UNDERGROUND ROME THE HIDDEN CITY IS F INALLY R EVEALED

When representing Rome, we often use images like the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain or the Spanish Steps. While being very famous and spectacular these places cannot represent the entire cultural and artistic heritage of Rome for the last 2.700 years. Over the centuries, earthquakes, fires and floods caused the ground level of the many areas to rise (up to 25 meters) which resulted in entire villas, temples and palaces being buried. Many of these sites, now lying under the street level, have been excavated offering a look into Rome’s immense underground heritage. The people of Rome built not only incredible ground level buildings, but also some amazing underground sites. These hidden and mysterious parts of the city are what Gartour wants to reveal with its “New Underground exclusive Rome tours”. Our unusual and fascinating itineraries led by an archaeologist, classical historical medievalist or a certified speleologist for the city of Rome, include many places that are usually impossible for the regular tourist to explore. However, now Gartour will allow its clients access to these wonderful “secret” sites. Thanks to these unique and exclusive itineraries you will be sure to gain a deeper insight and knowledge of ancient Rome.

The Pantheon is a building commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus as a temple to all the gods of ancient Rome, and rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian about 126 A.D. The building is circular with a portico of large granite Corinthian columns under a pediment. A rectangular vestibule links the porch to the rotunda which is under a coffered concrete dome with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. The Pantheon is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome and one of the best-preserved of all Roman buildings. From here you will walk to Piazza di Pietra where you will admire the Adrian Temple. Proceed to the Church of S. Maria in via Lata where you will enter the underground area. It is claimed that St. Paul spent two years here, in the crypt under the Church, whilst under house arrest waiting for his trial. The first Christian place of worship here was a 5th century oratory (chapel with welfare centre) in the Roman building beneath the present Church. This was constructed within the remains of a large Roman warehouse, some 250 meters long. You will also discover an ancient Roman well that is a clear sign of the presence of pristine waters that, according to the legend, appeared thanks the prayers of St. Paul while he was imprisoned here. Your guide will show some very well preserved and rare frescoes.

On entering the piazza, one is immediately taken aback by such elegance: the yellow, brownish ochre-coloured buildings, Bernini’s fountain and the celebrated Spanish Steps rising up towards the Church of Trinità dei Monti all helping to create a refined, 18th century atmosphere. The monumental stairway of 135 steps was designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi. In the Spanish Steps at the base is the Early Baroque fountain called Fontana della Barcaccia, built in 1627-29 and often credited to Pietro Bernini, father of the famous Gian Lorenzo (recently it’s been stated that he collaborated on the decoration). From here you will walk to the Trevi Fountain, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci. Standing 26,3 metres (86 ft) high and 49,15 metres (161,3 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city. The fountain at the junction of three roads marks the terminal point of the “modern” Acqua Vergine, the revived Aqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. In 19 b.C., supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 13 Km (8,1 mi) from the city (this scene is presented on the present fountain’s façade). However, the eventual indirect route of the aqueduct made its length some 22 km (14 mi). This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa. It served Rome for more than 400 years. From here, you will walk to the Vicus Caprarius, an ancient alley where the entrance of an underground passage is located. You will now discover what lies beneath the magnificent fountain. Here you will admire a huge complex of ancient ruins hidden beneath the Trevi Fountain, dating to the imperial age. The area is situated 8 meters underground, in a suggestive atmosphere are visible different levels of an ancient district on the Caprarius Road (Vicus Caprarius). The archaeological site preserves the look of the activity in the center of Rome from I till V century A.D. In the enchanting ruins it’s possible to see water cistern, labyrinth, staircases, passages, Domus from IV century A.D. and many archaeological find like amphora, coins, and votive statues. In the Vicus Caprarius the same water of Trevi Fountain gushes out.... The Vicus Caprarius is an exceptional testimony of one of the most important periods in the history of Rome. 2

The Tiber Island is one of the two islands on the Tiber River; the other, much larger one is called Isola Sacra. The Island is boat-shaped, approx. 270 meters long and 67 meters wide. Being a seat of the ancient temple of Asclepius and later a hospital, the Island is associated with medicine and healing. The Island has been linked to the rest of Rome by two bridges since antiquity: the Ponte Fabricio, the only original bridge in Rome and the Ponte Cestio of which only some original parts survive. In ancient times, before Christianity spread through Rome, Tiber Island was avoided because of the negative stories associated with it. Only the worst criminals and the contagiously ill were condemned there. This however changed when a temple was built on the island. From the Island you will reach an ancient church that hides the remains of three very ancient temples. It was once thought that these cells could have been the prison of St. Peter. Then however the truth was discovered. A fascinating way to discover ancient Rome underneath the cobblestones of the Baroque Rome, is an underground tour filled with mysterious of places unknown by the “normal tourists”. The Church of St. Nicholas in Prison is in fact absolutely unique in the world. Even at a distance we realize that there are six imposing columns of an ancient Roman temple built into the side walls of the Church. The Church is indeed entirely constructed on three temples of 3rd and 2nd centuries b.C. What sets apart these ruins to any other ruins in Rome is that they are Republican-era temples, not imperial and therefore probably the most ancient ruins existing in Rome. From the crypt under the altar you will descend to the underground level and arrive in the spaces - at the time open to the sky - between the three temples. You are on the beaten path of the Romans who for centuries passed this way on their daily comings and goings to the vegetable and cattle market a few steps away. The foundations and the massive load - bearing structures of the temples survived the collapse and devastation of the centuries, wars and destruction. During the reconstruction, around the 9th century A.D, it seemed a good idea to reuse the strong arms of the temples to anchor a Church. On the inside of the Church, among the many historical details, one of the columns preserves an interesting engraving from the 8th century A.D. while the bell in the medieval tower is still the original one from the end of the 13th century A.D.

Navona Square sits over the area of the Stadium, which was built by Domitian before 86 AD, for athletics competitions of Greek origin (running, wrestling, boxing), the agones, very appreciated by Domitian, but not much by Roman people, who liked violent and bloody performances. Some scholars believe it was the most elegant place for shows of the ancient world. The stadium measured 275 meters long by 106 wide. Chariot races, similar to those at Circus Maximus, were held utilizing its oval design. The difference between Stadium and Circus is that the track of a Circus, to allow chariot races, was divided in two by a "spina" a central up level path decorated with obelisks, and needed at least 500m in length (like the Circus Maximus); the Stadium, in contrast, was a large arena without any division (Navona Square). The square was sometimes flooded in the summer and used for aquatic games and staged naval battles. In the 15th century, over the ruins of the then decrepit stadium, it was paved over to create Navona Square. The stadium remained in operation until the fifth century. With our tour, you will learn how after the renovation of a building located at number 62, the ancient stadium was discovered. During the works an ambulatory of the Stadium was found: underground rooms of 350 square meters whose spaces were reused at the beginning of the dark ages. Two main entrances are located in the middle of the long sides. The one used for our tour is in the middle of the curved side, with a colonnade of portasanta marble in front of it. This area, discovered in the years 1936-1938 and visited only with special permission, is the best preserved part of the stadium, and it is now part of the tour leaded by our private licensed archaeologist guide. The cavea of the stadium included two lines of steps superimposed: according to a calculation made on the basis of the length of the lines of steps, the seats for the spectators are 30.000. Archaeologists have found 3,500 fragments of marbles of “pavonazzetto”, African "antique yellow" or greek “cipollino” taken from imperial monuments. Explore the Eternal City from a completely different point of view: you will discover a new Rome, as you’ve never expected.

Upon arrival in Naples a panoramic tour of the historical centre: Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, Piazza del Municipio, the Gallery of Umberto I, the San Carlo Opera house. Continue to Pompeii. After lunch, visit the excavations of this ancient Roman city that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This archaeological journey will give you the opportunity to better understand a way of life typical of the Roman society at that time. It’s possible to see the intact remains of people, domestic animals, food that show some evidence of the final agony and the panic felt by the people in those last few minutes before the city was so disastrously buried. At the end of the visit we will return to the coach for a journey back to Rome. During this excursion we will visit a coral and cameo factory to admire and purchase items of this ancient craft.
