NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
CONTENTS:
Hello! WoW! This year has gone by so quickly and I’m looking forward to a chilled festive season as we approach Christmas. I hear you LOL (Laugh Out Loud) at the word ‘chilled’; well, I suppose it’s what you make it to be really. Why not take time to get out and enjoy all the festivities that your community offers where you can meet new people with new ideas and even new humour! The Newtownabbey Museums and Galleries are holding various workshops (see page 8) and Christmas Fairs not forgetting the Christmas lights switch ons in various locations (pgs. 10&11; 14&15). With the festive mood in mind why not visit your local restaurants and enjoy what they have to offer such as the Templepatrick Hilton Hotel (pg.7), Logwood Coffee Shop and Restaurant (pg.25), Ellie Mays Restaurant (pg.29) and Belfast Castle Cellar Restaurant (pg.37). Also included are Christmas present ideas such as the golfing gift idea (pg.13), Hilton Hotel living well (pg.19) and many more. I always marvel at the community spirit that a lot of businesses still show even when business is challenging. Such an example is the Beauty and Beyond team who tirelessly raise money every year for the organisations that work with people affected by cancer (pg. 12); keep up the great work girls! Merry Christmas from all the In-touch Team!

The Royal National Institute of Blind People in Northern Ireland (RNIB NI) launched ‘A Sense of the Past’ exhibition and book at Museum at The Mill, Newtownabbey on 1 October. This interactive, accessible exhibition explores the social history of blindness in Northern Ireland from 1800, through wartime, right up to the present day. The exhibition consists of six display panels that provide insights into sport and leisure, welfare, education, employment, healthcare, conflict and how these affected the sight loss community in Northern Ireland over the past 200 years.
A lot has changed for blind and partially sighted people. Once objects of pity, we now assert our rights to self-determination and full inclusion in society.
Visitors who have sight loss can use a ‘Pen Friend’, an accessible media tool, to listen to a narrative of information contained on each of the six display panels and accompanying artifacts descriptions.
Until now, no comprehensive record of the experiences and heritage of blind and partially sighted people here existed. The book provides a further fascinating insight into the experiences of, and attitudes towards, blind people in the past, some of which are quite shocking to us today. Local blind or partially sighted people share their experiences, including those who attended Jordanstown School in the 1950 and 60s (then named the Ulster School for the Deaf and Blind), and those blinded during the Troubles.
6.
David Mann, Chair of RNIB NI and contributor to A Sense of the Past, said, “A lot has changed for blind and partially sighted people over the last two hundred years. Once objects of pity, we now assert our rights to selfdetermination and full inclusion in society. Changes in legislation and in technology over the past century have opened up ever wider horizons, but society still puts many unjustifiable barriers in our way. The historical perspective which this exhibition and book afford us should serve to strengthen the determination of RNIB and of blind and partially sighted individuals to continue the struggle for a more equal and inclusive society in which we can play a full role.” Through the ‘Museums in Focus’ project, staff at Museum at The Mill have now been trained in Visual Awareness to increase their understanding and guiding skills to ensure visitors with sight loss make the most of their visit to this exhibition, and the venue in the future. The exhibition is touring under the ‘Museums in Focus’ project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), and will run at Museum at The Mill until 2 January 2015. Copies of the Sense of the Past book are available from Museum at The Mill, or by contacting RNIB NI. The publication is also available in audio or Braille for people with sight loss. Good Morning Newtownabbey Above: The Good Morning Team (L-R) June McKee, Naomi Judson, Diane Irvine, Eddie Judson, Anne Judson
“
The Good Morning NI Network has a membership of 24 services throughout Northern Ireland of which the Good Morning Newtownabbey is one of the networks. This was established in January 2006 and we operate from Monkstown Community Centre in Newtownabbey. Our catchment area is the whole of Newtownabbey; however we do work closely with the neighbouring networks. The service users are referred to us by social workers, doctors, family and friends or through self-referrals.
Knowing that someone is looking out for you gives me great piece of mind; thank you Good Morning”.
We phone our service users five mornings a week for a chat and also to make sure that they are generally well enough. Our volunteers contact the users at a pre-arranged time so that the telephone call fits in with their daily routine. As part of the service, we also offer prescription collection, gardening services, emergency shopping, hospital visitations and medication reminders. On the social aspect, we keep the service users informed of any special events happening in the area that they might like to attend and information about other services and organisations in the area that may be of benefit to them. If there is an issue or problem that concerns them we are able to guide them on where to get help and advice. We also act as an alert service if a service user does not answer their telephone when we call. We then alert the nominated contact(s) such as a neighbour, friend or family member, who will then check on the person and advise us of their condition. Recently, with the help of PSNI we set up a protocol where if we are unable to get in-
16.
As part of the service we hold several networking events throughout the year so that service users can meet in a social environment in order to reduce isolation. We also provide 4 tier Home Security Packs which allow service users to feel more secure in their home. This security pack is aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime and specifically deals with crimes perpetrated against vulnerable members of our community. Throughout the year we also host presentations delivered by Newtownabbey Borough Council’s home safety officer. In conjunction with the PSNI, Victim Support Northern Ireland (VSNI), Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) and our volunteers we raise awareness of safety in the home for our users. A recent survey showed that many of our service users regard Good Morning as a life line. Here are a just a few of the comments they have made:“It’s great to hear a friendly voice in the morning; this sets me up for the day” “Knowing that someone is looking out for you gives me great piece of mind,’ thank you Good Morning” “I always had a fear of dying and not being found for days or weeks, now I know that if I don’t answer my call someone will come to check on me, this is very reassuring” We are truly grateful to our funders; Public Health Agency, Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and Newtownabbey Community Outreach without whom this project would not be such a success. If you would like to avail of this service or know of anyone who would benefit from it please come and visit us at Monkstown Community Association or contact us for more information. BUSINESS IN FOCUS
It seems clear that interest rates will be getting higher sooner rather than later. They have been at an historic low for so long that this will be a shock for us all. Some of us can remember interest rates of over 10% but others could have had a mortgage for 5 years and known only a bank rate of 0.5%. Financial Foresight have been providing independent financial and mortgage advice for over 30 years and our first meeting is always free. We have offices in Ballyclare and Belfast (amongst others) and are Northern Ireland based and owned.
Mortgage Payments To Go Up Above: 40 Main Street, Ballyclare has a new look
Mortgages...
In order to prepare for the interest rate rise we recommend you: • Contact your lender to find out what options you have (if any) • See your original mortgage adviser (if you had one) • Get a second opinion (time well spent) NB. If you find an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA), they can do it all for you. Be careful however, as many advisers are RESTRICTED as to what advice they can give and with whom they can place business. Financial Foresight, as truly Independent financial advisers will be happy to confirm if you have found a good mortgage deal. There may be no work in it for us to tell you to stay with your current lender or adviser but it earns us good will and as a result we may get to work with you when your current deal ends.

BUSINESS Customer satisfaction Good customer service is about managing the perceptions of your customers and giving them a positive experience of doing business with you. • Are your staff friendly and professional? • Are your products and services up to scratch? • Do you deliver what you promise? Getting this right is vital. To create satisfied customers, you need to establish a relationship with them based on understanding their needs. Then you need to exceed their expectations at every turn.
Is Customer Care At The Heart Of Your Business?
“
Customer care is at the heart of all successful businesses. It can help you develop a loyal customer base and improve relationships with your customers. In a competitive market, it can be tempting to chase new business. However, to boost revenue and profitability in your business, your best bet is to focus on customer retention and build up customer loyalty.
To turn a satisfied customer into an enthusiast for your business you need to offer great service based on a deep understanding of your customers’ needs.
20.
Loyal customers come back time and again and they will also promote your business through word-of-mouth recommendation. By building a long-term customer base, you can reduce the costs of looking for new customers and improve your bottom line. Good service helps turn customers into ambassadors for your business - they will buy your products and services regularly and give you valuable feedback on your performance as well as supporting you through good times and bad. To turn a satisfied customer into an enthusiast you need to offer great service based on a deep understanding of your customers’ needs. Price and product are important but it is service that gives you the edge over your competitors.
Every business makes promises to its customers, whether tacit or implied so you have to make sure you are delivering results. A good rule of thumb is to under-promise and over-deliver. Customer relationships Even the smallest business needs to plan and control its customer communications. Customer relationship management (CRM) is not the preserve of big corporations so to succeed, every business needs to take a customer-centric approach and build good relationships with their customers based on trust. You have to work at customer relationships. Never take your best customers for granted and keep communicating with them so you can respond as their needs change and reward them for their loyalty. Customers don’t usually complain; most just go elsewhere. Others not only complain, but demand action and possibly compensation. Unfortunately most businesses handle complaints badly so it is important to set up a customer complaints procedure and respond promptly. Resolve the issue so that you don’t make the same mistake twice and tell the customer how you have dealt with it. At the same time, don’t wait until someone complains. Encourage continuous feedback and be prepared to make improvements. Regular customer contact is vital and customer satisfaction surveys are a good way to find out how your business is seen by others. Regular surveys should elicit real responses, so ensure they can tell you in words as well as tick boxes. Loyalty schemes allow you to focus on your best customers. These customers buy more and are more profitable than those who may only respond to discounts. What’s more, highly satisfied customers are more receptive to cross-selling and up-selling.

Metallic Fashion For Winter Beverley Crawford (The Finery, Ballyclare)
“
There’s no denying it girls! We just love to talk fashion, even if only to convince ourselves that clothing is purely functional. Okay maybe we really aren’t influenced by what we see on a popular celebrity, but clothes can definitely affect how we feel about ourselves and how we react in different situations. It probably changes how others act around us, whether you like it or not? Have you ever dressed in a particular way and felt instantly more confident? Was there a time when a new dress made you feel like a princess? Sometimes simply wearing a bright colour on a dark winter day can be enough to instantly lift our mood.
Never feel intimidated by how others dress but instead learn how colours and styles can work for you.
22.
It isn’t necessary to be a slave to every look seen on the catwalk but the looks on the models can be modified and translated into an outfit that is wearable, to reflect your own style. The fun bit is taking some of the key trends and tweaking a little here and there. Each season at the Paris, London, Milan and New York shows, models on the catwalk parade the looks from top designers which will then filter through to the High Street, some of which you’ll love or loathe. The great thing is you can choose to adopt the full look, concentrating on working every single detail or just dabble a little, simply adding small accents to update your wardrobe. With so many looks coming through I’ve focused on fashion looks which are popular for this Winter and also likely to be really popular around Christmas. I am a big fan of the metallic trend seen this year and when it comes to party wear, gold, silver and bronze will always be popular choices. Sometimes even colours can be updated to bring about
a new look. Metallics are everywhere in the High Street but the colours are described as fluid and less solid, able to catch the light for a new exceptional shimmer. There is no shortage either of sequins and other embellishments for even more sparkle if desired. If you aren’t brave enough to tackle full-on metallic and not keen on the Christmas Fairy look, just add shine in the form of up-to the-minute accessories. The beauty of this look is the fact that it can be adapted to suit everyone and there isn’t an age limit... Take a look at the pleated skirt in metallic, big in Spring/Summer in pastels shades, but carried through to winter in new shimmery hues. It can be mini, maxi or midi and worn to the office or the Christmas party. It can be high gloss or slightly muted.. the choice is yours and the look you want to achieve is very much down to the other pieces in your wardrobe you choose to pair with your skirt. For a day’s shopping in the city, a practical and stylish choice could be the chunky sweater, worn with a pair of Converse or comfy ankle boots. If the weather calls for it, throw on your biker jacket in denim or leather and you are good to go. If you are more of a sophisticated lass, opt for a silk blouse, smart blazer and nude heels and if you want to tick another trend box this season, think pastel and add a pale pink or baby blue wool coat alongside silver or pewter for a contemporary look. Don’t be afraid of fashion, or too shy to experiment. Never feel intimidated by how others dress but instead learn how colours and styles can work for you and your lifestyle. What’s the worst that can happen if you try something and don’t like it? Have fun with metallic and have a shimmering Happy Christmas x

FAMILY LIFE through internet pages of some of the major players reveals snow glow dolls and .......... wait for it – digital dolls (at a very reasonable price of £60!) And how does the 2014 digital Miss differ from the 1959 creation of Barbie? Of course, Barbie had the perfect egg-timer figure, although experts worked out long ago that no living female could possibly be blessed – or cursed – with such proportions! The digital doll introduces technology. She syncs (ask your kids!!) to a smart device via Bluetooth, and, making full use of Google’s speech-to-text facility, will recognise and understand your child’s question, then search the internet, before pronouncing a suitable answer! And ‘SafeSearch’ technology ensures appropriate feedback is provided.......... Okay??!
Humbug, Anyone?
And boys won’t lose out in this hi-tech, smartsavvy world. How about a nice watch for Christmas? The sort you used to look forward to receiving, the sort that made you jump for joy at how grown up you were; the one with a face so bright and clear that you’d nearly have gone back to school on Boxing Day just to volunteer the correct time to anyone. Hmm. Think again. The latest 21st century offering comes complete with a touch screen, camera and games! And, it’s suitable for five year olds!! Honestly, where will it all end? Wait! Did someone say ‘Monopoly’?

“
We’ve only just got Halloween out of the way and thoughts now turn to ..... Christmas! Well, our thoughts turn to Christmas though the retail giants have had cards, selection boxes and other festive paraphernalia on their shelves since October. No, sorry, since September. No, sorry, since August! Why do they do this? Don’t they think we know when Christmas falls? Why do they think we need constant memory jogs from the summer, for goodness sake?
For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself.
In fairness, I was saying as much to a friend a few weeks back and, as she simply and correctly pointed out, a head-start is no bad thing. Wait until your Christmas pay – if you’re fortunate enough to be paid just before Christmas Eve – wait until then and you’ve only a few hours left in which to make the purchases and then a hefty six weeks until you’re paid again. As she put it, “Broke, all in the space of a few hours and then broke for a further month and a bit!” And those clever buyers at all the big stores already know what we’re going to be buying for little Johnny and cute Chloe. A quick scroll
26.
Ah good, about time, let’s get back to what Christmas afternoon following ‘The Queen’ is really all about. “Do not pass go”, “how much for Charing Cross?”, “I’d like another house please”. But what’s this? What’s happened to the new Monopoly 2014? It’s been ‘personalised’, has blank tiles, stickers for your properties and Chance and Community Chest cards take family photos.......... But you’ll need, yes, you’ll not be surprised, you’ll need a smart device to host the App and a printer - probably wifi enabled - to run the new features!! There are those who subscribe to the notion that we could do without the exchange of presents at Christmas. They may well say that we’ve lost sight of the true meaning of Christmas. And when you have a look at what’s in the shops, soon to take up residence beneath millions of Christmas trees across the country, you might find your head nodding in agreement. But consider the words of one Dickens character: “Bah,” said Scrooge, “humbug.” I’ll leave you with a further quote from A Christmas Carol: “For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself.” Happy Christmas!

FAMILY LIFE So whether you’re tempted by a Norway Spruce or a Nordmann Fir (whatever that is) you’re a dedicated follower of fashion. Make sure it’s not too tall to, a) get through the front door and b) fit under the ceiling of the living room! It also needs to be examined from 360 degrees to make sure it isn’t too bushy on one side, nor have an unexplained large gap at the back! And of course it has to be stood in a bucket of water – not soil, not sand, - stood in tap water and refilled each day as your average Christmas tree is capable of ‘drinking’ up to two or three pints daily! (A bit like some folk at Christmas, I suppose!) Oh, and don’t forget that while the corner of the room may be the best/handiest/least obstructive/largest place to stand it..........it must NOT be near any heat otherwise all your previous efforts will have been in vain!
Does Christmas Give You The Needle?
“
If you want to apportion blame, then look no further than the Royal family. If you don’t consider the word ‘blame’ to be correct, then it’s still the Royals! Either way, thanks to Queen Victoria back in 1846, (she agreed to an appearance in the Illustrated London News), we now have an annual routine that I’m sure many people, even the most gentle and selfless, would much prefer not to have. If the front room radiator
was on - the tree dried up, if it was off - the TV audience foundered!
28.
You see Victoria was a popular queen, her subjects loved her, and what she did, others copied – almost immediately. So a festive portrait of a smiling family around a tree would become instantly admired and trend-settingly copied. The English Christmas had been born! Or should I say, the idea of an English Christmas with a Christmas tree had been born!
So when are you going out to pick a tree? I have to be honest and say that we gave up years ago. Needles fell off constantly, irrespective of how much water it got. Water got sloshed round the floor as more and more was transported to the thirsty monster. If the front room radiator was on - the tree dried up, if it was off - the TV audience foundered! And visiting nephews and nieces invariably pulled off what remaining decorations the cat hadn’t scratched to pieces! We couldn’t wait to get it out through the front window and round to the recycling site. Through the front window? Yes, so many needles had cascaded to the floor around the tree, that any attempt to remove it through the doorways by which it had come in to the house, meant an avalanche of sharp brown needles strewn along the carpet and into every crevice between the back of the living room and the front door! Disaster. And the artificial colour-coded one we bought from our local store has served us very well in the years since. No water, no needles, the nephews and nieces have grown up, the cat has mellowed with age. Except that with our failing eyesight, we can’t necessarily make out the correct colours at the branch ends! To the rescue, the pop up. An insult to real tree lovers, but a godsend to the rest of us. It just pulls up into position, comes pre-decorated with festive lights, and never requires even a sip of water! Bliss. Until this Christmas. End of November actually. “What about a real tree next year?” the ‘boss’ suggested, “we used to get a real tree.....” Honestly, there’s just no pleasing some people! Have a great Christmas, whichever kind of tree you opt for! By Luke North
HEALTHY LIVING
Keeping On The Fitness Track
“
As winter sets in and the festive season gets a little hectic, we sometimes end up having little or no time to focus on our health and fitness. Do you know how much weight you gain over the winter season? Now there is a question for us to think and ponder on. But did you know that in as little as 20 minutes a day you can reduce stress, increase your energy level and also boost your metabolism. So here are some winter fitness tips that will keep you on track;
1. Short and Sweet Don’t let go of your workout plan, but rather go for a time efficient option. A good 20 minutes work out will keep you on a positive roll over the winter so that when spring arrives your body will be on a continuum Remember your body spectrum for fitness.
functions just the same way during winter and still needs similar amounts of water for sweating, breathing and going to the toilet.
30.
2. Social activities Plan or suggest fun fitness activities with your family and friends such as a walk in the park or going for a fitness class such as dance or yoga. This can shift your focus away from food and nibbling to a more fun evening with a difference. 3. Yoga and Pilates The winter season can be a tough time to exercise outdoors especially if you suffer from arthritis. However, neglecting exercise will only make your mobility worse. So if the weather is unsuitable for walking, why not borrow a yoga or pilates DVDs from your local library or purchase one and try it at home. This will help to increase strength and flexibility as well as reducing pain in your joints and will also help combat fatigue. However, always seek medical advice if you are concerned about exercising.
4. Feed your brain too! Do you sometimes work so hard that you feel as if your brain is on fire? Nutritionist’s emphasise that eating is not just for satisfying our hunger, but we should also feed our brain to replace the nutrients that have been used up during a hard day’s work. Our brain produces oxidants when we are working therefore refueling our bodies with antioxidants can be of benefit. So why not try foods such as leafy green vegetables, berries, beans and whole grains. Fresh berries are not easily found during winter but are available in the frozen section of your local supermarket. 5. Fuel your body Sounds pretty obvious but yet this is the first thing we stop doing during winter. Remember your body functions just the same way during winter as the rest of the year and still needs similar amounts of water for sweating, breathing and going to the toilet. Drinking water also removes toxins from our body and helps keep our skin hydrated. Substitute at least two cups of tea or coffee a day with a cup of warm water and still keep warm. If you don’t like the taste of water, a glass of milk, vegetable juice or sugar free sports drinks can also work as substitutes. 6. Bulks of veg Why not try bulks of winter vegetables for your dinner. Vegetable based soups are also a tasty warm evening meal and are rich in vitamins. Barley and lentils are also good in soups and will keep you fuller for a longer period. One final piece of advice for Christmas is Never go to a party hungry! Try to eat a piece of fruit or salad before you leave home as this will curb your desire to nibble your way through the whole evening! By Newtownabbey In-touch

this applies particularly to children as they make their way to and from school. It is especially important that all pedestrians take precautions and wear high visibility clothing when out and about in the dark.
Helping Children Be ‘Seen’ On Our Roads
“
AS PART of a road safety campaign by the Abbeycentre Specsavers store, this winter, Tony McGinn and the entire team at the store are doing something to help young people be seen more clearly on our roads and alert them to the importance of being safe when out and about. Whilst Tony and his team are always readily available to provide advice and information, and a first class eyecare service, they felt they wanted to give something back to the local community, especially to the young primary school children in the area.
As the nights draw in during the winter, we understand the importance of being seen on our roads, especially for school children.
Therefore, between now and the end of January 2015, or until stocks run out, the well-known and well-respected Abbeycentre Specsavers store is giving away a whopping 500 high visibility vests to the first 500 primary school children who call in store over the coming months and receive a new pair of kids Specsavers frames. As the nights draw in during the winter, the Newtownabbey Specsavers store understands the importance of being seen on our roads, especially for school children. The Abbey Centre store has already been donating high visibility vests to local primary schools in the Newtownabbey area but this in-store initiative is a way of ensuring that young children don’t miss out and can obtain a jacket of their own. Abbeycentre store director and Specsavers regional chairman for Northern Ireland, Tony McGinn, says: ‘To be safe as a road user and as a pedestrian you have to be seen, and
34.
‘With the return of the darker mornings and evenings this winter, children’s safety on the roads becomes one of the community’s highest concerns. As part of our road safety campaign, and ahead of Road Safety Week (17th – 23rd November), we wanted to reinforce the importance of being seen on our roads at all times. Therefore, we are delighted to be able to donate such a high number of vests to those primary school children within our local community. We will be giving 500 high visibility jackets away until stocks run out – to any child who receives a pair of Specsavers frames – so be sure to call in store over the coming weeks and months.’ The staff at the Abbeycentre Specsavers store would also like to remind the local community that it isn’t just about being seen on our roads, but it is also about the importance of being able to see other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and any other road users. Especially important to note is that all glasses in the Specsavers kids £64 and teens £85 ranges are currently free with an under16s NHS voucher. And now, Specsavers will give you a second pair from the £64 or £85 range, FREE. Both pairs of FREE kids glasses can come with SuperTough Trivex® single vision lenses with a scratch-resistant treatment. Or you can choose to have tinted prescription lenses and UV filter free in your second pair. There is a large selection of trendy frames that children will love, including Moshi Monsters, Star Wars, Disney Princess, Lego and The Simpsons, to name a few. So why not call in store, collect a free high visibility vest for your child, stocks are set to run out fast! If you are worried about your vision, or that of a child or relative’s, call into Specsavers, Newtownabbey for eyecare advice from Tony or one of the professionally-trained staff, who are available seven days a week. Alternatively you can call the store on 02890 369 569 to book an appointment. Specsavers, Newtownabbey, is celebrating ten years of providing an eye care service to the local community.

HOME 1. A typical loft needs clearing out first. If the loft has been previously insulated with glass fibre you should get kitted out in hooded overalls, gloves and a dust mask before entering. Perching on ceiling joists is a perilous business, so it’s a good idea to take a long board that you can span across several joists. Find something that’s wide enough to kneel on comfortably and kit yourself out with kneepads.
Insulating Your Loft
“
Topping up your existing loft insulation to the recommended 270mm can help your home to retain heat during the cold winter months. Between 15 and 25 percent of the heat lost from our homes is lost through the roof. Loft insulation helps to trap that rising hot air — and, by topping up existing insulation to the recommended 270mm, the average household saving on annual heating bills can be more than £150.
Sheep’s wool is a great natural insulator and can be installed more quickly than the synthetic varieties. It is however a more expensive option.
You’ll also be helping to save the planet by reducing your home’s carbon footprint to the tune of one tonne of CO2 a year.
If 270mm of insulation sounds like a lot, you’re right — its longer than the length of this page you’re currently reading. By the time you’ve put 100mm of insulation down, it will be level with the top of many ceiling joists. To get the extra depth of insulation you need, employ a cross-laying technique. Thickness is one thing, quality of material is another. Synthetic materials such as glass fibre and mineral wool, and natural sheep’s wool are popular choices for insulating.
42.
Storage Space Fitted with the full 270mm of insulation, your loft may be no good for storage. However, you can still improve insulation and create a safe place for storage by using a product like Space Board. This 52.5mm-thick board goes on top of the ceiling joists (that you’ve already filled with 100mm or more of insulation material). Chipboard loft boards go on top and are screwed down through the Space Board to create an insulated storage platform.
2. Once within the loft, measure the depth of insulation you already have. Calculate how much insulation material you require by measuring the width and the length of the area you want to insulate in metres. Multiply the width by the length to calculate the area in square metres. The area covered is shown on the pack. 3. Take the material into the loft area and unpack it a roll at a time. Slide one end into the eaves. Leave at least a 25mm gap at the eaves end to allow for a free flow of air in the loft space. If you’re using the enclosed, metallised type of mineral wool, don’t forget to lay the silver side upwards. 4. Lightly press the insulation down between the ceiling joists and continue across the loft. When you reach the eaves on the opposite side, cut the insulation 25mm short as before. Carry on fitting the insulation this way across the rest of the loft but avoid insulating under the water tank (if fitted), as warm air will rise from the room below and help to stop the tank freezing in the winter. Electrical wires should be laid on top of the insulation to stop them overheating. Any light fittings that come through the ceiling should have the absolute minimum of a 75mm insulation-free zone all around them. 5. If you’ve been using 100mm-thick insulation, it’s likely to be level with the top of the joists after the first pass. If it’s not, you can double the insulation over on itself and do a return trip across the loft. But to build up to the ideal 270mm thickness or beyond, you’ll need to cross-lay the insulation. To do this properly, lay the insulation at right angles to the joists. 6. Nearly finished, but don’t forget the loft hatch. Cut a section of insulating material and glue it to the hatch. Replace the hatch and get ready for lower energy bills. Glass fibre wool on the roll is cheap and readily available from DIY stockists and very effective. On the downside, if it comes into contact with your skin you’ll be itching for days afterwards — always wear hooded overalls, a dust mask and gloves. Mineral wool is slightly more expensive, but far more fire-resistant than glass fibre wool and offers the same insulation benefits and increasingly it is being sold on the roll, enclosed in a heat-reflecting metallised polythene film. RECIPE
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas 6. Grease
and line a 33 x 23cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment, securing the corner with metal paperclips.
2. For the sponge, place the eggs and sugar
together in a large bowl. Using an electric hand whisk, beat the mixture until it is pale, light and frothy.
3. Sieve the flour and cocoa powder into the
bowl and carefully fold in to the egg mixture, using a metal spoon and taking care not to beat any of the air out of the mixture.
4. Pour in to the lined tin and spread out into the corners. Bake in the middle of the oven for about 8-10 minutes until pale golden and the sides are shrinking away from the edge of the tin.
5. Place a piece of baking parchment bigger
than the Swiss roll on the work surface. Invert the cake on to the paper and remove (and count!) the paperclips and peel away the baking parchment.
6. Trim the edges of the cake with a sharp

Ingredients • • • •
(Serves 10 - 12)
4 large eggs 100 g caster sugar 65 g self-raising flour 40 g cocoa powder
For the chocolate icing and topping: • 275 g dark chocolate, broken into small pieces • 450 ml double cream • 4 tbsp apricot jam • icing sugar, for dusting • holly and red berries, to garnish
7. While the cake is cooling, make the icing. Melt the chocolate and 300ml of the cream in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Refrigerate until cool and thickened. Whip the remaining cream. 8. Uncurl the cold Swiss roll and remove
the paper. Spread a third of the icing over the surface then spread the whipped cream on top, and re-roll tightly. Cut a quarter of the cake off from one end, on the diagonal. Transfer the large piece of cake to a serving plate and angle the cut end to the side of the large cake to make a branch. Cover the surface of the cake with the melted apricot jam.
9. Put the remaining chocolate icing into a
piping bag fitted with a star nozzle. Pipe long thick lines along the cake, covering the cake completely so it looks like the bark of a tree. Cover each end with icing or, if you wish to see the cream, leave un-iced.
10. Dust with icing sugar and garnish with fresh holly and red berries.5. Return to
the freezer and freeze for an hour or until firm. The snowballs can be then served in petit four cases, or dipped in melted white chocolate and returned to the freezer for another hour first. Serve straight from freezer. By: Mary Berry From: Good Food Live

by Cathy Kelly At the top of the Eiffel Tower, a young man proposes to his girlfriend, cheered on by delighted tourists. In that second, everything changes, not just for the happy couple, but for the family and friends awaiting their return in Bridgeport, Ireland.
Do you want to play a par round as described by John Richardson in his bestselling book Dream On? Since John completed his Dream On challenge he has delved deeply into how golfers can really improve their game. From reading countless books to meeting some of the best coaches and players in the world, John and the golfers in his community have gathered the very best tips and then
On the success of his book he said, “I was just putting something together to help non tech folks sort out their own laptops etc. It’s no tome by any means, but it does exactly what it’s meant to do, helps you identify the issues you’re likely to have, how to fix and prevent re-occurrence. I certainly never expected it to be a best seller, but I do now have other titles planned” Leila’s been nursing a badly broken heart since her love-rat husband just upped and left her one morning, but she’s determined to put on a brave face for the bride. Vonnie, a widow and exceptional cake-maker, is just daring to let love back into her life, tho someone seems determined to stop it. And Grace, a divorced head teacher, finds the impending wedding of her son means that she’s spending more time with her ex-husband. After all those years apart, is it possible she’s made a mistake? Safe On The Road This Winter
“
When it’s cold outside, preparing your car properly for the winter months could save you from an inconvenient breakdown or even a potentially dangerous situation.
4. Inspect your tyres If you don’t want your car to slip and skid on the road, the most important thing is to check your tyres.
Check out this checklist for ensuring your vehicle is ready for winter:
Driving in the ice and snow safely requires quality tyres with a good deep tread. Inspect them for worn patches or other damage and if they seem tired, replace them. If you live in a rural or isolated area, get snow tyres fitted.
1. Basic checks Before winter really sets in, it pays to give your car a good once over at your local garage. Ask to have the heating system, antifreeze and windows checked. Additionally, it takes more battery power to start your vehicle in the cold weather, so get your mechanic to check for sufficient Driving in the ice and snow voltage and tighten the battery cable safely requires quality tyres connections.
with a good deep tread. Inspect them for worn patches or other damage and if they seem tired, replace them.
2. Protect your bodywork One word. Wax.
Take your car to the car wash for a deep clean and treat it to a good thick coat of wax. It can make a real difference in ensuring your car makes it through the extra road grit and salt without a scratch to the paintwork. 3. Ensure a snow-free exterior If your car is covered in snow, always clear it off completely before travelling anywhere. It may take a little extra time, but it will ultimately ensure a much safer journey.
58.
4. Check your lights Visibility is often poor during the winter months, so it’s important that your lights are clean and work properly. Don’t forget to check your hazard lights are functioning correctly. This could be vital in the event of an accident.
5. Test your wipers Windshield wiper fluid freezes easily during winter. Get your mechanic to recommend a winter-proofed brand. You should also check that the spray system is working properly. 6. Pack a winter survival kit While you are winter-proofing your car, don’t forget to stock it up with a few survival essentials should you encounter any problems. Ensure you are always equipped with: • • • • • • • • • •
a spade/shovel; anti-freeze spray; a scraper; warm, waterproof clothing; a first aid kit; a powerful torch; non-perishable protein-rich snacks; a supply of water; a fully-charged mobile phone; and a spare charger.
7. Fill up with fuel Try and ensure that your fuel tank is always half full or more. This has the effect of reducing the likelihood of condensation build-up, which means your car will be easier to start on frosty mornings. If you do breakdown, stay with the car and put your hazards on to let people know you are there. Courtesy of www.yourcarsite.co.uk

MOTORING damage to you and other people. That’s why you have a particular responsibility to do everything you can to be safe and protect the people around you. Yet sometimes it can feel like roads are angry places where different road users are in different tribes and competing for space and priority. A simple lack of consideration and care can have awful consequences. It can mean people feel less able to get out and about and less likely to choose walking and cycling: kids not being allowed to walk to school, commuters not feeling able to cycle, families being more inclined to always use the car. It can also lead to tragedy: people suffering horrific injuries or even being killed because of someone going too fast, too close or not looking out. Road crashes are not accidents; they are devastating and preventable events, not chance mishaps. Calling them accidents undermines work to make roads safer, and can cause insult to families whose lives have been torn apart by needless casualties. The good news is there are some really simple steps you can take to hugely reduce your chances of being in a serious crash. For this year’s Road Safety Week (17-23 November 2014), we’re asking everyone to look out for each other on roads, because being selfish can easily lead to a tragedy.
“
Road Safety Week is the UK’s flagship road safety event, coordinated annually by the charity Brake. It aims to raise awareness about the devastation of road crashes and casualties, and the part we can all play in making our roads and communities safer.
Brake are particularly calling on drivers to protect people on foot and bike by slowing down to Road crashes are not 20 in communities, looking longer and accidents; they are taking it slow at devastating and preventable junctions and bends, and giving people events, not chance mishaps. plenty of room. They are also calling on everyone to put safety first and be considerate to one another, encouraging people on foot and bike not to take chances, and make sure they can be seen. We all use roads to get around and most of us use them in different ways: often a mix of walking, catching the bus or driving, and maybe cycling, running or skating too. Of course, however we use roads, we are all people underneath just trying to get about, but some road users are especially vulnerable and need protecting by those of us in charge of vehicles. 60.
Follow Brake’s advice on each key topic below, and you’ll be helping to prevent devastating crashes, making our streets and communities safer, happier places, and doing your bit for the environment. Slow - Stay under limits, and slow down to 20mph around schools, homes and shops to protect others. I’ll slow right down for bends, brows and bad weather, and avoid overtaking. Sober - Never drive after drinking any alcohol or taking drugs – not a drop, not a drag. Secure - Make sure everyone in your vehicle is belted up on every journey, and kids smaller than 150cm are in a proper child restraint. Silent - Never take or make calls or texts when driving. Turn off your phone or put it out of sight and on silent, and stay focused on the road. Sharp - Get your eyes tested every two years and wear glasses or lenses at the wheel if you need them. Take regular breaks and never drive when tired, stressed or on medication that affects driving. Sustainable - Minimise the amount you drive, or not drive at all. Try getting about by walking, cycling or public transport as much as you can, for road safety, the environment and your health.
