A focus on vision:

GARLAND IS AN ACTIVE, HEALTHY, FUN, AND INVITING CITY.

Garland staff developed the department’s vision statement to reflect the direction and long term goals they wanted to achieve to help Grow Garland for future generations. By making Garland more active, healthy, fun and inviting, staff provide a huge investment into Garland that achieves the following:

t t

Develop stronger neighborhoods

t

Assist older adults to develop social networks and achieve a stronger sense of purpose and improve wellness

t

Bring families closer together to build stronger communities and reduce crime

t

Conserve natural areas to benefit the environment for future generations

t

Make Garland more livable to enhance the City’s economic development

Help children grow socially, physically and mentally to be more productive members of society

Active/Healthy

In this and future issues of PLAY, we will focus on the components of our department’s vision statement. This issue will focus on making Garland more active and healthy. Research shows that our nation’s level of health

is declining, which is causing downward shifts in overall quality of life. Our staff are reversing this trend in Garland by providing events, programs, facilities, open spaces and activities that encourage residents to be more active. Regular activity improves health, increases energy and provides an enhanced sense of well-being. Who doesn’t want that? Below are staff picks for fall 2016 active programs and activities that will help you be more healthy.

garland is not around with its

designation

Garland is making play a priority.

With its brand new designation as a 2016 Playful City USA, Garland is taking bold steps to create more play opportunities for all kids. Why is play so important? Play can help manage toxic stress, an epidemic among children in low-income families. Play can spark creativity and resilience - two of the most important leadership and job skills of the 21st

century. Play also enriches all other aspects of learning from the STEM disciplines to critical thinking and analysis. Cities, engaged citizens and leaders working together have the power to turn all spaces into transformative theaters of activity, inspiration, and discovery—and in the process, to change minds and habits. The KaBOOM! Playful City USA program has inspired infrastructure investments, programs

Feature

and policy changes among cities across the country. Garland is one of 257 cities in 2016 that are at the vanguard of the national playability movement. “We are thrilled to recognize cities that invest in putting kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “Balanced and active play is crucial to ensuring kids— and the places they live— thrive. By integrating play into cities, the leaders of our Playful City USA communities recognize that kids and families want to live in close proximity to safe places to play.”

17

Since 1996, KaBOOM! has collaborated with partners to build, open or improve nearly 16,300 playgrounds, engaged more than one million volunteers and served 8.1 million kids. KaBOOM! creates great places to play, inspires communities to promote and support play, and works to drive the national discussion about the importance of play in fostering healthy and productive lives. Garland is #75 of the Best Cities for Recreation in the nation! Neighborhood parks are instrumental to build community cohesion, boost property values, improve public health, enhance the beauty of a community and reduce pollution when planned and managed carefully. But the term “parks and recreation” encompasses far more than just facilities and exercise. Recreation includes a wide range of leisure-time activities with varying levels of physical exertion required.

TOP 100

WalletHub’s Best Cities for Recreation

With that in mind, WalletHub compared the 100 largest U.S. cities across 35 key metrics that speak to the relative benefits of public spaces and recreational activities across the country. Basic living costs, the quality of parks, the accessibility of entertainment and recreational facilities as well as the climate were investigated in each city. Some of the metrics relating to Garland Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts included: Number of Music Venues per 100,000 Residents

Number of Hiking Trails per 100,000 Residents

Number of Tennis Courts per 100,000 Residents

Spending on Parks per Capita

Number of Public Swimming Pools per 100,000 Resident

Percentage of the Population with Walkable Park Access

Number of Ball Diamonds per 100,000 Residents

Park Playgrounds per 100,000 Residents

Number of Basketball Hoops per 100,000 Residents

Acres of Parkland per 1,000 Residents

Garland was ranked #75 out of the top 100 cities above 100,000 population in the United States. Only 13 Texas cities made the list and Garland was #7. The only D/FW city ranked higher than Garland was Plano. Garland’s ranking is a huge acknowledgement of the quality and value of the city’s public parks, recreation facilities, and activities which provide a great quality of life to Garland citizens.

Did You Know... Garland has a Pullman Coach Car?

Donated to the City of Garland in 1976 by the Santa Fe Railroad, this 1910 Pullman Coach Car #582 transported passengers on the main line steam trains of the Santa Fe railroad system from 1910 to about 1930, playing a vital role in troop transportation during World War I. From 1930 to 1949, it connected small towns in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, linking Santa Fe’s branch lines like Garland’s to their main line. Finally, in 1949, it was taken out of service and became living quarters for a Santa Fe employee, saving it from the demolition many similar railroad cars faced. This 1910 Pullman Coach Car represents a unique transitional design, combining a newer metal undercarriage with a wooden framed car. In 2014, it underwent an exterior refurbishment, returning its paint color and markings to their original 1910 specifications. Few of these cars are believed to exist today. The Pullman Coach Car #582 now stands as an important reminder of the important role the railroads played in the development of the City of Garland. Today you can visit and view the exterior of the rail car at Heritage Crossing. Make plans to stop in at the Landmark Museum. The Landmark Museum, which has resided in Garland’s former Santa Fe depot since 1974, displays local artifacts from early settlers, old newspapers, farm tools, quilts, clothing and more. The museum is located at 393 N. Sixth Street and is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information visit GarlandHeritage.com and flip to page 33!
