ith so many television shows dealing with the monetary value and the newsworthy, lottery-like “finds” in the world of art and antiques, it was refreshing to spend our summer at Garth’s receiving and reviewing stories focusing on the history, emotion and intrinsic value of objects. Sure, the hunt for special (read valuable) objects appeals on many levels (it is our business after all), but Garth’s, in partnership with several leaders in the art and antiques trade, hoped to simply inspire and promote reading, research, and love of the objects to a broader audience this summer. The inaugural, national “Biography of an Object” writing contest (June 15 through August 15) seems to have done just that! Signing on to promote and support, as well as provide judges for the contest, were three of the top trade newspapers: Antiques & the Arts Weekly, AntiqueWeek, and Maine Antique Digest, as well as the popular online database Prices4Antiques.com. An especially effective notification was also sent out to libraries across the country which put the contest on the radars of teachers and librarians who touch the lives of future collectors. Contestants were asked to create a brief fictional biography (prose or poetry) or a more studied, nonfictional account about an item of their choice, addressing similar questions to those one would ask if writing a biography of a person: Where are you from? What was your life like? What was your purpose?. Winners in all three age groups were announced on September 1 and we encourage you to check out the winning submissions at our website, garths.com/contest. Maybe, just maybe, you will be inspired to enter or encourage someone to enter next summer! Happy Fall! We hope to hear from you soon, Amelia & Jeff Jeffers

For most antique objects, we'll never know their complete history; but, for this gold thimble, a lovely life across three generations can now be shared with the world. The first place winner in the adult division of our writing contest used the essay to compose a short genealogical history of her family. Lynda from California has much to celebrate on her 80th birthday this year! Way to go, Lynda!
