster. Chris then gave the Stratocaster to Dave in August 1980, at the end of the last tour with the original band. Sold with a signed statement of provenance from Dave Burton.

Chris used this guitar on his first album 'Whatever Happened to Benny Santini', specifically on 'Dancing with Charlie' for the slide guitar work which he multi-tracked to produce a thicker sound. Footage from the Theatre de l'Empire, Paris April 1979, show Dave using this Gibson Les Paul Special alongside Chris Rea. The guitar was also used by Dave in the Melody Maker Rockpop Contest in 1978, where his band 'The Losers' won. Rick Parfitt and Johnny Hallyday - 1975 Gretsch White Falcon 7593 hollow body electric guitar, made in USA, ser. no. 1-5095; Body: white finish, surface scratches, minor dings and general play wear as to be expected for age; Neck: various minor dings, some finish touching-in; Fretboard: ebony; Frets: minor wear; Electrics: working; Hardware: generally good, although tarnishing and loss to gold plating; Case: original hard case; Weight: 4.44kg; Overall condition: good for age

*Purchased by Dave Burton in 1983 from Rick Parfitt of Status Quo. Dave was a retained member of Chris Rea's band from 1978-1980 and played occasionally on short tours in the 1980s. He also had a song writing development deal with Phonogram The sale was arranged by former Status Quo manager Ian Jones who later became manager and a personal friend of Dave Burton. When Ian received the guitar, Rick stated that it had previously been owned by renowned French musician Johnny Hallyday.

Photographs show Johnny Hallyday with a Gretsch White Falcon electric guitar during the late 1970s and it is thought that this is the same guitar. Sold with two statements of provenance from Dave Burton and Ian Jones. Ian, who is still a close friend of Francis Rossi of Status Quo, states that he has discussed the guitar with him and he confirms that Rick was an acquaintance of Johnny Hallyday. Johnny gave the guitar to Rick during a trip to Paris in 1981. Ian recalls that although the guitar was never used by Rick live, it was carried with the band on tour, used in the hotel and dressing room and occasionally during sound checks.

388. Pete Townshend (The Who) - owned and used 1989 Takamine FP-360SC electroacoustic guitar, made in Japan, ser. no. 89020364; Back and sides: rosewood, marks and wear showing general signs of use; Top: natural spruce, dings and marks from general play; Neck: a few dings and marks; Fretboard: rosewood, visible play wear; Frets: visible and general play wear throughout; Electrics: working; Hardware: good; Case: fitted hard case; Overall condition: good/used

*Formerly owned by Pete Townshend of The Who and one of many Takamine acoustic guitars that were used during his early endorsement period between 1986 and 1993. The FP360SC cutaway Takamine's being the primary model Pete favoured and used on stage.

Inherited by the vendor from his friend 'Robert' who became acquainted with Pete Townshend in the 1990s. Following a break in at Robert's flat, where he had several possessions stolen, including his guitar, Pete kindly gifted this Takamine to him, knowing that he couldn't afford to replace his guitar himself.

After Roberts passing, the vendor decided to research his friends account of being gifted the guitar by Pete. He wrote a letter and hand delivered it under his door on Saturday 28th July 2018. The following day he received a response via Pete's PA, Nicola Joss. In the email, Pete recalls gifting the guitar, remembering Robert as "a sweet man" and commenting on his passing that it was "such a pity that he didn't make it". Pete also explains that he did use Takamine's on stage for a while, although he unfortunately did not keep serial numbers. A digital photograph of this email is included in the sale.

Two years later, the vendor sent Pete another email dated Tuesday 17th November 2020, asking him if he would autograph his email to act as some proof that this guitar was indeed gifted to Robert; a reply was received, again from Pete's personal assistant Nicola Joss, confirming that the email was forwarded to Pete with a later email from Nicola confirming that Pete had signed the email which she would sent out in the post following receipt of his address. This hand signed email is included in the sale and comes within an envelope addressed to the vendor from Eel Pie Studios dated 21st December 2020, along with an Eel Pie Studios compliment slip signed by Nicola Joss. Copies of the emails between the vendor and Nicola are also available.

Records on The Who.net website in the section regarding Peter Townshend's Takamine guitars, a Takamine FP-360SC model is listed as 'used extensively on 1989 tour. Whereabouts unknown, but presumably still with Pete' . It is thought that this could possibly be that guitar. Many live photos show Pete using this particular model from 1989 through to the early 1990s, including a Takamine guitar artist endorsement advert from the early 1990s.

Pete’s current guitar technician Simon Law has confirmed that this guitars serial number falls within the same range as other guitars of the period that were given to Pete as part of his Takamine artist endorsement. These guitars were all used in some capacity by Pete with The Who and in solo work in the late 1980s - early 1990s. A statement from Simon is available with the sale.

The vendor has stated that although a wrench to see such a sentimental guitar go, he is now at a stage of his life that he feels it should be enjoyed by a Who fan rather than kept away in its case.

U2’s song, Vertigo, was launched in a television commercial for the iPod U2 Special Edition at the time of Apple’s October 2004 press conference. *Sold for charity to benefit Tom Toomey's Music for Africa. The Music For Africa mission is to bring music in to the every day lives of young people in South Africa. We aim to provide young people with life enhancing access to music, particularly those in marginalized and subsistence level communities who otherwise would have no such opportunities, as a result of the apartheid era. We’re doing so much more than teaching kids to play guitar. We’re also developing their pride and self esteem; we’re nurturing their determination and ambition as well as giving them a possible means of earning a living. 75% of our students who enter for music examinations with Trinity College of Music have achieved merits or distinctions and this is reflected in their school work. We encourage all our pupils to progress to Trinity College Music Exams and they achieve extraordinary results. Since 2004, 51 students have taken Grades 1-3. They’ve achieved one pass, 30 merits and an amazing 20 distinctions! In 2006 one pupil achieved a Trinity College ‘Highest Grade’ and Bronze Medal Award and in 2007 this was followed by two more pupils receiving the award. This is no easy feat as the Bronze Medal Award is one of the highest accolades achievable. More recently, three students have achieved music degrees at Kwazulu Natal University in Durban with outstanding results. Tom Toomey's vision has always been if he could help change the life of ONE person his job was done. This has happened a hundred fold thankfully. Music for Africa is essentially a very small (but mighty) charity that donates 100% of donations and all net profits direct to projects. It has no paid staff and is entirely reliant on voluntary support. In addition, any advertising costs incurred directly impact the amount we can spend on projects.
